    3. Linda, would love what you have that has any HANEY's connected! Another HANEY cousin, Paula SHULER has this line too! Have you exchanged info with her? When last I heard from her she was at schulergen@hotmail.com. I mailed her some copies of papers I had found at the Old Tryon HS in Forest City when I was there in June on the GOLDs including one that showed the cemetery stones of Daniel and Frances GOLD which had been written/contributed by a descendent, Joe GOLD. ALso some pages from the Sandy Run Settlement in Mooresboro showing both the HANEY and GOLD as members. I am trying to find more on Syntha/Cynthia's father Robert HANEY and his ancestors! Thank you for your offer! Will accept anything that help lead to earlier HANEY kin! 3. Dear Diana, I am descended from the FREEMANs, WALKERs and DICAS' of Rutherford. My biggest brick wall in Rutherford is proving the parents of Peter FREEMAN, b 1805. Joel FREEMAN and (according to Moultrie Co., IL history) his brother, Peter, arrived in Moultrie Co. together with families and Peter (my gg-grandfather,) went on to Missouri after a couple of years. Would you have any information on their parents? Also, I am assuming that Thomas B. Haney's wife, Celia WALKER, is the daughter of William WALKER and Jemima WAGGONER, whose family also moved to Moultrie Co. Is that right? Peter's wife, Artemincy, was Celia's aunt. Thanks for the posting. 3. I've added some of Mike Monroe's census data to my site - 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930. He's added genealogical notes - sure to be a super help to Rutherford Co. researchers. Click on 'census and other document transcriptions' Also, for Spartanburg -- I've added the will index to books A, B, and C, under the same heading... 1. [NCRUTHER-L] MCgaughey and Patterson
    2. Hi List This is my first posting. I am researching the McGaha family from Rutherford Co. Josiah McGaughe/Mcgaha b 1799 married Delilah Deen in 1823. Their first born, James A. McGaha is my ancestor. Josiah's father was named William McGaha. He would be born around 1775. They lived in Rutherford Co until the early 1800's when they moved to Gilmer Co GA which became Pickens Co. James A. migrated on to KY during the Civil War. The last sighting of William was in Gordon Co, GA on the 1860 census. His grandson Josiah, Jr was living with him. I think the William in question is the same William McGaughey who married Mimy Patterson in Rutherford Co in 1792. The 1820 Rutherford Co census has a Mimy McGaughey living alone as head of household so William either died ( and in that case, he is not my ancestor) or he ran off to GA. Does anyone on this list know anything about this McGaughey family? Any other Josiah researchers out there? I have tons of info on the family after they left NC but I sure would love some info during the NC years. Thanks Pam McGaha Holloway

    1. [NCRUTHER-L] Court Records
    2. I found this while looking at the court records today. I thought it might be of interest to someone: April 1796: Whereas application hath been made to the court to alter the name of Elias Biggerstaff illegimate son of Samuel McFadin to that of Elias McFadin is accordingly done and the same be voted in as full and ample manner as the act of assembly in such case made and provided will admit. ___________________________________________________________ Also looking for information on these individuals: January 1794: Betty Woodward made oath in open court that 21 head of cattle executed at the insistence of James Wells against David Nowland is her own proper right and that she never bartered or traded the said cattle to any person whatsoever, order therefore that the said property be released from under execution and be restored to the said B. Woodward April 1795: Benjamin Wilkinson proved a deed from Phillip Crowder and David Nowlin Woodward to William Crowder containing 140 acres in order to be registered. Dated January 12, 1795. _______________________________ What is the David NOWLIN/ Betty WOODWARD connection? In the Nowlin family Bible dating from 1805 David Nowlin Sr.'s wife is named Betty. BUT by 1794 she would have been Betty Nowlin, not Betty Woodward (their first child born 1775). Is this Betty Woodward David Nowlin Sr.'s wife using her maiden name, or another Betty? And who is David Nowlin Woodward? William Crowder is David Nowlin Sr's daughter Sarah's father in law, Phillip Crowder her uncle in law. This has gotten me a bit confused! Any insight is appreciated. Thanks, Melody

