Melody, I don't know what the laws were in NC, but I have a Georgia ancestor who, along with his siblings, was bound out even though his mother was still alive. His father died, not leaving enough of an estate to support them, and the mother remarried. The records are for the Orphan Court. It is possible that the children were not hers, of course, but those of an earlier wife... Margaret Lindsey Smith
