I looked through the cemetery listings for the Powells. I was able to find Benjamin, Artie, and Isac but not the others. Do you know if Christenberry and Thomas are buried at Union Baptist Cemetery? Dillsey is listed a girl on the 1880 Census which could be a mistake and she is actually Artie but it seems like Artie may have died between the two census given how he was buried. If Dillsey were a girl and was married that might make it more difficult to find her. I guess that Maggie went by Margaret on the 1870 Census, Peggy on the 1880, and then Maggie for the rest. I am assuming that she was George F.'s mother which would mean she also went by Martha as that is what the mother is listed as on his marriage license. The license indicated that his mother was alive then and I've seen nothing that show George W. having been married twice. > No idea where you could find her cause of death unless there's a newspaper > article. 3. I have two Arties in my Melton and LeQuire families, and they are girls. I believe it may be short for Alamance. Do you know if Christenberry and > Thomas are buried at Union Baptist Cemetery? Hello, Yes Chrisenberry is buried at Union Baptist Church beside his 2nd wife Ida Jane McKee Powell. (When my Dad was growing up, they lived near Chris Powell William Thomas & his wife Mary Mauney Powell are also buried there along with all 6 of their children. > > Dillsey is listed a girl on the 1880 Census which could be a mistake and she > is actually Artie but it seems like Artie may have died between the two census > given how he was buried. Arta D Powell was listed with her parents in the 1900 Federal Census for Rutherford County, NC, and again in 1910 in the Cleveland County Census, but I've not found her in the 1920 or 1930. Judging by the size & style of the tombstone & since it has only her nickname, I think she may have died between 1910 & 1920, perhaps by whatever disease took the lives of her brother William Thomas' wife & 3 of his children from July to October of 1912 > > I guess that Maggie went by Margaret on the 1870 Census, Peggy on the > 1880, and then Maggie for the rest. The license indicated that his mother was alive > then and I've seen nothing that show George W. having been married twice. I had puzzled over whether George W was married prior to his marriage to Maggie as the 1900 Federal Census for Rutherford County (as abstracted by the Broad River Genealogical Society) indicated that George F was born in August 1881 and was shown as 18 years old. However it also stated that Maggie had borne 6 children & all six were living. I too had not found any prior marriage records for George W. Have you checked to see if there is a bastardy bond in Rutherford County for Maggie & George? Have you checked George F's death certificate? I haven't had an opportunity to pull it yet. > Do you know where I could find obituaries from that far back? Maybe Old Tryon Genealogical Society. > Thanks for your help. You're welcome, it's my pleasure. Judy
