My source states that Rowan left Salisbury in 1858 and becames a traveling instructor in stringed instruments and ball room dancing. By 1860 Rowan was living in New Bern and it was there her met Sarah Gilbert. Rowan ran a very sucessful "Dancing and Walting Academy" that was operated on a seasonal basis. I assume at other times he may had been in other towns running his dance academy. After the fall of New Bern in March 1862, the Academy closed I would love to know the source you are reading on Sarah Slater.
