It was not always that way. East Spencer is a by-product of the growth of the old Southern Railway in Spencer. East Spencer has often been called the wrong side of the tracks. As the area grew there has been a migration of non-blacks away from East Spencer. The town has run down over the last many years and the moving of the railroad shops probably was the cause. I went to grade school with many friends that lived in East Spencer. Lots of corruption with town leaders and officials has been rampant. I recon you could say where there is no hope the people perish. Many fine people have come out of East Spencer & many still live there.
