Regarding offer of info on "index of H for Marriages and Death records from Sampson Co." I am interested in any information on the following: Owen Fennel Herring, b-15 Mar 1843, d-28 Jun 1922, m-abt 1867 to Bettie Jane Hargrove, b-20 Jan 1851, d-21 Feb 1919 (in Clinton, NC). I'm particularly interested in determining the parents of Bettie Jane Hargrove but any information would be appreciated. Thanks, Barry -- Barry Collier E-mail: bcollier@neo.rr.com Phone: (330) 867-5896
Donna, I'll be visiting NC later this year. Would you be so kind as to give me the address of the courthouse for Sampson County. I'm researching family from there but unfortunately not H. My family is Wiggins and I would like to check death and marriage records there. I live in Odessa, Texas. Thanks in advance. Pauline Wiggins Herron
I have copied the index of H for Marriages and Death records from the Sampson Co. Court House, will be happy to look any H up for that County. The only thing I ask is be patient since graduation is close. Will try to answer the info as soon as I can. Will need as much info as you can give me, like John Hill md Susan ca. 1910. These records covers the later dates-1910 to ca. 1970, will only answer to you direct, since we are looking at later dates. Marriage records gives date, mans name & age, woman name and age, who married them, where and witness. Death records gives year and some time date, person named, their parent if know and then what township and book. Donna
Listmembers, I have a deed written 1794 in which Isaac PORTEVINT of New Hanover Co. sells land on East side of 6 Runs to Robert MERRITT of Duplin Co. Witnesses to the deed were Samuel WEST, Asa SUTTON and Charles MERRITT. The deed was registered Sampson Co. I would like to correspond with anyone having information on any of these men. Who was each married to? Who were their children? When and where were these men born? When and where did they die? Thanks for any help. Fran fpowellsr@starpower.net
Listmembers, I have a deed from James WEST to Wiliam GAINEY/GANEY written 1786 in which James deeds lands to William. The land is located then on West side of Great Coheary and Seven Mile Swamp. Can someone locate this in present day Sampson County as I am unable to locate on either TopoZone or MapQuest. Also, I have record of a land grant to Simon WEST 1765. The land lay then in Duplin County on Balls Mill Swamp, E side of Great Cohary. Can someone locate that for me in present day Sampson County? Where were Balls Mill and Seven Mile Swamps in relationship to each other? Thanks for any help. Fran fpowellsr@starpower.net
Adger West born to Silas West b.1833 and Winifred Barefoot b. 1840. I don't have his date of birth. He was born in Westbrook Township, Sampson. He shows up in the 1880 census. But I am told he moved to GA or AL and no one has heard of him since he left. I don't know if he married or remained single. Does anyone know where Adger is now, if so please contact me. I am you great Niece. My grandfather and Gr Uncle Adger were brothers. I would appreciate any information that I can get on him. Thanks very much. Alice Ferguson

Hi Freda, Here is what I show for a Will on Nathaniel Thornton who married Millie Eldridge. It looks like you have an abstract of the same will. At least it names the same children and makes the same reference to his "eldest" children and his "younger" children (by two wives). This Nathaniel Thornton line is being researched by Elton Edwards <Elton2@triad.rr.com>, Donna Sherron <tdsherron@cs.com>, Gail Hopkins <gh529@one.net>, Ted and Freda Noble <tnoble@mcn.org>, Paul & Liz Grimes <plgrimes@bellsouth.net>, and Mamie L. Tate, 637 East Florida St., Evansville, IN 47711-4647 <mamie@sigecom.net>. If you haven't corresponded with any of these, you might want to drop them a line. I'm researching Nathaniel's brother John Thornton and Agnes Hill also of Duplin/Sampson County, NC. LAST WILL & TESTAMENT: NATHANIEL THORNTON Senr. Ordered that he enter into a bond of 500 pounds to keep said bastard child from becoming any ways chargable to this county. Securities were William Wood and Lundy Lee." I show that Clement Sills and Elizabeth Thornton married 12 Jan 1818 I believe in Johnston County, NC. I have no source listing for this so I'm not sure where I got that date. I understand that Clement and Elizabeth Sills are buried in Solomon Cemetery, Near Old Texas, Alabama. Here are also what I have for Land Deeds on Nathaniel Thornton or where his name is mentioned. I would like to request a look up from the list if anyone has any resources for Sampson Co. I need the date and location of marriage for Earnest Evander "Tobe" Williams and Rosa Esabelle Lee Lane. I have an estimated date of 1890. I am not sure where I got that. When I entered it I did not know how to source my material being new to all of this 4 years ago. Now thankfully I know much better. I would appreciate any help I could get on this matter. I am connected to all of the above mentioned names and would very much like contact with anyone else who is as well to any of them at all. I am the granddaughter of Minnie Mae Edge Williams and John Dewitt Williams. Minnie is from Bladen County, John is the grandson of Reddin Williams and Nancy Faircloth. Nancy is the daughter of Raiford Fairlcoth and Martha Jones. Raiford is the son of Samuel Faircloth and Elizabeth Unknown. John is the son of Earnest Evander "Tobe" Williams and Rosa Esabelle Lee Lane, Earnest being the son of the above Reddin. Rosa is the daughter of Willie Lane and Isabelle Sessoms. I do not know what happened to Willie. He left to treat cancer patients and was never heard from again about 1873. Isabelle died shortly after that and was raised by an aunt and uncle William " Bill" Sessoms and wife Charlotte Unknown. I would love to know more of the Faircloth, Sessoms and Lane lines. I have much to share on the Williams line back to Reddin who is the one who! seems to have dropped out of the sky. We cannot prove his parents, but he states in his Civil War papers I believe it is and census that he was born in NC. He and several other Williams men enlisted in Sampson Co on the same day and location, so I HIGHLY suspect they were either his brothers due to the close age range or possibly cousins. I would love to prove his parentage as well as siblings if anyone has knowledge of this line I would love to hear from you as well. I am very happy to share what I know of ANY of the above lines.
