    3. Dear All-- Has anyone had an opportunity to do any research using the slave schedules for our counties for 1850 and 1860? What I wonder is if Ancestry.com has images of the slave schedules for those years. I haven't subscribed in a while, and wanted to know before I made the commitment. Otherwise, I can visit the National Archives in Denver (I'm in Colorado), but it would be much easier if I could access online! Any info appreciated, as well as any info in using these schedules in general. Also, in terms of good books to read that feature genealogy research, I'd recommend two of late: Edward Jones' book The Known World (amazing book, reviewed on NPR this morning) and The Clearing, by Tim Gautreaux (about Louisiana ... based on family history research). Also, Pearl's Secret, by Neil Henry. They're all fabulous reads. Thanks in advance! 3. Kit, This is what Ancestry says about the slave schedules: SLAVE SCHEDULES At the 1850 and 1860 censuses, an enumeration of slaves was performed. Full names were rarely recorded, yet each slave was numbered. Organized by owner, each person was listed with age, sex and color. With these details, along with other facts gathered outside the schedule, it is possible to located a specific person without actually finding their name. And these are the collections they have for NC: This collection contains the following indexes: 1790 Federal Census Index; 1800 Federal Census Index; 1810 Federal Census Index; 1812-14 Muster Rolls; 1820 Federal Census Index; 1830 Federal Census Index; 1840 Federal Census Index; 1840 Pensioners List; 1850 Federal Census Index; 1860 Federal Census Index; 1870 Federal Census Index; 1890 Veterans Schedule; Early Census Index. But it doesn't mention any slave schedule! There is the US Mortality Schedule but not a separate named file for a slave schedule. Was it kept separate from the 1850 and 1860CR? Not all of 1860 has been imaged. The 1850 images are indexed for all states.
