    1. [NCRUTHER-L] Rutherford Co Heritage Book Lookup Request-Reed, Reid
    2. My g-g-g-grandfather was John Reid, Jr., b. 1798 in Rutherford Co. He was married to Nancy Logan, dau of Andrew Logan. John's father was John Reed of Rutherford Co, who was married to Elizabeth Smart. There was an earlier John Reed in Rutherford who was married to Martha Little. I would like for someone to look through the Rutherford Co Heritage Book (or any other county history book) to see if any of these Reed/Reid families is written up. My main questions are: (1) Am I correct in my assumption that John Reid, Jr's father is the John Reid who married Elizabeth Smart? (2) What, if any, is the relationship between John Reed, wife of Elizabeth Smart, and the older John Reed who was married to Martha Little? (3) Who were all the children in these three families? Thanks, DAVID

    3. I am seeking any additional information that you can provide about the parents/siblings of Pleasant Webb. Thanks a million. ============================================================= Pleasant (Plesent) WEBB was born about ca 1760-1765. His son, Elias, said that his father, Pleasant was born in Ireland (not substantiated). He died between 1830 and 1840 in Ohio, USA. Around 1800 Pleasant and family came in to the Ohio valley from Rutherford County, North Carolina. In 1803 (reported to be 45 years old) he was at the Licks in Scioto County, Ohio. Pleasant was in Greenup County, Kentucky in 1820 and in Lawrence County, Ohio in 1830. He did not appear in the 1840 census, so it is believed he died between 1830-1840. Pleasant (Plesent) WEBB and Unknown had the following children: James WEBB (1786), Elias WEBB (1788), Thomas Hanley WEBB (1795), Aden WEBB (1797), Temperance WEBB (1799), William WEBB (1801), Margaret WEBB (1806), Sarah (Sally) WEBB (1809), and Baker WEBB (1811). Pleasant has been my road block for a long time. Maybe he named his first son, James, after himself. In that case his whole name may have been James Pleasant Webb. Maybe? Larry D. 2. My Great-grandmother ended up in Polk County, NC. She was Mary Ann (Polly) Splawn Dyer. My Childers were in Polk County also my Great-grandmother Louisa Childers married James Gibbs in Polk County, NC on 10 Mar 1874. They then moved to Spartanburg County (Campobello), SC [1880 census]. They were living next door to her parents John & Betti Childers. I know they had at least 3 children Louisa or Lou, Logan & Lizzie. I'm having a hard with the Childers, Splawns and the Dyers. I'm desperately doing research on my Pack ggrandparents in Polk County (Graham Splawn connection) and my Thomas ggrandparents in Transylvania County. Yeah, I've done this, and as long as you adhere to the search limitations, they are really good at doing the lookups. In these days of tight budgets, though, it takes them a period of weeks before they can get to the search. They notify you by email with the search results, which just describe what record(s) they found, if any. You print out that email, fill in the blanks, and return with a check if you want copies of the records. Hope this helps..... Peace, Part of the Tree, Greg

    1. [NCRUTHER-L] 1880 Mortality Schedule
    2. Is there a mortality schedule available for Rutherford County from the 1880 Census? In Pleasant Grove Methodist Cemetery there is a John H. Young buried near my great-great grandfather Samuel B. Young and I am curious if he may have been a brother as they are close in age and Samuel had a son whom he named John H. They are both buried near James and Susan Young, who are old enough to be their parents but I am not sure. John H. Young is listed as having been born March 22, 1860 and died March 31, 1880, his death date would have probably have placed him on a 1880 mortality schedule. Thanks for your help.

    3. James Stevens of the Speculation Land Company made a note in his memorandom book which is on file at the Wilson Library, UNC-Chapel Hill, NC, in the Southern Historical Collection. He was in the area by 1827 and the notation reads: "The widow Parker lives on the piece that Socket sold to Patrick Eves about South from Amos Walls mill 1/2 her son William has Enetered this place and will get a Grant - turn at Wall's mill" Can anyone tell me where this place would be today? I'm assuming it's somewhere near Wall's Baptist Church near the current day Cleveland County line. Enjoy the trek, Judy

    3. Rhita-- To get a feel for the area, you might want to order a USGS map so you can see where the folks lived. All of these townships are very close to each other, and all had mills where many of our forbears worked. One map that I've found helpful is the 30x60 Minute Quadrangle map, titled Gastonia, 1:100,000 scale topo map. This is not a quadrant map, but shows a larger area, and based on this map's coverage, you can then order the very detailed maps that show actual features on the landscape (like outbuildings and other structures). The number for this map is 35081-A1-TM-100. You can order USGS maps from a variety of retailers, all of them listed on the USGS Web site, at www.usgs.gov. You can select the area where you live and find a retailer of maps located near you, or find an online source and order there. Good luck! I am researching the family of Landrum Morgan MORRIS and his 1st wife, Eliza F. CANTRELL. The 1910 Census shows Landrum living with his second wife, Elizabeth S. Huffstetler, and his children, Lloyd (13 - born in NC), Macie (10 - born in NC) and Edna (6 -born in NC). They are living in Carolean, High Shoals Township. Eliza died between 1906 and 1910, as she was the legatee in her mother's will, Elizabeth Wall Cantrell LOVELACE, probated in the Rutherford County Probate Court in 1906 and she signed for her $1. Obituary says that Elizabeth was living near Paris Bridge, Spartanburg Co., SC when she died so I don't know why her will was probated in Rutherford County (there is no estate file in Spartanburg County). The children were born in NC. I have checked the 1900 Rutherford Co. census for the High Shoals Township and do not see this family. I cannot find Carolean on the may that I have. Does anyone know what location Carolean or High Shoals Township is near? Any suggestions as to surrounding townships that I can search the 1900 census so that I won't research all the townships just to find that the last township, last page, is the page that I need? And...does anyone recognize the above family(s)? Any help would be appreciated.
