Hello All, If you have not looked at this site yet, http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/ and you're searching NC, you really ought to go look..... especially go click on the left column where it says county formation and take a look at the great maps from 1700-1912 that Derick Hartshorn has put together (thanks Derick). This has been a huge help to me in trying to understand just where some of my ancestors were from census to census. I wish all states had such maps available on line. Audrey Orlando, FL

Briscoe' son of Phillip & Nancy Barton Briscoe is actually N.L. and is the same as in the 1860 census named Lafayette. I suspect he was Nathan Lafayette but have no proof. And for my question - You referred to NC Bible records in some other info you sent me as a reference for children Hannah and Harriet of Phillip and Nancy Barton Briscoe. Where can I obtain a copy of those bible records? I have more info on the children of Phillip Henson and Sarah Brisco if you need it. Also saw the post from Charmaine, and the name William 'Squire' Morgan jumped out at me. These Morgans are probably related to Sarah Morgan, mother of Daniel Boone, who is buried in Rowan County. I have a relationship to them on my father's side of the family. The Briscoes, Robbins, Splawns are my mom's side. It was truly a 'small world' back then... Carol: I have a few pieces I can add to your list of descendants you posted this morning. I am researching the Morgans, Wilkersons and numerous other related families in western NC. James Webb Morgan, the only son of Elijah Morgan and Rutha Wilkerson. Rutha died a few days after James was born. Elijah then married Susannah Reel in Nov. 1820 in Burke Co., NC and had several more children. The family lived in McDowell Co., NC after it was formed in 1842. James Webb Morgan b. 2 May 1820 - d. 28 June 1906 married Henrietta "Hattie" W. Briscoe (I know you have her name as Harriett), b. 8 October 1817 - d. 14 July 1902, d/o Philip and Nancy Barton Briscoe, on 9 December 1846, Rutherford Co., NC. Both James and Hattie are buried at Montford's Cove Baptist Church Cemetery in Rutherford Co., NC. children: Rutha "Ruthie" Jane Morgan b. 28 Sept. 1847 married Rev. Adin L. Rucker on 20 Sept. 1870. Philip Briscoe Morgan b. 12 March 1849 - d. 21 October 1885, married Mary E. Weaver on 9 November 1876. Nancy Melvina Morgan b. 11 February 1851, married G. W. Crawford on 16 March 1872. Harriett Susan Morgan b. 12 February 1853 - d. 27 Dec. 1907, married on 5 July 1879, Zachary Taylor Whiteside, b. 12 Dec. 1846 - d. 11 June 1907, s/o Thomas Hemphill Whiteside and Almira Catherine Lynch Whiteside. Both are buried at the Whiteside family cemetery in Rutherford Co., NC. James Lafayette Morgan b. 21 September 1854 - d. 1938, married Isabelle Moore. Sarah "Sallie" L. Morgan b. 9 February 1858 - d. 22 June 1908, married L. Logan Hampton. (nothing else known) Elijah Morgan b. abt. 1855 (nothing else known) Larance (from 1860 Rutherford census), probably not the correct name since the child is listed as a female of age 1 1/2 in 1860. (Nothing else known). Frances Morgan b. abt. 1860 ______________________________________________ Martha Jane Briscoe married William "Squire" Morgan on 17 May 1861 in Rutherford Co., NC. Martha Jane was William's 2nd wife. He had first been married to his 1st cousin Martha Morgan, who died 6 October 1854. William was born in 1811 to Jesse and Mary "Polly" Grant Morgan and the family had moved to the Hominy Valley (Candler) area of Buncombe Co., NC when he was a young child. William and James Webb Morgan were 1st cousins. I have no further information on William and Martha Jane Briscoe Morgan. ________________________________________ So many of these families are interrelated and appear in various western NC counties. The families, especially the Morgans, were very active in spreading the Baptist doctrine and establishing new churches throughout the Appalachian region (western NC, north GA., east TN.) and many followed Rev. Humphrey Posey in this missions work. Rev. Humphrey Posey and Rev. Permenter Morgan, the grandfather of James Webb Morgan and William Morgan were early Baptist ministers in Rutherford Co., NC, co-founding Bill's Creek Baptist Church in Rutherford Co., NC in 1785. I hope some of this information helps you in finding further descendants of the Briscoe family. Charmaine

Granville Webb was a son of Elias Webb who was a son of Pleasant Webb. After the Civil War, Granville and family moved to Sauk County, Wisconsin. Notice the other Webb family in the 1880 Wisconsin census. Could these be relatives. If so, maybe Pleasant Webb came into NY or CT or MA and moved down into NC. Dear Friends and Cousins, The Sons of the American Revolution has approved my genealogical link with Mark Bird, Ironmasters Kin of Birdsboro PA. I'll provide details individually, having respect for your busy mailboxes. But allow me enough to provide enough info to see how you might connect. After providing Revolutionary War service, Mark Bird moved to the NC/SC border country and other names in my family include Cooper, Roberts, and Nance, with ties in Rutherford and Cleveland County NC. The Bird/Nance line that ties in is from York County SC (Marcus Ross Bird and Dorinda Nance). I have proved the line to the SAR from me to the Patriot, so all you need do is to provide documentation that you connect somewhere along that line and you will be eligible for Sons of the American Revolution or Daughters of the American Revolution membership. James E. Stone SAR member through service of: Pvt. William McSwain, 10th North Carolina Line Regiment, Continental Army Col Marcus John Bird, PA Malitia and provider of iron products to the Continental Army from Hopewell Furnace http://www.nps.gov/hofu/ and provider of 1000 barrels of flour to George Washington at Valley Forge as per the Congressional Record.

