    3. --------- Forwarded message ---------- If some of you are interested in seeing some original state atlases..there are some at www.genealogyatlas.com . So far they have them for 1814, 1845 and about 60% of 1795. I guess they will be putting other years up eventually. Use the PDF format because you can zoom in and out and print them easily from your computer I printed two maps out but they could be slow to load if you have a dial up. But they are worth the wait. 1. Info
    2. Hello Everyone, I have the complete surname index of children bound out in the court of pleas and quarter sessions for Rutherford County 1799-1817 now on my website. I will keep the list there for another week or so. I also have obtained copies of the deed books from 1779-1843. I would like the opinion of those of you who would be so kind. Would you prefer for me to continue to post information (my free info page on my website) from the court records (Now starting in 1818) or would you like for me to start posting information from the deed books? If I do post from the deed books, it will be abstractions (grantor, grantee, date, location, neighbors, witnesses). Your input is appreciated. 1. Wilkins, McEntire, Royster Deeds
    2. Hello Everyone, In 1822 William W. McEntire sold land on First Little Broad River to George Royster. This land was on Joseph Hearns line. Witnesses to the deed were John Hendrick and Larson C. Moore. In 1829 George Royster sold land on First Broad River to Thomas Wilkins Sr. This land was on Aaron Ross's line. Witnesses to the deed were George Hendrick and C.H. Royster. Does anyone know anything about the Wilkins, McEntire or Roysters mentioned? Which William McEntire is this? My 4th great grandfather was Thomas Wilkinson and his son in law was William McEntire. I thought that it was interesting that a Wilkins and McEntire both had land dealings with George Royster. Have been wondering if the "on" could have been left off of Thomas Wilkinson's name. Thanks, Melody Booker

    1. Deed
    2. Hello Everyone, While looking at deeds today I found that my 4th great uncle David Nowlin Jr. had bought land from William W. Kilpatrick in 1806. I don't know if anyone is researching William W. Kilpatrick, but I thought I would pass on that he is listed as William Wilson Kilpatrick. He sold 105 acres on First Broad River adjoining Robert Crowder and William Garner. Also, today I added more names to the index of children bound out in the pleas and quarter sessions on my website. It is close to being complete. Thanks, Melody Booker _http://www.insearchofancestors.com_ (http://www.insearchofancestors.com)

    1. New Data
    2. Hello Everyone, I wanted to let everyone know about my new project. While I have been indexing the court records of Rutherford County (1799-1817 complete), I have been making a separate list of children who were bound out in the court records. Over the next two weeks I will begin to put a surname index of the children and who they were bound out to on my website. I hope to begin in the next couple of days. I hope this information will be useful to those who might find familiar names there. Thanks, Melody Booker _http://www.insearchofancestors.com_ (http://www.insearchofancestors.com)

    1. HARRIS DNA Testing
    2. I am looking for male HARRIS descendants that descend from HARRIS males living in Western North Carolina in the late 1700s and early 1800s who may be willing to participate in the HARRIS DNA Testing project. This project was started by HARRIS descendants from HARRISes that were in Virginia but it has expanded to other locations and more samples are needed to confirm different lines of HARRIS families. DNA is one way to help sort out how the many HARRIS families are connected. With DNA testing the Y DNA is compared. My husband descends from James HARRIS who was in Rutherford County before 1800. James is believed to have come from Virginia but his parentage is not confirmed. Since my husband is not a HARRIS male his DNA is not helpful for the HARRIS DNA Project. The Y-DNA testing must be through the male line with no breaks. This DNA test is very simple -- just a sample of saliva and it can be of so much value to serious genealogists. Two links are provided below for more information. If you are a HARRIS male descendant or know of one please check this out. I would love to find more cousins to help sort this out. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~harrisdna/ http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=Q41837&special=true There are numerous other surname projects as well that may be of help to other researchers. Happy Hunting. Connie Harris Bradshaw (My own Harris lineage -- from NJ -- is included in the DNA Testing)

    1. Orphans
    2. Margaret Smith
    3. Melody, I don't know what the laws were in NC, but I have a Georgia ancestor who, along with his siblings, was bound out even though his mother was still alive. His father died, not leaving enough of an estate to support them, and the mother remarried. The records are for the Orphan Court. It is possible that the children were not hers, of course, but those of an earlier wife... Margaret Lindsey Smith

    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. Hi, My understanding is that in NC children whose fathers were dead/deserted were often termed Orphans, even when the mother was still alive. They could then be called wards of the state for purposes of support. Betty Pace From: MellyBkr@aol.com To: NCRUTHER-L@rootsweb.com Date: Sat, 7 Aug 2004 21:09:45 EDT Subject: Court records Hello, I am interested in this particular case in the court records: July 1812: The court ordered that the sheriff bring and deliver into next court Sally Wilkerson the daughter of Mary Wilkerson in order to be bound. October 1812 On motion ordered that Sarah Wilkerson aged 12 years orphan of Polly Wilkerson be bound to Margaret McMurry until she attain the age of eighteen... __________________________ What I am trying to figure out is: Were Sarah/Sally's parents alive at the time of her bounding out? When it says she is the orphan of Polly Wilkerson, is it because Polly is dead or her Sarah's father is dead? What made a child an orphan, losing a father or both parents? No mention of her father can be found in the court records. Thanks for an insight. Melody
