    3. Hi, I have new information and have reason to believe that my ggg aunt, Isabella Eakins (d/o Joseph Eakins and Isabella Walcup Eakins), married a Lewis Wilkinson and later they moved to Lincoln Co and Giles Co., TN. They are on the 1850 and 1860 census of TN. Joseph and Isabella died in Rutherford Co, he in 1824 and she about 10 yrs later. They had 6 known children-- Sarah Eakins (md Samuel Biggerstaff), Isabella (md a Wilkinson), John, George (md Sarah "Sally" Melton), Samuel, and Thomas. The boys left NC during the early 1800's and Geo, John, and probably Thomas came to Henderderson Co., KY, about 1811. Samuel may have come to KY, but he possibly went to MO or AR or both. Can anyone help me with this Isabella? Thanks so much. 3. Hi Bill, I came across some records about John Ashworth marring Nancy Anne Wood in Tryon -Old Town NC in about 1763. Another was in Mecklenburg - Old Town NC same time. Any idea where this was found and where this Old Town was then? Joe McDonald ----- Original Message ----- From: "W. D. Floyd" <wdfloyd@rfci.net> To: <NCRUTHER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 02, 2002 10:25 AM Subject: [NCRUTHER-L] Rutherford Co., NC Marriage Licenses > In the Register of Deed Office for Rutherford Co., NC there are books with copies of the original marriage licenses for the time period of mid 1800's to about 1914 and I would think that they are basically for all the people in the old Marriage Register Books of which we already have photographed and have the index online. I have made photos of about a thousand of the marriage licenses and I have placed an index on my webpage at the following URL: > http://www.rfci.net/wdfloyd/rclicdex.html Since this is kind of labor intensive work and I am kind of on the lazy side I would appreciate it if everyone would take a look and see if this could be useful. If I had realized that this was basically the same people that were in the Registers I would have went this way first. There will be several thousand of these and will take quite a bit of time to complete. The licenses has most of the parents listed just as the do today. They are copies and many will need to be enhanced to read all the info. I have not enhanced any at all. Take a look and maybe ask me to send you one to look at and then let me know what you think about the project. I need your input. 2. I spoke too soon. I hadn't looked at the brides -- I am so excited. On my trip back to NC I couldn't find any information on Sarah Dyer to see if she's my Grandaunt. I went to the college to look up obits and looked for her death certificate at the court house. "Gee" I didn't think to look for her marriage license. And, her obit didn't mention parents. Please E-mail me the picture so I can "claim" her or "rule her out" Thank you thank you! Barbara Channell PS I even called her Grandson's widow and couldn't get any information.

    3. > >The given name, Lorenzo Dow, is so uncommon I find it rather strange >that my GGGrandfather, Lorenzo Dow Daves (1822-1920) is from that >same area of North Carolina, McDowell Co. <snip> Actually, the given names "Lorenzo Dow" are not at all uncommon. Lorenzo Dow was an itinerant Methodist preacher of the late 1700's and early 1800's. Many, many little boys were named after him--just as many little boys were named after Abraham Lincoln, Winfield Scott, William Henry Harrison, Francis Marion, Benjamin Franklin...the list goes on and on and I'll bet you have at least a few of those in your family background somewhere. I have them all! Though no Lorenzo Dows, as it happens. I do have a Louis Kossuth--and I had to do some digging to find out who he was! Here is a site for those of you with a Lorenzo Dow in the family tree: http://www.ourlittlecircle.com/lorenzo_dow_namesake.html Hope that helps clear up this mystery, so you can move on to the next one! *CERIDWEN* --

    2. Iris F Reily
    3. Hi Dean, This answer falls into the "for what it is worth" category. I would look in the records for the area for a Lorenzo DOW. My g-grandfather was a Hodge Rayburn YELTON. It always sounded like Hodge Rayburn was a name in its own right and sure enough with enough digging - There was a Hodge Rayburn who was a popular county sheriff before my g-gfather was born. That was in Mitchell Co. I believe, but the same sort of thing could hold true about anywhere. Interestingly, I also have a John "Landrum" YELTON and a "Columbus Mills" YELTON. I suspect that there was some prominent people with those names in the Rutherford Co. area. And, that our ancestors were named for them. So, for what it's worth, that is "my" theory. I hope this helps, Iris Iris F. Reily e-mail list YELTON-L@rootsweb.com Cheryl's web site http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~yelton/ ~Y E L T O N~anywhere~anytime~

    1. [NCRUTHER-L] The name Lorenzo Dow
    2. Just a comment on the name Lorenzo Dow which shows up in many families in NC. Lorenzo Dow was an early charismatic traveling Methodist evangelist. He was born in Connecticut in 1777 but traveled through out the early United States preaching and spreading the gospel of Methodism. Thousands of male children were named in honor of him throughout the country. You will also find this type of naming practice with some of the charasmatic ministers of the Baptist faith whcih was a powerful religious movement in the region of foothill, western NC and east Tennessee. Another common choice of namesakes were local politicians, war heroes, presidents, or well known historical figures, for example Columbus and Lafayette. A long with the use of family names, often families used the ancestral family surnames as given names. You can find a lot of information on Lorenzo Dow and the common use of his name and teh propensity of his namesakes in the early 19th century by doing a web search. www.google.com is a good one. Just type in Lorenzo Dow and hit search. You'll get hundreds of hits. Hope this helps explain the naming puzzle. Charmaine

    3. Lynn, The given name, Lorenzo Dow, is so uncommon I find it rather strange that my GGGrandfather, Lorenzo Dow Daves (1822-1920) is from that same area of North Carolina, McDowell Co. Your Lorenzo Dow Wesson, 1853-1894, is just one generation later than mine. I cannot find any connection in my data. Do you know of any. There were four known children of Lorenzo and Millie Taylor: Decatur Landrum, Columbus Mills, Martha, and Benjamine Taylor. Thank you for any information of a possible connection since this is my brick wall on the Daves Line.