    3. from the NEW ERA, Shelby, NC, Friday, 4/12/1889 [microfilmed]: Part II [NOTE: This will be a long one! I am posting these as they tell where a number of folks were living in the time near the 1890 census.--- L.E.W.] CASAR NOTES Casar, April 6---Mr. George Cook and Miss Lydia Tillmon were married the other day at the residence of the bride's father. Mr. B.F. [Note: could be B.P.] Newton has moved into his new house out on the Whiteside road. Mr. A.D. Warlick has moved into his new house on the Shelby road. It is said that it is the finest house in this neighborhood. He is as good a farmer as you can find anywhere on Knob Creek. Mr. Ben Elmore has finished planting corn and has his fertilizer all out and ready to plant cotten. He has taken the lead this year. Mrs. J.A. Lackey, of Morganton, is visiting her husband at the commissary about a mile below Casar. It is rumored that there will be a depot built there when the railroad gets completed as it is a beautiful place, also being an outlet for Nos. 10, 11, and 8 as they all join right there. Mr. A.A. Peeler says he will furnish them the land free of cost. Mr. J. Brice, of Old Fort, has moved his family to Mr. Alexander Richard's to work at the house carpenter trade. Mr. J.T. Ramsey has returned from King's Mountain after two months sojourn. Mr. George Newton has gone to Reepsville on a flying visit. Mr. W.A. Crowder is visiting friends at Lattimore's. Mrs. Monroe Sain, of Reepsville, is visiting friends at Casar. RUTHERFORD RIPPLES (from the Rutherford Banner) We are informed that a small sized cyclone passed over the neighborhood of old Golden Grove Academy, three miles east of town, on Friday last, blew down the fences of Lawson Burge, colored, and took the roof off his house. No other damage was done. The following tax listers were appointed to list taxables for 1889: Rutherfordton, C. Barnett; Green Hill, T.F. Edwards; Union, W.L. Jones; Sulphur Springs, P.H. Nichols; Chimney Rock, J.M. Whiteside. Capt. W.L. Twitty informs us that in an old grave yard on Mrs. Camp's lands in Polk county is a grave, with a common granite headstone, with the inscription: "M. D. F., died Dec. 17th, 1789, .E71". He supposes the M.D.F. to be M.D. French, as he finds that name as the grantee of old patents recorded. The grave is within the inclosure of an old fort erected by the early settlers as a protection against Indians. The old ditch under the stockade can still be seen, and there are citizens living in the neighborhood who have seen the old timbers forming the stockade. The following is a list of magistrates appointed for Rutherford county by the last legislature: Rutherfordton, W.B. Wilson, D.R.Forbes, D.E. Huntley; Green Hill, A.P. Hill, Jonas Elliott; Union, Adolphus Brooks, William McKinney; Sulphur Springs, C.P. Tanner, I.N. Miller; High Shoals, John Goode, G.C. Harper; Colfax, T.L. Harrill, J.A. Cooper; Cool Springs, S.F. Geer; Morgan, T.C. Nanney, A. Higgins; Chimney Rock, P.F. Searey, F. Reynolds. (from the Forest City News) S.R. Hall, of Morgan township, killed a pig 14 months and 11 days old, which weighed 500 pounds net. Mr. I.N. Biggerstaff bought one ham that weighed 30 pounds and one side tipped the beam at 90 pounds. BELWOOD BRIEFS Belwood, April 10---Rev. and Mrs. A.G. Gantt retuned to their home at Mount Pleasant on Friday. Mr. Gantt is having his fine house at this place painted. A.M. Elliott, of Mount Pleasant, has the contract. The Sunday School at Kadish church reopened last Sunday with about fifty scholars present. Mr. J.B. Ivey is the superintendent and Mr. A.T. Gantt secretary. Mr. Ivey is a young man and a good live Sunday School worker. KING'S MOUNTAIN NOTES (from the King's Mountin Weekly) Mr. and Mrs. N.F. Waterson's youngest child died last week of pneumonia. A few more children are sick but improving. 1. [NCRUTHER-L] Seth Thomas and Sallie Dobbins Green
    2. Greg Lovelace
