    1. [NCRUTHER-L] Jefferson and Foster Family
    2. Rebecca Bannister
    3. Good morning, I am new to this new board. My 4th great-grandfather, Bazil (Bozzle, Basil) Jefferson and his brother Thomas J. Jefferson were born in Amelia County, Virginia and then migrated to Rutherford County. Thomas J. later moved west and Bazil moved to Forsyth County, Georgia. Bazil's son, Thomas E. Jefferson was my 3rd great-grandfather. He married Mary Frances Foster. She was born November 16, 1823 in either North Carolina or South Carolina (census records are contradictory on this fact). She was living in Rutherford County at the time of their marriage (September 10, 1844). I am hoping to find Mary Frances' parents. In 1860, I found two Fosters in the Rutherford County census - an Edmon, age 34 and a Fendal age 54. I don't have any idea of these men are related to Frances or not - but I was hoping someone on the list might be aware of who they were. Thomas and Frances moved to Cherokee County, Georgia in 1860 with their three daughters, Mary Elizabeth, Margaret Ann and Eliza Jane. Eliza Jane was my 2nd great-grandmother. Frances Foster Jefferson died October 21, 1901 and is buried in Cherokee County, Georgia. Her husband was killed at the Battle of Vicksburg in 1864. She never remarried and lived by herself after her daughters married. Rebecca Bannister rbannister@comcast.net Rutherford County Surnames: Jefferson, Foster, Brady, Tanner

Thanks a million. ============================================================= Pleasant (Plesent) WEBB was born about ca 1760-1765. His son, Elias, said that his father, Pleasant was born in Ireland (not substantiated). He died between 1830 and 1840 in Ohio, USA. Around 1800 Pleasant and family came in to the Ohio valley from Rutherford County, North Carolina . In 1803 (reported to be 45 years old) he was at the Licks in Scioto County, Ohio. Pleasant was in GreenupCounty, Kentucky in 1820 and in Lawrence County, Ohio in 1830. He did not appear in the 1840 census, so it is believed he died between 1830-1840. Pleasant (Plesent) WEBB and Unknown had the following children: James WEBB (1786), Elias WEBB (1788), Thomas Hanley WEBB (1795), Aden WEBB (1797), Temperance WEBB (1799), William WEBB (1801), Margaret WEBB (1806), Sarah (Sally) WEBB (1809), and Baker WEBB (1811). 3. Kit, I just looked at Ancestry's listing of schedules for the Rutherford Co. 1850 Federal census. They listed the following: Fox Squirel District, High Shoal District, Polk District, Rutherfordton, Slave Schedules and Whitesides Settlement. I haven't done any work with these at all, however, since my ancestors had left NC nearly 50 years earlier to head south and west. 3. Melody, the Rutherford Co. Deed Books contain the following (abstracted by me): "Deed Book 25, pp 76-77. 12 Oct 1808, recorded 2 Aug 1809. "Wm. Carson, Esq., high sheriff of the County of Rutherford and state of North Carolina" to Henry Long. "an Execution issuing from the county court of Rutherford against Micajah and Carlton Lindsey for the sum of fourteen pounds twelve shillings three pence which sd. sum was recovered by Wm. Henderson of the sd. Micajah and Carlton Lindsey as on record may appear." Land (no goods or chattels to be found) sold on Alstons Creek of Green River, bounded by David Millar, Wm.Carson. 3. Kit, This is what Ancestry says about the slave schedules: SLAVE SCHEDULES At the 1850 and 1860 censuses, an enumeration of slaves was performed. Full names were rarely recorded, yet each slave was numbered. Organized by owner, each person was listed with age, sex and color. With these details, along with other facts gathered outside the schedule, it is possible to located a specific person without actually finding their name. And these are the collections they have for NC: This collection contains the following indexes: 1790 Federal Census Index; 1800 Federal Census Index; 1810 Federal Census Index; 1812-14 Muster Rolls; 1820 Federal Census Index; 1830 Federal Census Index; 1840 Federal Census Index; 1840 Pensioners List; 1850 Federal Census Index; 1860 Federal Census Index; 1870 Federal Census Index; 1890 Veterans Schedule; Early Census Index. But it doesn't mention any slave schedule! There is the US Mortality Schedule but not a separate named file for a slave schedule. Was it kept separate from the 1850 and 1860CR? Not all of 1860 has been imaged. The 1850 images are indexed for all states. 3. Dear All-- Has anyone had an opportunity to do any research using the slave schedules for our counties for 1850 and 1860? What I wonder is if Ancestry.com has images of the slave schedules for those years. I haven't subscribed in a while, and wanted to know before I made the commitment. Otherwise, I can visit the National Archives in Denver (I'm in Colorado), but it would be much easier if I could access online! Any info appreciated, as well as any info in using these schedules in general. Also, in terms of good books to read that feature genealogy research, I'd recommend two of late: Edward Jones' book The Known World (amazing book, reviewed on NPR this morning) and The Clearing, by Tim Gautreaux (about Louisiana ... based on family history research). Also, Pearl's Secret, by Neil Henry. They're all fabulous reads. Thanks in advance! 1. [NCRUTHER-L] PLEAS and QUARTER SESSIONS: Partial Index
    2. This is an index of the names in notes I have made while looking at the Pleas and Quarter Sessions of Rutherford County NC, 1796-1811. This is not a complete index of the records, only those who may be connected to my Rutherford County NC families. I am trying to gauge the interest in the court records as I am considering a transcripton, or partial transcription of the court records. If you see your ancestor in this list, please let me know. If I have the details in my notes, I will be glad to share them. Please limit your requests to one ancestor. Thank you!
