I'm trying to figure out how to find pages numbered below 231 on the 1850 census. According to the index on the Rutherford Co site, these pages have 'No Twp Listed'. I have the Family Quest CD of the microfilm for Rutherford and Sampson Counties, as well as access to the images online at Ancestry.com. and I have not been able to find these pages. Am I missing something? Thanks, Tamara

I can barely contain my excitement. For those of who are descended from William Baxter/Sarah Berryhill or Jennie Lee, this is a real treasure. Thanks to Elaine Eaves Cox for alerting me to this find. This month's issue of Georgia Backroads magazine has an article titled: "The Georgia Ax Murders." It is a very detailed and well researched account of the gruesome death of Wm.'s son Wm. Jr. (1796-1838) and his son James Newton Baxter, age 12, and Caroline(a) Baxter, age 13, dau. of Andrew Baxter. If you are interested in obtaining a copy, contact the publication at: 770-642-5569. Or email at: olin@georgiahistory.ws. There is no website. I have seen accounts of this murder in family data previously, but nothing as far-reading and detailed as this telling of the story. I highly recommend you obtain a copy if you are a descendant. I ordered 3 copies for my children and me last week and was told they "have plenty" on hand if others are interested. I wish that I had more of the reference, but I must have typed in hundreds of pages of info. when I checked out all these books and sometimes I failed to obtain all the pertinent info. as it was not known to be a part of my tree and I suspected that I would never use the info. again and I also knew how to return to the original source...
This may or may not be of any help to you on the questions you ask about Greens and Jones. For several years I've tried to identify Gracie Jones family. She was the wife of Rev. Permenter Morgan of Rutherford Co., NC, and I have looked at various records for Jones also living in Rutherford Co in the period 1779 to 1830 trying to see if I can find any Jones who may connect. I have had little luck, but some of the notes I have collected may help you. Rutherford Co., NC will abstracts 1779 - 1910 , Turner and Philbeck, 1982 shows a will for John Jones (Sandy Run) written 15 Sept. 1819. List wife Ann. Daughters: Sarah Buchanon, Martha Green, Elizabeth Buchanon, Nancy Green, Francis Bridges, Mildred McKinney. Sons: Stephen Jones, Edmond Jones, Robert Jones, John Jones, Jr, Lewis Jones, Elijah Jones, Allen Jones and Sterling Jones, dec'd- his children. Son Sterling Jones also left a will written 20 Sept. 1816, probated October 1817. List wife Fanney. Daughter Elizabeth. Sons: James Jones, Nathaniel Jones. There is a marriage bond for a Lucy Green to George Green 13 March 1784 in Rutherford Co., NC, bondsman Kusiah Johnson, but I don't find a bond for either Martha or Nancy Jones to Greens in Rutherford Co., NC. Edmund Jones marriage bond to Susannah McKinney is dated 17 January 1803 Rutherford Co., NC William McKinney bondsman. The witness listed is Drury Dobbins, a well known Baptist preacher in the area, who was pastor of Sandy Run Baptist church. More on Drury Dobbins below. The marriage bond for John Green to Leathey McKinney is dated 20 December 1819 in Rutherford Co., NC, with William Green as bondsman. There was a bond for Aaron Green to Pheby McKinney dated 18 September 1831 in Burke Co., NC with bondsmen, Elijah Green and James A. Harris. I don't know if these are related but the names share some similarities. There is a marriage bond for Shad Green to Mary Gage dated 20 December 1782 Rutherford Co., NC. Timothy Riggs bondsman. I can't find a bond for a Shadrach Green to Martha or "Patsy" Green in the Rutherford/Burke Co marriage abstracts. A Shadrach Green appears as bondsman on several bonds: 11 Feb. 1822 - Absolem Green/Elizabeth Philbeck Rutherford Co., NC - bm: Shadrach Green; George Philbeck Wit: Drury Dobbins 11 Dec. 1829 - Jonathan Burlison/Gemimah Dunkin Burke Co., NC - bm: Shadrack Green; Harris Pittman - D. P. 26 Jul. 1832 - Abner Green/Elizabeth Wilson Rutherford Co., NC - bm: Shadrach Green Wit: Drury Dobbins 1 August 1838 - Marvel Green/Elizabeth Dicus Rutherford Co., NC - bm: Shadrach Green Wit: Drury Dobbins 30 Janaury 1838 - Cornelius Green/Martha Harrell Rutherford Co., NC - bm: Shadrach Green Wit: Drury Dobbins Elder Drury Dobbins, according to Deacon John R. Logan in Sketches, Historical and Biographical of the Broad River and King's Mountain Baptist Association from 1800 to 1882, pub. 1887, Shelby, NC, was ordained