I have discovered the USGS topographical maps and believe that they can be a very exciting tool. I found a website - topozone.com where you can search for a particular geographic feature and then move in any direction to travel N-E-S-W. The maps can then be saved or printed out. Just wanted to share. Does anyone know anything about the Paris-Price cemetery? On the USGS map it appears to be on an unimproved road near Mount Valley off Green River Cove Road. I am also seeing a Bradley cemetery and a Patty cemetery. BTW: Is there anything wrong with this board? The traffic seems to have fallen to almost nothing lately. Sandra
Please, please help with a look out for the name JECTION. I am trying to trace exactly where land belonging to my ancestor, Freeman Jones, is located. It was originally in Rutherford County but is now located in Polk County. My problem is that I have not found the person he sold the land to in the Grantor's index. The person was David Jection. The name is quite clear on the original deed. It seems to me that I should be able to find where he disposed of the land by searching the Grantor's index but have found nothing. I have even searched the internet for any Jections and only found a Jection in the Tennessee Death Index -1910 by the name of Inter Jection. Sounds like a joke to me. Of course, that is better than Re Jection. The land was transferred from George Parris (his father-in-law)to Freeman in 1786 and is described as 100 acres on fork of Bright's Creek of Green River above Austin's entry, including Pulliam's improvement. The original grant by the State of North Carolina to George Paris described this land as being on the south fork of Bright's Creek. Does anyone know where the south fork of Bright's Creek is located? I find Bright's Creek on the USGS maps but nothing that says "south fork." Harms Creek is south of Bright's Creek but I'm not seeing an intervening fork. I greatly appreciate any help anyone can give in helping to find this land. Sandra Olsen
Hi, folks. Is there anyone on the list who considers himself or herself an expert on estate probate during the period of about 1845-1870 in Rutherford Co., NC? I have a group of estate papers dated 1868 that has confounded me for a long time, and some other evidence that leads me to a certain conclusion. I'd really like to run it by someone who knows more than I do to see if my hypothesis is feasible in terms of the laws of the day. If my explanation does fit in terms of the law, I'd also like some advice on how to find more evidence to support it. Any takers? Peace, Part of the Tree, Greg
Greg-- I would not consider myself an expert, but I am also very curious about your hypothesis and possible conclusion. Maybe you can share a bit of it with us. I have lots of land records on my family line in Rutherford/Cleveland (Bradley) to analyze, and it's hard stuff to do, so as a learner, I'd be pleased to learn from what you've already proposed/imagined/conjectured. Can you share more info with us about the specifics of the problem? Thanks! Some time ago I abstracted Rutherford Co. deeds that involved Lindseys. One of them was as follows: Deed Book 44, p 43. 3 Aug 1811, recorded 1 Jun 1840. James Lindsey to Abel Hurdin (or Hardin) for $30, land on headwaters of Little Hickory containing 40 acres. Bounded by Jonathan Hurdin (Hardin?) and Collins. I hope this helps. Margaret Lindsey Smith

Looking for information on my great grandparents John C. Robertson b. abt. 1857 in NC. d. in 1905 in Atlanta, Ga. and was sent back to Henrietta for burial. Parents were Walter Robertson and Rosanna ? Other than John sibling that I know of were Mary, George, William, Nancy, Sarah, and Thomas (this was taken from the 1860 & 1880 census) John C. Robertson m. Margaret N. Kizar on Jun. 10, 1875 in Rutherford Co., NC. From the marriage license application it list her parents as Haney (Henry or Harry very hard to read) Kizar and Burtris ? I am hoping that I don't have the names confused, could be Nancy for the mother and Burtris for the father. Does anyone have anything on this family? Patsy

