    1. WILLIAM M. WILSON - B. 1823
    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. Did this William M. Wilson come from Rutherford Co. NC William M(Morgan?) WILSON married Caroline Earnhardt in Rowan Co. NC. She remarried a Burgess at the death of William M. Wilson in 1861--that was the source of confusion. William M. Wilson was born 1823 (probably in NC but maybe in VA), because he was age 27 in the 1850 census; however, the census taker could have gotten this incorrect.. He was a silversmith, as shown in the 1850 Rowan Co. NC census, living in the Shaver Hotel. Closeby may be a son or brother named Henry Wilson, age 17, also a silversmith. William M. Wilson and Caroline Earnhardt had only one child (Clara Bell Wilson, whom. J. F. Pace in Rowan Co., NC abt. 1874). I cannot find William M. Wilson in the 1860 RowanCo. NC census and suspect that he may have been in VA. I would appreciate any help. Betty Pace - bapace2@juno.com

    1. Insolvent and Removed
    2. Hello Everyone, I have had some folks ask what insolvent and removed meant from the court records name list I sent. Insolvent meant they were unable to pay their debt, including taxes. Removed, I believe, meant that they had left the county sometime during the year. Please, if anyone knows differently, please correct me. Thanks, Melody Booker

    2. Hello Everyone, I had some extra time today and decided I wanted to look ahead in the court records and see what I can find. Depriest Lot No. 5 Elizabeth Depriest Lot No. 6 Jessy Depriest Lot No. 7 William C. Depriest Lot No. 8 Esther Depriest Hope this is helpful to someone! Melody Booker

    1. Pleasant Webb
    2. Larry
    3. I am seeking any additional information that you can provide about the parents/siblings of Pleasant Webb. Thanks a million. ================================================================ Pleasant (Plesent) WEBB was born about ca 1760-1765. His son, Elias, said that his father, Pleasant was born in Ireland (not substantiated). He died between 1830 and 1840 in Ohio, USA. Around 1800 Pleasant and family came in to the Ohio valley from Rutherford County, North Carolina. In 1803 (reported to be 45 years old) he was in Scioto County, Ohio and was said to be a notorious character. Supposedly, he tried to break up a fight between James Bradley and the wife and children of James Quire (Squires). He ended up shooting Mr. Quire (Squires). After this incident at the Licks, he was driven out of that area. He is also said to have been a Tory during the Revolutionary War. Pleasant was in GreenupCounty, Kentucky in 1820 and in Lawrence County, Ohio in 1830, he did not appear in the 1840 census, so it is believed he died between 1830-1840. Pleasant (Plesent) WEBB and Unknown had the following children: James WEBB (1786), Elias WEBB (1788), Thomas Hanley WEBB (1795), Aden WEB! B (1797), Temperance WEBB (1799), William WEBB (1801), Margaret WEBB (1806), Sarah (Sally) WEBB (1809), and Baker WEBB (1811). Larry D. 3. The State Library which is in the State Archives building on Jones St. in Raleigh has recently acquired microfilm reels of Revolutionary pension files. These are in alphabetical order by surname and given name on a number of reels. They include all the papers in each pensioner's file. Some files have many many documents. Since all pensioners from every state are included, I would think that other states may have these files in their archives/libraries. Since you have a file number, you may have already checked this source. I can tell you that I found some of my relatives' files full of details about when and where they enlisted, under whom, their movements with their companies, where they were stationed, even details about whom they fought and where. One document even mentions General Washington and his orders and later mentions the defeat of Cornwallis! I hope this helps. 1. Grigg and Spangler
    2. Hello Everyone, I was just wondering if there were any Spanglers or Griggs on this list who currently live in Cleveland County? I found out that my 5th great grandfather Benjamin Wilkinson's land is now owned by a Spangler and a Grigg and I would love to compare notes to find out the land's history between Ben and current day owners. I will share all the deed information I have. Thanks, Melody

    1. My "drawing"didn't turn out right
    2. Hello Everyone, I tried to "draw" a map of the Magness/1st Broad area but it didn't turn out when sent it. I do know that the Spanglers, Hampton Williams and Beams were on one side of Ball Park Rd in Lawndale and John Harrelson and Crows were on the other side, next to the river. Thanks, Melody

