You may want to check out Nathaniel Smalley in Burke Co, NC, on the 1830 census. He is the only Smalley (any spelling) in the area, and he has two males under 5 and 1 male under 10 in his household. In 1840, there is a Nathan Smalley in Pickens Co, SC, and then in 1870 there is a Nathaniel Smalley, age 80, in the household of a John H. Smalley in Franklin Co, GA. Both Nathaniel and John H., 48, were born in NC. Burke to Pickens to north GA was a pretty common migration. Reading these censuses should be helpful to you. > > Subject: > ROLL CALL - SMALLEY, WITHERSPOON, FITE > From: > Sandra Holik <shutterbug1948@yahoo.com> > Date: > Wed, 16 Feb 2005 08:44:50 -0800 (PST) > To: > NCRUTHER-L@rootsweb.com > > >My brick wall is who are my gggrandfather's parents. >He states on his Confederate Pension application that >he was born in 1822 in McDowell County, NC. Hi, Bill, Here is some more feedback. Is it possible to create the web page so that a person doesn't have to scroll right/left to see the whole width of the page? Cecelia
Hello, I have been trying to trace my William HOWE line. We have hit a brick wall with William HOWE marrried to Catherine Unknown. according to 1830 census of Humphreys co. Tn. William was born in NC about 1780-1790. I found a reference to a William HOWE in the 1820 census of Rutherford co. NC. does anyone have any information on this William Howe or his family ? children of William and Catherine HOWE were: Emzala b. abt. 1815-1820 (E.M. / Emzley) m. Candice Cole Zebedee b. abt. 1821 m. Rachele Thomason Arzilivan m. Manervy Barker Amenzel b. 1827 Perlinza b. 1831 m. John Smith Perzilla b. 1833 Perezael b. 1834 any information you may have on any HOW/HOWE family from NC would be appreciated... thank you for your time, Karen Howe
I love it! I'm adding lot's of cousins to my tree. You are making it too easy for us! I can't imagine the hours this new endeavor is taking? But, it's great! You are making Rutherford County the easiest county to do long distance research for. Thank you, Barbara Dyer Channell Researching -- Allen's, Baldridge, Breed's, Bridges, Channell's, Childers, Dyer's, Folsom's, Gibbs, Griffin's, Hamrick's, Harrill's, McBrayer's, Sparks, Splawn's, Waldrop's, Whisler's, and a whole lot more!
My brick wall is who are my gggrandfather's parents. He states on his Confederate Pension application that he was born in 1822 in McDowell County, NC. I know that that county was formed till the 1840's, so he had to have been born in Rutherford, or Burke Counties or one of the other counties that made up McDowell County. His name was James C. Smalley and he married Nancy Elizabeth Witherspoon about 1851 in GA. Thanks! Sandra Smalley Holik __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I just discovered that Betty Camden's Bastardy Bonds book is shown in most (if not all) North Carolina counties on the below Linkpendium web site. First get to the county you are searching and find Bastardy Bonds on the menu. Sometimes the year dates aren't in order. For instance, Rowan Co. jumped from 1809 into the 1870s and I had to scroll down to find the 1811 entries. Betty Pace > http://www.linkpendium.com/
Is this the Withrow line that you are following? Do you have parents for the Captain James Withrow in Rutherford County, NC during this time? James Withrow in Rutherford Co,. NC was given guidance to 2 boys. James and John. Their uncle or father's name was Samuel. So I am assuming James had a brother Samuel. This is James Withrow who married Margaret Ethrington. I do think he founght in the Rev. War.
My lineage through my father is MAHAFFEE (sometimes misspelled in the census records as MAHAFFE, MAHAFFEY, MAHAFFY). Patillo G. MAHAFFEE (picture on _www.findagrave.com_ (http://www.findagrave.com) ) is my great-grandfather (born in 1845 in SC but moved to, and died in, Rutherford County). His father is J. Manning MAHAFFEE (born in 1825 in SC; date and place of death unknown--just found him a few weeks ago.) My father Joseph Walter MAHAFFEE was born in Rutherford County in 1908 and died in Charleston, SC in 1987. His father was Manning Brooks MAHAFFEEE and was married to Ms. Johnnie FORTUNE. His sister Florence married Hicks HAMRICK. Max G. Mahaffee Charleston, SC
John Franklin Grayson married Lillie May Patterson in the early 1900's. He was from Golden Valley in Rutherford County. She was from Patterson Springs in Cleveland County. Does anyone have any information about them or their parents. Thank you for any help you can offer. Kati

Hello Susan, This is a shot in the dark, but... I have a Withrow in my line dating back to the Revolutionary War era. My Withrow line begins with Jacob and wife Elizabeth Alder in the 96 District of SC. They had a son James and I know that in this same era there is a James Withrow that fought in the Rev. War as a Captain. I have observed various spellings for Withrow (Wethrow, Wetherow, Witherow) Is this the Withrow line that you are following? Do you have parents for the Captain James Withrow in Rutherford County, NC during this time? My Withrow line of Jacob and Elizabeth (Alder) Withrow, in addition to James, had John, Jacob, Sarah and David. The family story has it that James Withrow was a patriot during the Rev. War and fought against the British while everyone one else were Loyalist and bought with "Bloody" Bill Cunningham and the British Army. Jacob died in 1781 and Elizabeth died in 1782. The children were all evacuated and forfeited all property in the 96 District, SC. They first sailed from Charleston, SC to East Florida and then to Hants County, Nova Scotia, Canada. They were all given royal land grants in Nova Scotia for their service to the crown. Does any of this fit into your Withrow line? Thanks. David Coates Charlotte, North Carolina
Yes, thank you Ron for the history lesson. I have an ancestor that was married to a Whiteside. Jesse E. Hunsinger married Minnie Bell Whiteside. It is my understanding that either Jesse or his father Sam ran the Hunsinger Cottages at Chimney Rock. Would this Minnie Bell be any ones ancestor? I know she passed away almost 5 years ago but I have no parents listed for her and I would like that. My line is Hunsinger/Huntsinger..thanks Charlotte
The lake (Lake Lure) was built in 1926, If you look at the census records for Rutherford County, up to 1870 you find Whiteside community, after that date it is Golden Valley. Most of my ancestors lived in the early Whiteside Community, later after 1870 the same families were living in Golden Valley. I live only about 5 miles from GV. I agree most of the Whiteside families did and still do live west of Rutherford in the Munford's Cove, Bill's Creek, Uree and what is now Lake Lure area. (most of my ancestors came from this area, including me) But there were a few Whiteside families who lived in the Whiteside Community but not many. Even the road leaving Rutherford to this area today is called Whiteside Road. I will try to find more information. I had read of Golden Valley but did not know of the prior name of Whiteside Settlement. Where did you learn this history? Some family history I have refers to Golden Valley but does not mention Whiteside. Whiteside Settlement must have predated their time there. Was there a Mr. Whiteside who settled the area first? So much to learn and so little time! What a great list - always something worthwhile to learn. Kathy
