I am in the process of digitizing the rest of the Rutherford Co., NC Deed Index. I am part way through the "R's" as I write. I will be happy to do look-ups in these pictures but only if you limit your request to one full name per E-Mail. I will not even answer requests for multiples or "all the Smiths", etc. According to the load, I will either send a .jpg attachment of the info or an abstract of the info. This method seems to work right well. You do need a 3 megapixel or better camera. The only drawback is they have to be viewed on the PC since print on 8.5 x 11 is just too small. This may very well be the way that many of us could collect records and make the info available to all. We can always store the info on CD's. We'll see!!! Bill
Hello listers, I am new on this list and am wondering if there are others on this list researching Aaron Weatherby who, from what I understand, lived in Rutherford Co. between 1800 and 1830? Are there any County books that might cover the people who lived there at that time? Thanks for your help. Betty
I have a couple of questions for Bill or anyone else who has answers. When I was doing deed research (on my Lindsey family) in the Rutherford Co. Courthouse I had to make notes by hand because there did not seem to be a copier available. Also, I found nothing but land records, and no one seemed to know whether or not anything else was available. Is it now possible to make copies? Are there probate records, wills, or other records of interest to genealogists available, either at the courthouse or another location? My Lindseys were in Rutherford in the late 1700s and early 1800s, so that is the time period in which I am interested. Thanks in advance for any advice! Margaret Lindsey Smith
Bill, Thank you for reminding the people they do have a responsibility to clean up after themselves. These records are precious things that need to be taken care of. Every time I go to Raleigh, I think how wonderful it is that these old records have been preserved so well. When people don't take the responsibility to treat them with care, they don't deserve be able to look at them. These are our heritage and we need to make sure they remain so for the future generations to come after us. Also, thank you to you for trying to preserve they by taking care of them when you are in the courthouse. I have been to these record rooms several times to be really confused by not finding something that was suppose to be in a certain place and wasn't. Nancy Sanders
OK, I have all the pictures in my PC so we can give this a little test. The Rutherford Co., NC Birth Index from 1914-1925 lists the child's name, the father, the book/page and the year. It is an INDEX. I will try to do look-ups if you will send the complete name that you need, either the child or the father. If you send just a surname, I will completely ignore it. If I get too many requests I will probably extract the info. If there is just a few requests I will probably send the whole .jpg picture as an attachment. My E-maill address is wdfloyd@rfci.net Bill
Dear Fellow Genealogists, I have just spent at least half an hour in the Rutherford Co., NC Register of Deeds Office's records room placing all the indexes, deed books, marriage books and census books back in order on the shelves. I have done this same thing many times before and I have been in the room when fellow researchers were in there working. I have seen them get a book out and use and rather than put it up as they went to get anothe book, they just left it laying or put it in the slot where the book they were getting one from. This is a problem that we will no longer have when the freedom to handle the books and do research is no longer permitted. The index that I was working with was a birth index and the book binder was pretty much destroyed but someone had intentionally ripped one of the pages out of the book. We tend to think most of the "county employees" have nothing to do but for the most part when I have been in the office they have been going strong. Most of the time they donot h! ave the time to straighten up the mess everyday. They have a bit of slack time occasionally and do straighten it up so they can get to their work. Most of what stays in such a mess is the oldest indexes and records and most of the Deeds Office work is in the newer records. Occasionally I have observed a surveyor or lawyer not putting the book back in place but it is mostly us. We need to make it a point to do better. Bill
I must be missing the post on the Birth Index Test. How does one get the index to test? I'm very interested, thanks! Rhonda Bridges Tallman
To all that is considering a trip to the Rutherford Co., NC Courthouse. It is now undergoing renovations. The Register Of Deeds Office and all their records will be as was in the new part of the courthouse so you can research there fine. The rest of the courthouse records are in a portion of a renovated textile plant and I don't know what records or whether there is anyway to do research there or not. This old plant is a couple of miles to the east in the town of Spindale, NC. I will attempt to find out if research there is going to be OK. I don't have any idea how long this will last. Bill
Folks one thing that I failed to say in the original post about the Rutherford Co., NC Birth Index pictures is, you will not be able to print them out in usable form. They are too large. Use your PC and zoom in to 100% and then scroll about the pic to view what you need to. The ones thay have recieved the pictures please let me know how it works and looks. Bill
To all with an interest in Rutherford Co., NC genealogy I am doing a little testing with a digital camera int the feasibility of using it to have records in my PC where I could do look-ups or just attach a .jpg picture of the page with the info on it. It isn't feasible to place them all online on my webpage, just too much hardrive space used. I have already on my PC the birth index from 1914 to about 1925 through the letter "H". I will have to do some of them over because I chopped some info off. What is on the index is the name of the person who was born, the name of his/her father, the year of birth and the book/page that it is recorded in. What I need is some of you to send some requests for look-ups in the ones that I have and then send me some feedback about how well you was able to read the info and about how long it took to download. I will be sending copies of the .jpg files and they are anywhere from a half meg to nearly a meg long. Lets give it a try and see how it! works. Don't over load me. Just send one request at a time. Thanks, Bill
Sorry folks but on my post regarding Mary Iona Walker Tate (below)- she may have been called Mary Doane/Ione Walker Tate. Thanks again, Gloria Does anyone have a Mary Iona Walker Tate in their database? She was born probably in 1871 in Rutherford County, d/o William and Martha Smith Walker. She was still alive in May 1942, when her older sister (my great grandmother-Nancy Wilkins Walker Westbrook Henderson) died. Any information will be so appreciated!! Thanks, Gloria Forrester

Would like to hear from anyone who may have an interest in or connection with Alexander Coulter who was in what was Rutherford County NC in the late 1700's. SAM Sam01G@aol.com
I made these transcriptions in the Rutherford Co. courthouse some time ago, and finally got them typed up. I hope they help someone. Interesting. There was a close relationship between my Maroons and the Hardins. Also, there was some sort of relationship (neighbors?) between Peter and John Maroon and the Collins family. Hello, I have been finding my Wilkinson's deeds in Rutherford County these last few months. I am have a question which I hope someone on this list may have an answer or solution to. In the deeds below Thomas Wilkinson bought land three times and sold land twice. These are the only deeds that I can find in the county. The problem is, the land descriptions don't match. He bough land on Varen's/Bowen's Creek, Harris Creek, and Hanson's Creek, but the selling of land doesn't match what he bought (sold on Varen's and Jumping Branch). Has anyone else ran across this type of thing? Did Thomas sell of all his land? I am confused by this information. Also, I am looking for where Thomas moved to (probably in TN) about 1824. I would appreciate anyone sharing where their families may have moved to around that time. Thanks, Melody 1.