    1. Neighbors around 1st Broad/Magness Creek
    2. Hello Everyone, While in Cleveland County in Lawndale I was able to visit with a Spangler. She told us of the neighbors who lived around her family, I would say in the early 1900s. This would be off of Ball Park Rd. at the area where the 1st Broad River intersects with Magness Creek. The land she was on was bought from Kiser and Hoyle. To the southeast of her would have been Hampton Williams. On the other side of Hampton Williams were the Beams. Across the street would be the 1st Broad River/Magness Creek. There was an old house on this land, probably dating to the 1870s, 1880s. She said she knew that John Harrelson had lived on the land. If anyone is researching Harrelsons, I traced back a bit. Next to Harrelson (and probably where my 5th great grandfather Ben Wilkinson lived) were the Crows. The Beams may be descendants of Martin Beam who bought land from Ben Wilkinson and Thomas Wilkinson about 1805. The Crows may be descendants of Abraham Crow who had two Wilkinson children bound out to him. I would like to hear from anyone researching these names and maybe we can figure this out using deeds and such. Thanks, Melody Booker 1st Broad River John Harrelson B Spangler (Kiser - Hoyle) A Ben Wilkinson (1800) L Hampton Williams L Crow P Beam A R K R D.

    1. My trip to Rutherford and Cleveland Counties
    2. Hello Everyone, I returned from my trip to NC on March 25. I had a wonderful time. North Carolina is a beautiful state. So much so, my family and I are planning to move there. We will probably be living in the Raleigh area by this summer. I spent a few days (not as much as I wanted) in Rutherford County and Cleveland County. I had SUCH a good time. Thank you Kim Philbeck Wood (my Wilkinson "cousin") for being my tour guide. Kim and I found the creeks and river our ancestors lived on. And had quite an adventure doing it. I hope before we do that again I grow a few extra inches so I can get up into the truck a little easier...lol. I am a city girl, so going thru cow pastures and thru the woods was an experience for me. But I loved every minute of it. I took pictures while there of First Broad River and some of the creeks around Lawndale. I will be posting them on my website as soon as I get them into the computer. It has been a long time since I have updated my website but hope to get it current and start posting information on a regular basis again. Thanks for listening to my ramblings and stop by my website in the next week if you'd like to see the Cleveland County pictures. Melody Booker http://www.insearchofancestors.com

    1. A question for Rutherford/Cleveland Co. residents
    2. Hello everyone, I am going to be in North Carolina from March 16-25. I am hoping to do as much genealogy as I can while there. I will be trying to find where my Nowlins and Wilkinsons lived in Rutherford/Cleveland county. I have a question for those of you who live in the area. I have talked to a Nowlin descendant, Dr. Paul Nolan who lives in Tennessee. He said he remembers finding the grave of Hardin Nowlin who died in 1805. It was out in a field. There was a large, stand up stone. He said big enough that children were playing on it. This may/probably would have been somewhere in the Lawndale area. I believe somewhere in the vicinity of Magness Creek/Big Harris Creek. There is a Nolan Rd. in that area now, so it may be somewhere along there. Has anyone heard of or seen this grave? Hardin Nowlin is my 4th great uncle. I have reason to believe he was probably buried on the land of his father David Nowlin Sr. my 5th great grandfather. I would love to find where they were and also the Wilkinsons. I plan to take lots of pictures and hopefully they will come out clear enough to share! Thanks, Melody Booker

    1. Crawford DNA testing
    2. My Crawfords, possible John Crawford and son George Washington Crawford (wife Mary (Polly) Hunter) moved from Rutherford Co., NC around 1830 to Monroe Co. TN. From there George and Mary ended up in Union Co., GA by the 1850 census, and their son Levi was my gg grandfather. Now one of my Crawford cousins submitted his DNA for testing and with only 5 tests completed so far, we matched two of them! Both men live in Canada. The father of one moved their from Scotland and the other has his line traced to Ireland, probably Ulster. We need more Crawfords to be tested. How did our Crawfords arrived who arrived in Rutherford Co., before 1800 match a Scot who moved to Canada from Scotland in the 20th century? We are still waiting for the rest of the test results of one of the matches who took the 37 marker test to see if we continue to match perfectly. We did the 25 marker test, and one man only did the 12 marker test. If you know of a Crawford who came from Rutherford Co., please encourage them to take this test. It can open many new and interesting avenues for research. Ida Crawford Madison

    1. Cleveland County WPA Cemetery information
    2. Derick Hartshorn
    3. Dear folks, It has been a while since Paul Dellinger's copy of the Cleveland WPA Cemetery Census finally made it to the electronic stage. Ann Propst took my copy of that 4-inch thick binder of legal-size pages and turned it into electronic text. It is currently being transformed into the largest single source of Cleveland County cemetery data. Compiled by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in 1939, it is a record of the census takers pen. There may be errors but this is a full transcript with no conjecture included, except specified explanations. Our first consideration is that folks have ease of use of a simple search engine. We wanted the user to have cut-and-paste ability so allowing direct data entry. And, we also wanted Ann to have something for her 3-month, non-stop transcription effort. A more descriptive page on the CLEVELAND COUNTY, NC WPA CEMETERY CENSUS may be found at: http://webpages.charter.net/derickh/CWPA.htm Derick & Ann
