Roberta, This Gaither - Cunningham name is really interesting information because my Samuel Cunningham b abt 1814, NC oldest son Franklin Marion (Francis) Cunningham married into the Gaither family in 1855. marrying Margaret Emiline Gaither, daughter of Isom Gaither and Sarah Leach, also a Gaither descendent. This Gaither branch was originally from Maryland, descending from John "Gator". I believe that they married into the Ijames family in Rowan Co., NC. I am wondering if your Martha Cunningham might be an ancestor of my g-g-grandfather Samuel Cunningham b. 1839, NC. I have not been able to find much information on Samuel Cunningham except for census and tax records, and have his signature on his deceased sons Civil War records claiming the remains. I do believe his brother might have been William Cunningham, b abt. 1811, NC. He is also found in tax and census records. At one point I thought their father to be John Cunningham of Rowan Co, but have not been able to prove it. After the Civil War I have been able to trace only 2 of his 3 living sons but not Samuel himself or his wife Nancy and two younger children John and Mary Cunningham. Do you think their might be a connection between our Cunningham families? I know my Rowan Co. families intermarried cousins and in-laws frequently. I would be happy to give you more details on my Cunningham ancestors if you would like.
