    3. RESTRICTING OUR ACCESS TO RECORDS. The U.S. House of Representatives is considering a bill, House Resolution 10 (H.R. 10), which seeks to restrict access to birth certificates. David Rencher, chairman of the Record Access and Preservation Committee, a joint committee of the Hello, fellow genealogists of Rutherford! Just in case you-all didn't see the info below on the main RootsWeb's recent mailing, please note -- and act! If Hastert's bill succeeds the way it is now, it will make it impossible for those of us doing genealogy to get birth records for ancestors at all! At the very least, the amendment is needed to keep this from happening. Read about it, then go to the website to locate your person in congress, and write or phone or email to let your voice be heard. Keeping us from getting birth records of ancestors of more than 100 years ago is a silly and stupid idea! Thanks for making your voice heard. Jeaneane Williams (Copied directly from RootsWeb's recent mailing) National Genealogical Society and Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS), has sent a letter to the bill's sponsor, Congressman J. Dennis Hastert, recommending an amendment to the bill that make a distinction between certified and non-certified copies and excludes records more than 100 years old. A copy of the letter is available on the FGS site at: http://www.fgs.org/rpa/formalactions.htm. To view this bill, go to http://thomas.loc.gov/ Enter HR10 in the search box for "Bill Number." Concerned U.S. family historians who wish to contact their congressional representative can go to: http://www.house.gov/ and enter their zip code. Follow the link to the representative's website to obtain his/her contact information.

There are some listed under the tab County Resources on Rutherford County's NCgenweb page at http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Encruther/ In a message dated 10/21/2004 7:03:20 AM Eastern Standard Time, NCRUTHER-D-request@rootsweb.com writes: Date: Wed, 20 Oct 2004 17:13:12 -0500 From: "Carolyn Heimann" <cheimann@charter.net> To: NCRUTHER-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <002701c4b6f1$fd68e4a0$7b01a8c0@Home> Subject: early Rutherford Co. records Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Hello, I am fairly new to the list and was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of websites that have early records in Rutherford Co. prior to 1850. Is there a historical or genealogical society for the county that might have books for sale and does anyone know if a county history book has been published. 2. Found this today: Feb. 1796 Phillip Crowder and David Nowlin Woodward to William Crowder of McLingburgh County VA 140 acres Thomas White's corner, Runnels old line, Woodward's corner, Robert Crowder's line, Philip Moore's line, Runnel's old line, Philip's line. Witnesses: Benjamin Wilkinson, Israel Riggs. Anyone researching the Crowders? Woodwards? Nowlins? I know all of these families were interrelated in Rutherford County, did they know each other prior? Did they come from Mecklenburg County VA? Thanks, Melody Booker

    2. I have been reading all these postings back and forth. I think we have had enough and its time to move on and talk about our research and work on that. Pay for information and services seems to be a part of genealogy whether its to a state agency or a private individual and while get information for free is great. We need not come down upon people who wish to get some compensation for there hardwork. IF you do not want to use a service then dont get what information you can and move on. But don't take a resource away from someone who may want to use it. Well thats my 2 cents plus some. To all those who make any information availble via the internet THANK YOU for hardwork. Jennifer

    2. Melody, my reply will but short, but let me tell you not to let this upset you and continue your good work. I went through the same thing some years back. So I know what you must be feeling now. Hang in there for us and don't give up.. Your work is great. I emailed Melody myself for help and was not offended by her wanting to charge for the services I ask for. This stuff takes her time, and (EVEN) money some times. She is within her guidelines of this news letter. Nancy

