First, the background: My greatgrandfather Patillo Golightly MAHAFFEE served in the Civil War (signed up as P.G. MAHAFFEE) but as it turned out he enlisted in S.C. and moved to Rutherford County, NC after the war. I found: http://www.ah.dcr.state.nc.us/sections/archives/arch/mars.htm a few years ago, when it was still in DOS format.