as a minister in 1803 and was a delegate to the Broad River Baptist Association meeting in the Fall of 1803 as a representative of Sandy Run (Baptist) Church. At that time Sandy Run was in Rutherford Co., NC but that area became part of Cleveland Co., when it was formed in 1841. From the John Jones will identifying him as living in Sandy Run and then the appearance of Drury Dobbins as witness (many times the minister who married the couple) of the 4 Green marriages in Rutherford Co., NC with Shadrach as witness, you may find further information on both these families if you can locate a copy of the Minutes of Sandy Run Baptist Church for that time period. I have one other Jones question about those living in early Rutherford Co., NC. Does any one know who Standifer Jones belongs to? I am interested in Martha "Patsy" Jones whose marriage bond with Joseph Reel 14 July 1835, with Standifer Jones as bondsman. Can any one identify either Jones and who they belong to? I hope some of this helps you. And thanks to any one who can shed any light on my Jones families. Charmaine

Hi, Mary At 06:40 PM 3/8/02 -0500, you wrote: > well I must say you have me totally confused. Sorry :-) I'm confused, too.... I was trying to quote what I found in that gedcom and trying to get confirmation or proof that it wasn't so :-) >your talking about a brother to Edmund Jones are you referring to John >Jones whom married Elizabeth Poole (Pettypoole) (these are my direct >ancestors) and john I know nothing about before him. The first John Jones I referred to was John Judson Jones. He was (according to this gedcom file) the son of Edmund and Susannah McKinney Jones. Edmund was the son of John and Elizabeth Pool Jones. John was the son of Benjamin and Amy Parish Jones. And I just checked, and you are correct... I made a mistake in looking at the relationships on the screen. I was looking at a descendancy chart for Benjamin Jones, and didn't follow the lines correctly. The Edmund I referred to IS listed as the SON of John and Elizabeth, NOT THE BROTHER. My apologies. But that still leaves open the question about the Shadrachs.... >I have a cousin who has a book, but don't believe that shadrack is in >it. will check with her. OK, thank you. And sorry for the confusion.... Peace. Part of the Tree, Greg
Hi, all I received a gedcom file many years ago which deals with many Rutherford Co., NC families, and I have been using it as a reference file for a good while. Today, while running through the 1850 Cleveland Co. census, I ran across the family of John J. Jones, singing master, on p137 in dwelling #305. I did not have him in my main database, so I wanted to see if he appeared in this gedcom file, and the answer was yes. This file has him as a descendant of Benjamin (of Wales) and Amy Parrish Jones through the following line of descent: Benjamin Jones (14712), b. circa 1720 +Amy Parrish (14713), b. circa 1720 +-- Edmund Jones (9015), b. 08 Sep 1786 Rutherford, NC, d. 29 Aug 1857 NC ¦ +Susannah McKinney (3038), b. 01 Mar 1785 Franklin County, m. 17 Jan 1808 Rutherford Co, d. 13 Feb 1866 ¦ +-- John Judson Jones (7241), b. 23 Feb 1824, d. 23 Jun 1899 ¦ ¦ +Nancy Hamrick (7240), b. 14 Apr 1825 Rutherford Co, m. 18 Jul 1841 Rutherford Co, d. 01 Mar 1887 What has me puzzled and writing this note to you all is the listing of a brother to Edmund Jones and his family: +-- John Jones (14682), b. 19 Feb 1749/50 Virginia, d. 30 May 1821 +Elizabeth Pool (14683), b. 1750 Virginia, m. 27 Jul 1771 Virginia, d. 20 Sep 1818 NC-Buried at Sandy Run Baptist Church, Mooresbord, Cleveland Co, NC +-- Martha 'Patsy' Jones (14687), b. 26 May 1773 ¦ +Shadrack Green (14688), b. 1770 ¦ +-- John Green (15354), b. 1797, d. 14 Jul 1858 ¦ +Aletha 'Leathey' McKinney (15353), b. 04 Mar 1801 York County, m. 20 Dec 1819 Rutherford Co, d. 28 Jun 1890 I'm familiar with John and Aletha McKinney Green. In fact, I have John as the son of Shadrack Green. Problem is, I have Shadrack married to Mary Gage per records obtained from another cousin. My questions: Was there a marriage between Shadrack Green and Martha Jones? Was there a marriage between Shadrack Green and Mary Gage? If the answer to both questions above is "yes", then are these two the same person? If the answer to that last question is "no', then does anyone know the relationship between these two Shadracks? Looking back through my email archive, I see that some of this has been hashed around before, but I didn't actually find a definitive answer. Help, please, if you can :-) Peace, Part of the Tree, Greg
