    3. (Sue - I sent this to you personally but not sure it went through so I will post on the list:) Sue, I am not actively researching this line but here are some tidbits that might get you going in the right direction: Rutherford Co Heritage, Vol 1 page 379 in an article written by James E. Lancaster he lists one of the children of Daniel Shipman and Elizabeth Burleson Shipman as "Rebecca b ca 1757 m (Jacob?) Cisco." So you might want to check out the "Cisco" line as well as the Francisco line. I don't know if James Lancaster is a member of this list or not but someone may know him. Also: Bettye Steele Watters has a book on the Shipmans that might help. I think either of these folks can help you with documentation. Kathy Summers

    2. Jeaneane Williams
    3. The following e-mail is of great concern to any genealogists who use archives. Please read, sign the petition, then send this to any other Rootsweb or genealogy lists you're on. The President's budget recommendations for Fiscal Year 2006 slash or eliminate more than 150 federal programs. In that budget, the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) has been targeted to receive NO funding. This includes no funds for the grants program and no funds for staffing to support the NHPRC programs. It effectively eliminates NHPRC. The Council of State Historical Records Coordinators, the Society of American Archivists, and the National Association for Government Archivists and Records Administrators are working collaboratively to address this threat to NHPRC and NARA. Archivists across the U.S. are rallying to save NHPRC while also ensuring that NARA has sufficient funding to sustain its current programs and continue to advance in areas that benefit all archival repositories and every citizen of the United States. As part of our efforts to continue to express to Congress interest in restoration of funding for NHPRC, we have created an online petition. Please consider signing this petition, and please forward it to any listservs, e-mail groups, or organizations and people you feel would be interested in helping with this effort. It is a quick and easy way for many people to assist. The petition will be forwarded to the House Appropriations Committee and Subcommittee on Treasury, Transportation, HUD and the Judiciary in late May. The petition can be access at: _www.savearchives.org_ (http://www.savearchives.org/) Click on the "petition" button. If you have not received a previous action alert on this issue, we encourage you to also write a letter to your members of Congress. For information on writing letters of support, see any of the following websites: www.savearchives.org_ (http://www.savearchives.org/) www.coshrc.org_ (http://www.coshrc.org/) www.archivists.org_ (http://www.archivists.org/) Thanks for your efforts to save this important program for archives! 2. Hello Everyone, After my trip to NC in March, I mentioned that my family and I are wanting to move to the Raleigh/Cary area. Shortly after a lady from the Cary area e-mailed me and offered to help with information and such. I thought I saved the e-mail, but it is no where to be found. If you are that lady, would you please e-mail again? Thanks, Melody Booker

Well, let me explain. The Rutherford County, NC has two rooms for the Register of Deeds Office. One has the newer records in it with all the working personnel. In the other room is all the older records with open access with no supervision. I have grumbled before about people like you and me, researchers, unshelving books and never putting them up. Today I was in there making photos of the pages in a Deed Book when I found that two pages in the book had been ripped out. In the next room is a copy machine that can be used to make copies for a dime a piece. These Deed Books are our oldest and the NC State Archives made these hand written copies of the old deeds that were placed in the NC Archives. The pages were laminated so they would last almos forever. So now rather than make a copy we rip out the pages, just great! This is the deed that was ripped out "Johnston, James / Johnston, John / Deed/E-I/34! > 1/1789" > I know that we have all seen people doing things in the Register of Deeds Offices across the state that were not "just right" and didn't say anything to them. We need to start saying something and kind of policing ourselves or we are going to eventually lose our free access to these public records. 3. Hi, Lynn, Don't count on such people to be honorable enough to return the pages. Such people aren't honorable or they wouldn't have stolen the pages to begin with. They are nothing more than mere criminals. I was in the NC state archives earlier this year. I was using one box of files for a particular county (not Rutherford). It was an absolute mess! Many papers had been put into the wrong file folders and the folders were out of order. It was ridiculous. You'd think anyone with sense enough to go to the archives could put things into the proper file folder. The mandated system says to take out one folder at a time, putting this big pink (orange?) card sticking out in its place. Then put the papers back into the file folder and return it to where the pink card is. Duh! Some people just resent being told how to do things and refuse to cooperate. Even in a room as small as the reading room of the archives it is not possible for the employees to monitor as closely as I'm sure they would like. Anyway, that's what I was told when I called attention to the mis-filing to the employee. He thanked me for letting them know so they could fix the problem. OK, I'm getting off my high horse.