Hello, I am looking for any researchers of any HARDIN/HARDENs in Rutherford County in the late 1700s into the 1800s. Where did your Hardins come from? I am looking into the possibilty that my 5th great grandmother Elizabeth "Betty" Nowlin, wife of David Nowlin Sr. could be a HARDIN. She was born in 1755 according to the Nowlin family Bible. She and David Nowlin Sr. appear to have a son named Hardin Nowlin who died in 1805 and also grandsons named Hardin. Any help on the HARDINs is greatly appreciated. The names in the 1782 special census were Benjamin, David, and Jonathan Hardin. Thank you, Melody Booker
I am seeking any additional information that you can provide about the parents/siblings of Pleasant Webb. Thanks a million. ================================================================ Pleasant (Plesent) WEBB was born about ca 1760-1765. His son, Elias, said that his father, Pleasant was born in Ireland (not substantiated). He died between 1830 and 1840 in Ohio, USA. Around 1800 Pleasant and family came in to the Ohio valley from Rutherford County, North Carolina. In 1803 (reported to be 45 years old) he was in Scioto County, Ohio. Pleasant was in GreenupCounty, Kentucky in 1820 and in Lawrence County, Ohio in 1830, he did not appear in the 1840 census, so it is believed he died between 1830-1840. Pleasant (Plesent) WEBB and Unknown had the following children: James WEBB (1786), Elias WEBB (1788), Thomas Hanley WEBB (1795), Aden WEBB (1797), Temperance WEBB (1799), William WEBB (1801), Margaret WEBB (1806), Sarah (Sally) WEBB (1809), and Baker WEBB (1811). The Rutherford County, NC, Land Grants list, by W. D. FLOYD, located at the following site, shows the following listings for Henry and Joseph CARELOCK: http://ns1.rfci.net/wdfloyd/grants.html Carelock, Henry 4-6 50 1797 Carelock, Joseph 4-6 51 1797 Furthermore, the Rutherford County, NC, Deed Index, Grantor-Grantee, 1779-1917, by W. D. FLOYD, located at the following site, shows the following listings for Henry and Joseph CARLOCK: http://ns1.rfci.net/wdfloyd/DeedDex.html Carlock, Henry & Joseph / Wear, Robert / Deed/12-14/245/1800 Carlock, Henry / McEntire, Alexander / Deed/20-21/98/1803 Carlock, Henry / Porter, David / Deed/10-11/38/1798 I am seeking further information with regard to these individuals, including their relationship to each other. Henry appears to be the Henry CURLOCK/KERLOCK found in Rutherford Co., NC, tax records, 1782; Mecklenburg Co., NC, court records, 1787; and the 1790 federal census for Rutherford Co., NC. The Mecklenburg Co., NC, connection leads me to believe that Henry could be a son of Frederick CARLOCK (s/o David), not mentioned among Frederick's children on page 437 of the book "History of the Carlock Family", by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929. Furthermore, the 1787 Mecklenburg Co., NC, court record where Henry was awarded money for the orphans of Christopher LANDESS suggests that Henry may be somehow related to the family of George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK, b. ca. 1779, NC, ancestor of the Illinois branch of the CEARLOCK (pronounced like "CARELOCK") family, who married Christopher LANDESS's granddaughter Rachel LANDERS, Oct. 11, 1805, Warren Co., KY. The above-mentioned Rutherford County, NC, Deed Index also includes the following listings for a Henry LANDERS. Is this the same Henry LANDERS who was the son of Christopher LANDESS, the father of Rachel LANDERS, and who migrated to Warren Co., KY? Landers, Henry / Green, William / Deed/M-Q/360/1796 Landers, Henry / Hamrick, James / Deed/M-Q/301/1796 Furthermore, page 437 of the book "History of the Carlock Family" lists a Joseph CARLOCK (s/o Lemuel, Hanchrist, David), "b. 1780, in southwestern Va.; emigrated to Tenn. with his uncle, Abraham Carlock, in 1803; later settled in Marion Co.; served War 1812; enlisted as Private Oct. 4, 1814, in Capt. Wm. Dooley's Company, McGrory's Regiment, West Tenn. Militia Inf.; dis. Jan. 4, 1814; wife unknown. Children: 1. James, born 1800; wife Elizabeth _____; wife b. 1810, farmer. 