    3. Hi, folks. I just spent a couple days in Rutherford Co., NC at the courthouse in an effort to trace land of my ggrandfather George Logan Lovelace and his wife Mary Jane Green Lovelace. I am trying to find the present-day location of the land by searching and platting deeds. It was thought that a parcel once owned by Cicero and Della Lovelace Jones (the granddaughter of George Logan) out on Shires Road in the Colfax section was the land, but I found by tracing the deeds back from the present day that it was not. However, I did find a pair of deeds constituting a January 1906 land trade between George and Mary Jane and another couple, Luther A. and Mattie Padgett of Cleveland Co. George gave up three parcels of property on Sandy Run waters for a parcel on the waters of Roberson's Creek, which I assume is the parcel over at the corner of Sunshine Hwy. and DePriest Road near my father's home place. I know that George owned land there at that crossroads. I was able to trace two of the parcels further down through time, as they were combined into one and described in a series of 3 deeds containing the phrase "including the house where George Lovelace lived" or something to that effect. The Padgetts sold it to J. B. Hamrick on 27 Mar 1906. J. B. Hamrick sold the same parcel to E. A. Hamrick on 29 Jul 1907. E. A. Hamrick and wife S. L. Hamrick sold the parcel on 4 Dec 1907 to S. T. Green of Rutherford Co. I found no record through about 1950 of S. T. Green selling the property, and I didn't have time to look any further. The Grantor Indexes in the deed room go up through 1938 or 1939, and there are several entries for S. T. and Sallie Green(e), but none of them are in Colfax Twp. on Sandy Run. I did check for S. T. Green in the death index, and there is a 1950 death certificate for one Seth Thomas Green of Cool Springs Twp., the son of Johniebly and Mandy Hamrick Green, b. 9 Aug 1877 in Rutherford Co., died 7 Jun 1950. There is also a marriage listed in the marriage registers for S. T. Green, age 21, to Sallie Dobbins, age 18, on Aug 9, 1899. It's possible that this S. T. and Sallie are the ones who own(ed) the land that George lived on. I am posting this to both the Green and the Rutherford Co., NC lists in hopes that someone will recognize some of the parties in these land transactions, especially the S. T. and Sallie Green. Anybody out there got these folks? Peace, Part of the Tree, Greg --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses by Declude Virus]

These can be accessed at my website located at http://www.rfci.net/wdfloyd What I am trying to explain to everyone is it is impossible for me to except lists of file numbers to send the photos. I use the internet very little other than the webpage and E-mail and therefore I can't warrant the cost of high speed internet for all my free stuff. I understand how impatient one can get when they find a source of information that helps their research. They want it all right now. I am that way also. By using a phone modem for the internet connection it takes as long for a half meg photo to leave my PC as it does for you to receive it with a modem. If I was to try to fill several lists of photo file numbers I could put hours at the PC. What seems to work very well for me and some of the folks using the photos is to send for ONE and when ! they receive it to send for another. This kind of spreads it out over time. I check the mail quite often but I just have to have a little time for other things and this causes the requests to kind of bunch up. I receive quite a bit of E-mail and I just can't keep all the mail with lists of requests and then send at my convenience so I will send one request and then you will have to re-submit the next request. Keep one thing in mind, This Is All Free Of Charge and I intend to keep it that way. I am not trying to offend or accuse anyone. I am just trying to make it work for us all. All Thank God For Another Beautiful Day, Bill

She was daughgter of Andrew Aaron McEntire and Ellender ? Wallis. Never have found who the unk Thompson was. They were orginally buried at Old Hopewell Cemetery in Rutherford County but moved to Beulah Methodist Cemetery by Forest Wolfe around 1985 or so. PS Am looking for info also on who the Oates was that my 2xgreatgrandfather William Cathey Wolfe and wife bought part of the "Oates" land in 1874 and moved his family into the Old Oates House on Muddy Fork Creek, a branch of Buffalo Creek. He ( Forest Wolfe) believed there to be about 700 acres in that tract. I have a pic of Cathey Wolfe and his wife Phoebe Lee and daughter Asena Era Wolfe taken in front of what I believe to be that house. This info came from the late Forest Wolfe of Cleveland Cty.