    1. Woodward Deed
    2. Hello Everyone, While looking thru the deed books I found something that is quite interesting: Book 7-9 p.13 Grant State of NC to David Nowlin Woodward December 18, 1797 250 acres on Sampson's Branch Crowder's line, White's line My 5th great grandfather was David Nowlin Sr. His wife is only known as Betty, but I believe her maiden name was Woodward (working to prove that). So who is this David Nowlin Woodward? A son of one of the Peter Woodwards who were in Rutherford at the time (father and son?)? Is the Crowder William Crowder? William's son Jarrell married David Nowlin Sr.'s daughter Sarah. Who is the White? There are several who lived around the Nowlins: Peter, Jeremiah, Thomas. Lastly, does anyone know where Sampson's Branch is? I think it must be off of First Broad River, where the Nowlins were. I cannot find it in my current atlas. Thanks, Melody Booker

    3. Hi, This is a reply I sent someone else awhile back that was in regard to Melody's posts to the mail list. I have to uphold her write to post the same as I do anyone else as long as she remains within the guidlines delinated by Rootsweb. As to however anyone signs their mail as...that too is not outside the guidlines if you want to say you are a professional researcher or genealogist. This was my reply at that time and it still fits here........ "I see nowhere in the message to the list any mention of a fee. I went to the website and the information that their email message mentions is free. Look at the top of the website and you will see a link that says "Free Info". I am sorry that you are offended but since the sender does not ask for money or allude to a "For Fee" product she is within her right to post a notice to the list stating she has records that are free on her website. She never mentioned or asked for a fee on the list. My advice is to accept her free info "as is". So, the bottom line is that as long as you don't ask for money on the mail list, what you put on your personal website is up to you. Rootsweb cannot tell you that you can't offer free information and for sale information on your personal sites. No one has to visit her site if they feel offended by the mixed content. Also, if anyone has saved a post from anyone that I have missed that asks for money, then please forward it to me. I am not going to go back and read all the posts again. I look at each one as they come in and nothing "triggered" any alarms that I might need to gently remind someone they are committing a "no no". Debbie Fowler list admin

