The Genealogical Society of Old Tryon County, North Carolina, announces their latest publication, Tryon County Documents 1769-1779 by Kathy Gunter Sullivan, Certified Genealogist. The heart of the volume is a compilation of previously unpublished Tryon County Court Civil Dockets. These records are currently archived in three separate locations and have been virtually inaccessible until this publication. Severe record losses suffered in Tryon's parent county, Mecklenburg, and its parent county, Anson, increases the value of any extant records in this geographic area. Some people were in the area briefly before migrating or dying during 1769-1779; therefore, there may be no other documentation for their presence here. Civil action dockets are companion records to county court minutes and reflect the progress of legal actions pursued in county court. Because not all suits were carried into the courtroom, much information on the dockets is not available through county court minutes, nor in any other record. Legal language and format can discourage genealogists attempting to use this type primary-source record, but the compiler has overcome this problem. She has provided twenty-one pages of explicit guidance on deciphering and applying docket research, reproductions of each kind of document, and a glossary. These are followed by a case-by-case examination of every action appearing in the original papers. The volume also includes an extensive discussion of extant Tryon County records, providing a ready-reference for the researcher. All of the following records available at the North Carolina Archives are transcribed: Tryon County loose civil action papers and any signatures; Tryon County miscellaneous papers and signatures; Tryon County wills and signatures with notation of extant estates papers. Minutes of the Tryon County Committee of Safety are transcribed, accompanied by facsimiles of the original record and signatures of its members. Signatures of presiding Justices of the Peace are reproduced. The only extant map depicting Tryon County is reproduced (1775). Indexed by full name, place, and topic, and cross-referenced. Smyth-sewn, case-bound, 292 pages. Price: $29.00 to Society members plus 6% North Carolina State tax and $4.00 shipping/handling. $35.00 to non-members plus 6% State tax and $4.00 shipping. Genealogical Society of Old Tryon County, P.O. Box 938, Forest City, North Carolina 28043-0938.

Reasons vary, but back in the old days they weren't into good record keeping. Court House fires are one obvious reason. Virginia
Hello Everyone, I am having trouble finding the marriage record of my 4th great grandparents Thomas Wilkinson and Anne Nowlin in Rutherford ca. 1802. Two of Anne's siblings who I know were married (James Nowlin, Harden Nowlin) around the same time also cannot be found in the Rutherford county published marriage bonds. It appears from other documents that both the Wilkinsons and Nowlins were in Rutherford in the years the marriage would have taken place. Has anyone else came across this problem or possibly have an explanation of what might have happened? A mass exodus for a few months? To where? Why no marriage bonds? Any help is greatly appreciated! Is anyone researching this man? I'd like to chat w/you if you are. Could he be the father of MARY Y. CARSON who married JOHN KENDALL WELLS Sr. in 1832? This excerpt is from: History of Old Tryon and Rutherford Counties North Carolina, 1730-1946, by Clarence W. Griffin, County Historian, Rutherford County, Forest City, North Carolina. The Reprint Company, Publishers, Spartanburg, South Carolina, 1977. Originally published 1904. Page 135, Footnote No. 7- SHERIFF WILLIAM CARSON was born about 1773 in Pennsylvania, a son of Dan Carson. His mother was a McFarland. The family emigrated to Rutherford County about 1790, and settled near Hollis. William was one of a family of three brothers and four sisters. General John C. Carson was one of the brothers. Sheriff William married Dorcas Huey, and settled on a good farm near Duncan's Creek Presbyterian Church, in the vicinity of Hollis. To them were born four daughters. General John Carson married a daughter of Capt. James Withrow, and reared six sons and six daughters. William served as sheriff of Rutherford County from 1798 to 1809 and from 1821 to 1836, and as state senator in 1810. His nephew, James W. Carson, a son of Gen. John Carson, later succeeded him as sheriff. He was William's favorite deputy. William Carson is buried at the old Price family cemetery, near Hollis. The inscription on his monument shows that he died January 16, 1845, in his 72nd year. His wife died October 12, 1851, aged 75 years. He was an extensive landowner, and one of the county's leading citizens of his day, and a staunch member of the Presbyterian Church. ~~~~~~~ Glenna Kinard ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Researching: (1) Porter, McCants, Cobb, Martin, Rawlinson, Gill, Higgins, Scott, Harrison, Fetner; (2) Bryant, McDade, Dillard, Tolleson, Wells, Baxter, Eaves; (3) Kinard, Wise, Thaxton, Vickers, Patton, Hubbard, Wilkins, Long/Lang, Latta (Branch 28), Mauldin, Dismukes. I am seeking any additional information that you can