    1. Re: [NCROWAN] African American Long family & Holts of Halifax and Rowan Co, NC
    2. You know what I really would like to check out? Back in the 1850s and 1860s there list two women whose last names are Heilig, and they had slaves. Many of those slaves remained in Rowan County even after slavery was over....there is also a place called Heiligtown of which I have always been most curious about. Many of these Heilig folks are related to me....because many of them married into the House family which is my mother's family. If you need to know more please let me know. Eastern Standard Time, bwiggins@widomaker.com writes: Joseph and Kelly, Reading your email exchanges about African American and slave records reminded me that I have been trying for years to reach members of an African American/mulatto family in Halifax Co, NC. (Some later moved to Rowan County and farther north.) I have documentation to prove that African American Sue Long, born about 1872 in Halifax Co, NC, was the long-time housekeeper of white landowner Hiram Holt, Jr. According to my mother, it was a well-known family "secret" that Uncle Hiram and Sue Long were a couple. Sue Long and Hiram Holt had 10 mulatto children: James, Charley, Lena, Viola, David, Annie, Frances, Manerva, Mabel, and Eddie. They were listed in censuses with the last name Long. Sue later married a Jenkins, after Hiram died. Sue Long's descendants may not know of this Holt connection. My mother and aunts said that Sue Long was descended from slaves. My fellow Holt researchers and I have put out many queries over the years, with no response. Hiram Holt, Jr. descends from the well-documented Randall Holt family of Hoggs Island, Surry Co, VA. Hiram Holt, Jr. was the brother of my great grandmother Anne Mariah Holt Wallace. Hiram never married and named Sue Long in his will in 1912. Sue Long is listed in the 1920 census as owning farm land, free/not mortgaged. She evidently took the money Hiram Holt left her in his 1912 will and bought land near the rest of the Holt family. Sue was pregnant with a son, Eddie, when Hiram died. Forgive me for being so long-winded, but I really would like to pass on this family connection, if there is someone in Sue Long's family who would like to hear about this.
