1]I use this source to look for place names: http://geonames.usgs.gov/index.html 2]Here is a list I put together for the Cleveland list a while back that traces the Cleveland Co. townships and census enumeration districts over the years. Maybe it will be of use to some of you on the Rutherford list: Listers, I am sure that many of you have had questions as to exactly where these townships are located. Regarding Cleveland Co. townships and what they included, here is what I have gleaned from censuses, newspapers, PO lists, and maps. Some of the names and areas changed over time too. In fact, names associated with the townships came from geographic features, post offices and sometimes old tax or militia districts named after the captain of the district in the past. If anyone has corrections or additions, please post!!! I have also included a website where one can see current locations of Cleveland areas and voter districts, and several historic map sites. Also, if you have access to the Kiser map from the 1880s, you can see the townships drawn in and see where many of the folks lived at the time----I have forgotten the exact date that this map was drawn, but it is great. I've spent a bit of time lately going through census records looking for members of my Lovelace family and their descendants in Rutherford and Cleveland counties. I'm faced with the problem of having never lived in those counties, and I'm curious as to the townships I find in going through the census records. My folks were found in the Sandy Run District, in Colfax Twp., in Duncan's Creek Twp., in Logans Store Twp., and in several other areas throughout the census history. I'm curious to find if any of you know of a good resource, either hardcopy or software, either online or available elsewhere, which outlines the formations of the various districts and townships in Rutherford and Cleveland Co. through time. I have AniMap, which does an excellent job of showing changes in the boundaries of counties throughout the US. I could really use something of that sort to show me the different districts, townships, and post offices I keep finding. Anybody know of anything? Thanks in advance....