    3. Melly, Some of us appreciate you and all you do. Others however, seem to want something for nothing. My Father always said worthwhile things are never free. I for one hope you will not allow this to discourage you in a job well done. You deserve to be paid for what you have done. If you don't wish to partake of her items for sale them go to N.C. and do your own research. With the price of gas and motel rooms it will be very inexpensive.(Sarcastic smile) Looking for information on James Simmons and his daughter Christian Simmons and William Morris. Christian(Christianna) married in 1793 in Amherst . The marriage certificate says William Morris of Bedford VA . James Simmons whose wife was Mary Waters died in High Shoals , Rutherford NC Feb 9, 1823. I would appreciate any help on William Morris family. 3. I continue to be amazed at the way people's minds work! I, for one, am grateful for whatever even MINOR tidbits Melly can provide free that I cannot get elsewhere. She has provided free information in the past over this site and I've seen nobody complain. Now that she is offering -- still -- free information, but with a caveat that she can also offer other specific information for a fee, all of a sudden people are coming out of the woodwork to complain. I wonder that her comment below is so gracious. Yes, indeed, Bill Floyd's efforts for Rutherford County have been tremendous. I think he's done a wonderful job, and I am most appreciative of the help I've received from his posting's over this and other locations. He also lives in the area, as I understand it, and, though he has been doing this work for many years and much of it, no doubt, out of his own pocket, he is now retired. The fact that he continues to work is generous, and we should all be grateful. Melly, on the other hands, sounds like a young mother and wife who is trying to provide several things at once: some income for her family; some free help to those who avail themselves of it; and an offer for work for pay for additional research for individuals who are willing and able to pay. The fact that RootsWeb has found no problem with this kind of offer in the past means to me that Melly is doing nothing wrong -- and that she is, in fact, rendering a terrific service which, I notice, no one else has come forward to offer, free or otherwise. I, for one, have found her free posts on her website to be quite helpful. As a disabled person who lives far away from the place where most of my ancestors were born, lived and died, I have been thrilled to see some familiar names on her free post -- names that could possibly give me some extra piece of information that will help in my search for family. Once again, I think of some of the letters and comments I've read over the Rootsweb posts of the past from the Home Site -- the questions of who owns the information, the questions and problems of people posting erroneous information to sites and never correcting it, the questions of how to deal with people who don't want to pass their information on and share it. I think Melly is to be commended that she was trying to get correct information out -- no matter how small an amount it was -- to people she didn't even know and wasn't even related to -- in an effort to provide a minor source on a regular basis. I hope she will not let the sour notes sounded in this space keep her from her initial goal. I, for one, will continue to visit her website on a regular basis to see what tidbits she's found -- and I'll pass the word on to other cousins and researchers who may not have seen it. AND, if I come across a windfall or minor inheritance or a few extra dollars some fine day, I may even ask for her help -- she sounds like someone who knows what she's doing! Thanks, Melly, and thanks to all of you out there who genuinely have altruistic interests -- not just your own selfish interests, but the broader world of interests in the human race and the fascinating search for universal ancestry as you go about your daily tasks and hobbies. The starting of a website and putting information on CD for sale is a new venture for me. It began when I started going through the court records looking for my own family in Rutherford County. I thought it would be beneficial for folks to have an index, since the North Carolina Archives will not do a look up unless you know the specific part of the court records you want them to look up. To start doing that, I purchased a microfilm machine and started ordering films from the archives. I do not live in North Carolina where I can go to the court house or archives. At this point, I have purchased 18 films, which has not been inexpensive. I have spent the last 10 months indexing the court records when I have had time (I have a child in kindergarten and work part time). I have gone thru close to 1400 pages of records. 2. I have heard from others that complained about these postings and were told by the list manager that as long as the site offered something free, then it was okay. On other list serves people are sometimes not even allowed to promote DNA testing for genealogical use, even though there is no profit made on the testing. I will also be interested in what the list manager has to say about this and if it is allowed, so be it. I am not attacking the person, or their right to do research for a fee, or denying the helpfulness of such services. It is just that the postings make it seem like there is very important information posted and once you go to the site you find it is for fee based services. In all honesty, there is very little offered for free. As for how we might find the services of someone like Melody, most list serves allow tag lines in the signature that reference a person's title and web site. For example, if I had a site at the end of my post my signature might say: Rhonda Tallman Certified Genealogist www.researchforfee.com Which by the way is just an example, not a real site. And Kathy, did you blind copy the list? It looks like your email came directly to me...so if you were wanting the list administrator to see it, they might not, unless you bcc'd them. 2. It isn't that I don't appreciate someone helping others doing genealogical research for free or for a fee, it is just that I object to this forum being used to advertise one's services. 1. Re: [NCRUTHER-L] Re: Info
    2. I agree, free is great...BUT! Think how tough it would be to do out of state research if people (such a Melly) didn't take the time to transcribe records. So what if they cost, you either spend a few bucks and purchase them, or you don't. It is much cheaper purchasing the transcriptions that have been done than the expense to travel to the area or worse yet.. not beable to do any research at all. I have benefited from the things that Melly has transcribed and posted and for that I truely give thanks to her. Bill Floyds site is the ultimate in research of North Carolina, and to him.. WOW.. not enough can be said. He is an amazing man that has brought great progress to my Family research! I have personally done both, transcribed and made records available for free, and also dabbled in publishing for a cost. If you have never transcribed a cemetery, or spent countless hours transcribing old newpapers, or been shut up in a musty court house basement.. please don't be too quick to judge those that charge for their services or transcibing records. If it weren't for these people, records would not be so easily accessible as they are today. So.. whether for a price or for free...GIVE A BIG THANKS FOR THOSE THAT ARE TAKING THE TIME AND MONEY FROM THEIR OWN POCKET TO DO SUCH! Just my two cents worth! Vicki

    2. Actually, I hate to be the one to complain, but isn't your site more commercial than free? You post a little bit of free information while advertising your research services. I may be in the wrong here, but it really bothers me, especially when so many good people on this list share information freely.