Save the Trading Ford! Public ForumPlease read.....I thought this important enough to forward to our lists...I apologize if you are on more than one and receive it several times. Thank you, Debbie Fowler ----- Original Message ----- From: Ann Brownlee Sent: Saturday, October 13, 2001 02:22 Subject: Save the Trading Ford! Public Forum -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SAVE THE HISTORIC TRADING FORD! Public Forum Monday, October 29th, 2001, 7:00 pm Rowan Public Library, Stanback Room, 201 West Fisher Street, Salisbury, NC (This event is not sponsored by the Rowan Public Library) Duke Power Company is seeking approval to build an additional power plant at the Buck Steam Plant site in Rowan county. This is on land that borders the Yadkin River at the historic Trading Ford, the river crossing associated with the Indian Trading Path from what is now Petersburg Va. through North Carolina (very roughly along the route of present Interstate 85) to the Waxhaws and Catawbas in Georgia and South Carolina. There are records of Indian cultures in the area as early as 1567, when a Spanish fort, which has not been located, was believed to have been built near the ford. Early explorers John Lederer and John Lawson visited the ford in 1670 and 1701, and also described the Indians who resided there. The ford played a vital role in early European colonization and, although opinions differ, may have been the crossing of the Great Wagon Road at some time. There was a Revolutionary War camp, also not located, in the area in 1780 under the command of General Jethro! Sumner. Gen. Nathanael Greene and his forces crossed the Yadkin River at the Trading Ford on February 2nd and 3rd, 1781, taking all the boats with him and leaving Cornwallis' British army unable to pursue. A rear guard engagement occurred on February 3rd, and the British cannonaded the American forces across the river on February 4th. Nearby there are the remains of a bridge built in 1818, a Civil War entrenchment, and the birthplace and family cemetery of NC Governor John W. Ellis (whose remains were later removed to Salisbury). Some of the historic features in this area are still intact, while others have been destroyed by the backwaters of High Rock Lake, a railroad yard on the Davidson county side of the Yadkin River, and the present Duke Power plant. While the proposed site of the new plant is not known to further endanger historic features, it would further visually intrude, further damage a meaningful sense of history, and make the future possibility of reclaiming the site for historic use more difficult. Public comments are encouraged at a NC Utilities Commission hearing which will be held Thursday, November 8, 2001, at 10:00 a.m., in Room 2115, Dobbs Building, 430 North Salisbury Street, Raleigh, NC. Written statements may be submitted and will be included in the Commission's official files; however the Commission will determine whether the certificate should be granted to Duke Power on the basis of testimony presented at the hearing. Written statements should be addressed to: Chief Clerk, North Carolina Utilities Commission, 4325 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-4325. Additional information is available online at http://home.webkorner.com/whigkid/tradingford/ and by contacting Ann Brownlee, whigkid@webkorner.com , 704-633-3125. Please pass this information on to anyone who may be interested.
I'm trying to find info on the following deed listed in the index. Caddel, John / Harges, William / Deed/22-23/154/1804 Any help appreciated. Bill Caddell
First of all, let me explain that I have the Rutherford Co., NC Deed Index online on my webpage at http://www.rfci.net/wdfloyd UP THROUGH MOST OF THE LETTER "M". This is basically in alphabetical order and you can use the "find" feature on your browser to search. I have had many requests to finish the Deed Index but I don't have the time to sit and abstract the rest of it so I am in the process making digital pictures of the rest of the index and I will be able to do look-ups. Right now I have pictures up into the letter "R" and can do look-ups as long as it is one complete name per E-mail and I will not accept "all the Smiths", etc. I will continue to make the pictures until I get it complete. I hope I have explained it so that everyone understands. I have already placed several messages on the list and all of the the requests that I have recieved have been for something that is already on the webpage or in the part that I don't have the pictures for yet. I am glad to try and help out but I won't even answer anymore E-mail that either wants me to do a look-up in the ! part that is online or the part that I don't have pictures for. As I get more of the photos ready, I will notify everyone in the "Whats New" section on my webpage. Bill
Hello All, I'm looking for a Rogers family (I don't have parent's names). They might have lived in Rutherford in the late 1800's. They had a son William born in 1796 and a son Joel born in 1798. Not sure if there were more brothers or sisters. I know that William married Mary Mitchell and had children: Williamson and Amanda Melinda. Joel married Sally Norred and had children: Marshall P., William, James, George and Caroline. If you know who the parents were and if they lived in Rutherford, any information would be appreciated. Thank You Very Much. Eileen Rogers Mullins