2. Joseph Taylor, b. Oct. 19, 1857, in Walker Co., Tenn.; m. Phoebe Halloway, April 7, 1820." Interestingly, this Joseph's son James also used the spelling "CARELOCK", and the book says that Joseph's son John migrated to Allen Co., KY, and was the father of George Washington CARLOCK (1812 - 1862) who died in Warren Co., KY, and whose son Luther Carel CARLOCK/CEARLOCK was the ancestor of the Oklahoma branch of the CEARLOCK family. At this point I do not have any evidence to connect this Joseph CARLOCK! with the Joseph CARLOCK/CARELOCK mentioned in the Rutherford Co., NC, 1797 land grant and 1800 deed. Any additional information with regard to the Henry and Joseph CARLOCK/CARELOCK mentioned in the Rutherford Co., NC, 1797 land grants and 1798, 1800, and 1803 deeds would be greatly appreciated. Hello Fellow Rutherfordites! This is a long one. If you're not interested in the Bradleys, in possible scandals, murder mysteries, or in the native american/Cherokee connection, feel free to move on to the next message! Thanks! I am a descendant of the brothers Thomas Bradley (born c. 1807) and Henry Bradley (born c. 1805), in Rutherford County, NC, both hammermen in the forge of Peter Fisher, and later Achilles Durham, in Rutherford County, NC, in the High Shoals, later Henrietta, area. My grandfather, John Bynum Bradley, born 1885, was the son of Esther Bradley (born 1857, daughter of Martha "Patsy" Bradley and possibly granddaughter of Thomas Bradley) and Benjamin Bradley (possibly son of Henry Bradley, though I am not sure). Our Bradleys are related to the various Bradley families descending from the Thomas and Henry lines--the Christopher Columbus Bradleys, Thomas Jefferson Hardin Bradleys, Blake Burnam Bradley, Baker Bradley, and so forth. This branch of the Bradley clan is very secretive about their past, since it is now known that they were at least partly native american, possibly Cherokee. The Reverend Christenberry Lee's 1895 reminiscences mentions that the Bradleys were not "of the Anglo-Saxon race," and that they had full-blood Cherokee ancestors. As well, most of our ancestors must have been dark-skinned enough to have prompted census takers to record their "race" as "free colored persons" in early census records, "mulatto" in the mid-1800s, and in 1880, "Indian." Add to this a possible scandal about my great grandfather, Benjamin (rumor has it that he may have been involved in a murder, either as a victim or worse), and it makes for pretty difficult searching. As for factual information about him, all I have is his name on a few death certificates of his children--my grandfather, great aunts and uncles--and beyond that, he seems not to exist in the census records. He and his wife Esther (I believe the! y were cousins) were married after the 1880 census, and their first child was my great uncle, William Cleastus Bradley, born 1882. My grandfather came along in 1885, his sister Mary Cornelia in 1887. Sometime between 1887 and 1891, the family moved, along with some of their cousins, to Cherokee County, SC, Morgan Township. My great aunt Martha Belle was born in Gaffney (or nearby) and my great uncle, Thomas Walton Bradley, was born in 1894, in Spartanburg (so says his death certificate). By 1900, Esther Bradley is a widow, and in 1910, she lives long enough to be enumerated on the census, and soon after, died, and is buried in the Clifton Cemetery in Clifton, South Carolina. I can find absolutely no trace of Benjamin Bradley. No burial, no record of death, no record of his marriage to Esther, nothing. And of course, the ill-fated 1890 census probably holds the golden information that I seek. If anyone has come across any public records (land transfers, wills, newspaper accounts, sheriff's records, anything) that refer to a Benjamin Bradley who was probably born around 1860 (plus or minus 10 years) and who likely died in that area of North or South Carolina between Rutherford/Cleveland and Cherokee/Spartanburg Counties, SC, or who may know anything from family legends, stories, ANYTHING, please let me know (if we're related, let's get in touch for sure). I have hit a huge brick wall with this one, and it is unbelievable to me that I can trace one line back to the 18th century and can barely break the surface of the 19th with this one individual. Many thanks in advance. Kit McChesney