    1. [NCRUTHER-L] WEBB, Jonathan
    2. DIANA QUINONES
    3. Is anyone researching WEBB lines? I am looking for the parents of Nancy WEBB who married Robert HANEY in 12/28/1821 in Rutherford Co. Robert, b 7/30/1792, was son of Robert Haney Sr and Elisabeth Bailey. They lived in Webb's creek area, and are my gr4grandparents; Robert Jr and Nancy are my gr3. A note from Jeff Martin@fairfield.com had said that William Webb, Sr. (1745-1788) had at least two sons, William Jr. and Jonathan. He named children of William Webb Jr as a son named Jonathan and a daughter named Nancy. This Nancy was b. c1785 and married Pleasant Earl. So maybe his other son, Jonathan, is my Nancy's father! On the 1810 Census Jonathan WEBB had a female under age 10 in his Census household. Does anyone know who she was? or who he was married to? Based on Census in 1860, Nancy WEBB HANEY was age 54, thus would be born abt 1806. The marriage bond for Robert and Nancy shows this: Bride: Nancy Webb Groom: Robert Haney Bond Date: 28 Dec 1821 County: Rutherford Record #: 01 127 Bondsman: Jonathan Webb Witness: Alfred Webb, Justice of the Peace Bond #: 000133925 It seems likely that Jonathan is her father? Can anyone help on this WEBB family? Thanks Diana in AL

    1. [NCRUTHER-L] [NCCLEVEL-L; NCRUTHER-L] Bradley, Bradly Family [LONG}
    2. Kit McChesney
    3. Dear Clevelanders and Rutherfordites-- First, let me say that this is a long posting, and I apologize in advance for its length. I am at a particularly difficult place in my research, and I need to see if anyone can shed some light on some particularly thorny problems I've run across. If you are interested, please bear with me--I'll try to keep the story interesting--and if you aren't, please feel free to use your delete key. I have been researching my family's history--BRADLEY, BRADLY--for many years, and they are an especially difficult bunch to learn much about, as they seem to have been extremely adept at keeping their identity and origins a secret. And probably for good reason, since in the 19th century being a "free colored person," "mulatto," or "Indian" (members of the family were designated as such in the census records from 1830 through 1880) was a most difficult life to lead in the South. Family legend, what little of it I have been able to unveil and confirm in official records, says that my ancestors were indeed native American. Given the area of North Carolina where we are from--first Rutherford, near the High Shoals/Henrietta area, and later Cleveland, after the formation of the Cleveland County--we have assumed that we are Cherokee, but the specific tribal relationship is less important to me than just understanding where our people came from, and all the reasons they were so inte! nt on keeping their history a secret. That said, what I know is this: my great-grandmother's generation, as well as her children's generation--she was born in 1857) is identified as "Indian" on the 1880 census. In prior years, the same families were listed as "mulatto" (there was no designation on earlier census records for "Indian") and in 1830, as "free colored persons." Winney Bradley, who was shown on the 1830 census, was listed this way. She was a relative of some of my great-grandmoter's ancestors, Thomas and Henry Bradley, both hammermen in the forge of High Shoals Iron Works, which was located at the site where Henrietta #1 was later located. Thomas and Henry are both my ancestors, as I believe that some of their children intermarried, as was common in those days. I think my great-grandmother (Esther) and great-grandfather (Benjamin) were probably first or second cousins. They probably married sometime in late 1880 or early 1881. My grandfather, born in 1885, and his four siblings, were the children of Esther Bradley (her maiden name) and Benjamin Bradley. I have been unable to locate a single census listing showing Benjamin, who would have had to be of marriageable age in 1881 or so (Esther is shown as single in 1880, but my great-uncle was born in 1882). As we know, there are no census records for 1890, so my Bradley family is invisible between 1880 and 1900, when I find them in Cherokee County, South Carolina, among other Bradley relatives, with my grandfather and his siblings living with their widowed mother, Esther. Esther died in 1910, and is buried in the cemetery in Clifton, SC. The children worked in cotton mills in Ware Shoals and other locations before moving on to Atlanta around 1914. All the siblings moved to Atlanta--my grandfather and his wife, my grandmother, their children, and his sisters and two brothers. Other Bradley relatives, cousins of my grandfather and his siblings, remained in North Carolina and some of those who had lived across the border in South Carolina later moved back to North Carolina. There was little or infrequent connection or visiting between the two branches of the family--the Atlanta branch which is my family, and the other branches who lived in Rutherford and Cleveland, and whose descendants probably still do live in the area. My mother, who was born in 1920, and some of her siblings, were always