March 10, 1903 THOMAS WARLICK, of Hickory, aged 14 years tips the scales at 220 pounds. If THOMAS keeps on growing at his rate, he will be a big man at 21 years. 1. [NCRUTHER-L] POORHOUSE Information for NC
    2. Poor House Lady
    3. We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com Please excuse the cross postings, but we just published poorhouse information about a great many counties in NORTH CAROLINA. Our partial list of counties known to have poorhouses includes: Beaufort/Buncombe/Burke/Cabarrus/Caswell/Cleveland/Craven/Cumberland/Davidso n/Duplin/Edgecombe/Granville/Guilford/Halifax/Iredell/Johnston/Lenoir/Lincol n/Mecklenburg/Montgomery/Moore/Nash/NewHanover/Northampton/Orange/Richmond/R ockingham/Rowan/ Rutherford/Stokes/Surry/Warren/Wayne Our list of counties for which the NC State Archives has poor relief and/or poorhouse records includes: Alexander/Ashe/Bertie/Beaufort/Buncombe/Carteret/Chatham/Cherokee/Cleveland/ Craven/Currituck/Davie/Edgecombe/Granville/Guilford/Hyde/Iredell/Lincoln/Mon tgomery/Nash/NewHanover/Northampton/Orange/Pasquotank/Perquimans/Person/Polk /Rowan/Rutherford/ Sampson/Stanley/Surry/Union/Wake/Wayne/Yadkin We have provided more historical notes from the archives on the page with their holdings listed. DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on NORTH CAROLINA on the table of states. If you will scroll down to the section on "Local Notes", you will find the poorhouse list; and then scrolling down to "Records", you will see the archives holdings list. These entries are marked with yellow NEW arrows. (NOTE: If you have visited the site recently, you may have to click on REFRESH on your browser to see the new information.) There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)

    1. [NCRUTHER-L] Land Sale Verification for a William Cornelius late 1780-1820
    2. Dear List members, I'm new to this list after finding out I have early roots in Rutherford Co. I was wondering what type of land records are available online or off during the years after the Rev. War? I've been told my 5th great-grandfather, William Cornelius, and his wife Lettice, sold land in Rutherford Co. before moving to Greenville District, SC. He is listed in the 1790 Greenville, SC Census and served in the Cont. Line as a Matross from NC. Could some help me locate evidence of this, by doing a lookup in early NC Land record Books or abstracts of such books for any evidence of a Cornelius Family being granted, buying and/or selling land between the Rev. War and say 1820? Or at least guide to where online or off I can go to look for such verifications. I'd also be interested in knowing of any people named Cornelius or variations thereof that might be listed in early Rutherford Co. Marriage Books, Marriage Bonds or the like. Thank you so much for your time. Happy New Year! Robert C. Johnston, Jr. 139 Eagle Creek Drive Wetumpka, AL 36092 USA rcj@mindspring.com

    2. Bushrod Suttle was the oldest son of Joseph Suttle & Mary Doggett. Joseph Suttle and family (including Bushrod) moved to Rutherford County NC sometime in the late 1770s/early 1780s. Bushrod is believed to have married a Mary (surname unknown) in Rutherford County circa 1783. Information from the 1800 and 1810 Rutherford County census indicates that Bushrod & Mary had 5 boys and 1 girl, but only two have been identified (son John born 6 June 1785 and daughter Anna born circa 1801, both apparently in Rutherford County). I an searching for Bushrod & Mary's marriage date/location, Mary's maiden surname, and names/birth dates for the four unknown sons. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, Nicholas and Alex was both listed ( in the History of Tryon County North Carolina) as arrested for actitivies in the KKK at the same time . Alex was sent to Albany, N.Y. on a steamship in 1872 to serve time for being in KKK. I had been told that Alex was a Grand Dragon in the KKK. by my grandmother. Could they have been brothers???? I know that Alex had a sister named Amanda Bridges who married a Lewis Henderson. Lewis and Amanda also lived in Cherokee County, S. C.! Lewis later married Grace Young. Does anyone know anything about these Bridges. Also, could Alex have been a nickname? The children of Alex and Rebecca were 1. M. L. (Marcus or Markey ) Bridges who married Julie Price. 2. Susan Bridges who married John Hammett 3. Mary Bridges who married Theo Bright. 4. Nancy Bridges who married Thomas Dickson (Richard ) Cobb .(my greatgrandparents) 5. Parthina Bridges who married Elish Scruggs. 6. Letha Bridges who marred George Jefferson (Jeff) Scruggs--brother of Elish Scruggs. 7. Billy Bridges who married Martha Price. Billy moved to Mississippi. Any help would be welcome. Thank you, Judy Carver