provide about the parents/siblings of Pleasant Webb. Thanks a million. ================================================================ Pleasant (Plesent) WEBB was born about ca 1760-1765. His son, Elias, said that his father, Pleasant was born in Ireland (not substantiated). He died between 1830 and 1840 in Ohio, USA. Around 1800 Pleasant and family came in to the Ohio valley from Rutherford County, North Carolina. In 1803 (reported to be 45 years old) he was in Scioto County, Ohio and was said to be a notorious character. Supposedly, he tried to break up a fight between James Bradley and the wife and children of James Quire (Squires). He ended up shooting Mr. Quire (Squires). After this incident at the Licks, he was driven out of that area. He is also said to have been a Tory during the Revolutionary War. Pleasant was in GreenupCounty, Kentucky in 1820 and in Lawrence County, Ohio in 1830, he did not appear in the 1840 census, so it is believed he died between 1830-1840. Pleasant (Plesent) WEBB and Unknown (Margaret BLACKWELL?) had the following children: James WEBB (1786), Elias WEBB (1788), Thomas Hanley WEBB (1795), Aden WEBB (1797), Temperance WEBB (1799), William WEBB (1801), Margaret WEBB (1806), Sarah (Sally) WEBB (1809), and Baker WEBB (1811). List, I am trying to establish confirmation on the parents of Lucinda Padgett. This Lucinda Padgett was born abt. 1835 and married James McGinnis in Cleveland Co. in April 1855. I have seen conflicting information. One pedigree shows her parents as William Padgett and Jenny Jane Salyers, another shows William Padgett with spouse Letitia Hyder. William possibly could have been married twice, but I was hoping someone out there would have more detailed information that could help focus my search. I could also use any information on the parents of James McGinnis as well. Thanks, Tony McGinnis Raleigh, NC DaMcGncsu@aol.com
Hello, Rutherford Co. researchers :-) I have some questions about some material sent to me by cousin Rhonda Tallman from Charlotte, NC (Hi, Rhonda, and Thanks!!!!). I received a few photocopied pages from the book _Sketches, Historical and Biographical of the Broad River and King's Mountain Associations from 1800-1882_ by John Logan. Rhonda told me she had gotten copies from the OTCGS. I was just wondering if anyone has a bibliographic citation for this publication. Rhonda also sent me copies of Chapters 1-5 (pp 1-29) of a printed history of High Shoal Baptist Church. Chapter 1 is entitled "Beginnings and Growth (1790-1825)". Would any of you have a bibliographic citation for this? Thanks in advance, all :-) Peace, Part of the Tree, Greg

The following was in the Dailey Courier, Sunday, April 08, 2001: This may be of interest to researchers. County has varied resources for genealogists Forest City - Over 550 out-of-area visitors from 22 states and two foreign countries visited the Genealogical Society of Old Tryon County last year, searching for family or local history. Rutherford County Historian Nancy Ellen Ferguson said that because old county borders extended all the way into present-day Tennessee, Rutherford County is ground zero for many people seeking early historical and genealogical documents. Most people come to the county searching for birth and death certificates, wills, marriage bonds and deeds, said Ferguson. Much of the material can be found at the County Courthouse, but local historical collections at the County Library, the Old Tryon Historical Collection at Isothermal Community College and the Genealogical Society also offer access to information. The Rutherford County Clerk of Superior Court office has old court minutes and wills and the Register of Deeds office has marriage bonds, deeds, birth and death certificates, said Ferguson. The county Tax Assessor's office also has some information about property ownership, but the oldest records are in Raleigh. Ferguson said the county is lucky to have copies of the old land grant records which are also now held in Raleigh. Rutherford and Burke counties were the only two counties to get such copies of the original documents granting private ownership to settlers. "The land grant was the first record made. A deed wasn't made until the land was sold, and with the original land grants, most of them have a plat of the land as it was surveyed," said Ferguson. Jim Womack, president of The Genealogical Society of Old Tryon County which maintains copies of the old land grants, said that the Society has about 700 family histories and over 2,300 history books that refer to area lore. The society also maintains about 6,000 to 7,000 bulletins from other genealogical societies. The Genealogical Society is looking for new headquarters, but is currently located on the third floor of the Old Farmer's Bank Building at 102 W. Main St., Forest City. The society is funded entirely by membership dues and donations. Member ship is $17.50 for an individual and $20 for a family. The society has library, staffed by volunteers and is open three days per week. It is normally open Wednesday through Friday form 9 a. m. until 2 p. m. and on Saturday from 1:30 to 4 p. m. The phone number is (828) 248-4010. Ronald W. Arrowood Rutherford Co., NC