curious about their origins, and asked their father and/or his siblings, primarily and aunt who was very close to them, where they came from. She would always say, "You don't want to know." This line was repeated over and over throughout the years. At one time, she actually revealed, when her own son asked her, "Mother, are we Indians?" that indeed we were, but never to ask about it again. I have connected with a few descendants of the Henry Bradley side of my family in the past five or so years, and their stories are similar. One descendant, a relative of the wife of a Bradley, who was herself "Indian," used to ask her mother the same questions my mother asked her father and aunts and uncles, and the response was the same. "You don't want to know." I know from this Bradley descendant that as late as the 1920s, one of her aunts was turned away from the Harris School by those who did not want her there. "You are an Indian," they told her, "and you can't go to school here." Apparently this branch of the family was very careful not to reveal their heritage for fear that they would lose title to the land they owned. Even as late as 1996, an elder of the family who was about 95 or so, insisted on keeping quiet about the family's history, and she managed to take these secrets with her when she passed away. I assume that my grandfather and his siblings left North Carolina to work in the mills in South Carolina and later Georgia in part due to discrimination they must have faced there, for if as late as the 1920s a child was turned away from school in the Rutherford area for being "Indian," then in 1890 or 1895, my ancestors must have faced as difficult or more difficult a situation. Also, there was some rumor in my family that there is a murder in our history, of whom or by whose hand I have no idea. So that is a scandal that has been covered up pretty well, whatever the truth of the story, and has become part of the reason none of mine or my mother's generation has been able to uncover anything about our history. I have tried to find marriage records of Esther and Benjamin Bradley in North Carolina and South Carolina for the years they would have married, in searches of the many online resources we have available to us, as well as through letters to every courthouse in North Carolina and the most likely counties in South Carolina (Cherokee and Spartanburg). Nothing turns up. There are no coroner's records showing a violent death in South Carolina, where my great-grandfather probably died between 1894 and 1900. Though I have a burial location for Esther Bradley, and have visited her grave in Clifton, SC, I have been unable to find the place of burial for my great-grandfather. He seems never to have existed. Even census records do not show him. And the fact that Esther and Benjamin have the same last name hasn't helped. The somewhat well-known narrative, by Rev. Christenberry Lee, published in the Forest City Ledger in 1895, has confirmed much information that was only known in whispers and legend in my family. He refers to my ancestors Tom and Hal Bradly [sic], hammermen in the forge at High Shoals, both sons of Tom Bradly, Sr., who was also a hammerman in Peter Fisher's original forge, the forge later bought by Reuben Cooper, and soon sold to Achillis Durham. Lee also notes that "it was generally understood that the Bradly family was not of the Anglo-Saxon race," and that "old Aunt Winney" bore "marks" that were striking in their resemblance to the "Indian race," and that "the ancestors of the Bradly family claimed to be full-blooded Indians." Amazing material, really. Old Aunt Winney is the same who is listed in the 1830 census, and who is no longer living in 1840 because, according to Lee's narrative, she committed suicide. Apparently the home where this occurred was a place children we! re reluctant to pass as they were frightened by the event that took place there. I recently uncovered some snippets of this narrative, and was helped along with a full typescript of the material provided by a descendant of Achillis Durham, the owner of the High Shoals Iron Works. So I am asking if anyone who is researching Bradley or Bradley, or who is related to this branch of the family, or who may have come across newspaper articles, land records, or any records even mentioning anything about the Bradleys, can share what they know with me, or can point me to someone who is involved in research on this family. I am trying to find out what happened to my great-grandfather, if indeed he was named Benjamin, if there was scandal in the family, if he was killed, or killed someone, or what exactly happened. I can only speculate at this point about all the details I don't know, and I just know that someone out there must know something that I don't! Any help appreciated, and all moral support gratefully acknowledged! Thanks! Kit McChesney (Researching Bradley, Bradly, and especially those Bradley folks who are listed as "free colored persons" in the 1830 census, as "mulatto" in the 1840, 1850, 1860, and 1870 census records, and as "Indian" in 1880, in the Rutherford/Cleveland areas).
