I believe your Drew Smith is the son of John Smith and Polly/Mary? Bryan of Rowan Co., NC. I have seen the name of Drew Smith in some land records when my Margaret Smith (his sister) inherited land from her father's estate (John Smith's estate). My Margaret Smith m. Isaac Earnhardt in Rowan Co., NC 23 Nov. 1822. John Smith (father Peter Schmidt/Smith Jr., grandfather Peter Schmidt Sr.) was born in 1780 and died very young in 1812 in Rowan Co. NC. His wife was Polly/Mary Bryan (31 Oct. 1784-21 Apr. 1843)and they were married 14 April 1804 in Rowan Co., NC.. After John Smith's death, Polly/Mary remarried Jacob Weant (another German name) in 1814 in Rowan Co. NC. The children of John Smith and Polly were: 1) Margaret Smith (1806-1895) m. Isaac Earnhardt--my line 2) Wiley Smith 3) Peter Smith (probably named for John's father Peter Jr.) 4) Elizabeth Smith 5) Drury/Drewery Smith (These are not in birth order probably, since I don't have the dates of birth. The names have always seen odd to me for a German father, but I believe the name Wiley has been associated with the Morgan Bryans of NC. I haven't been able to find Polly/Mary? Bryan's parents because that is such a common name and there are an awful lot of Bryans in NC. I have even wondered if she was a Bryan widow when John Smith married her in 1804. When she married Jacob Weant, she married as Polly Smith, of course.) The children of Jacob Weant and Polly were: 1) Mary Caroline Weant 2) Nancy Catherine Weant 3) Lucy Weant 4) John B. Weant 5) Sarah Ann Weant m. Henry A. Smith Our information on the parents John and Polly Bryan Smith came from a genealogist in the Rowan History Room (M. J. Fowler). John's father (Peter Jr.) died about 1779, when his son John was still very young. John's siblings were Peter (III), Henry A. and George Alexander Smith. Peter III must have been older because he chose John Steele as his guardian in the estate settlement letter of administration (issued 3 Feb. 1789) in Rowan Co., NC. John's mother was Margaret Ford, but I don't know anything about her, except that is the name given in Wilbur B. Smith's research on the German Smiths of Rowan Co., I do know that when my Margaret Smith inherited property from her father, the name Drew Smith is mentioned. I can't remember whether other children were mentioned or not, and right now I can't put my hand on that estate paper because it is a photocopy of records in the McCubbins Files (filmed) in Rowan Co., NC. I had not known that Drew/Drury Smith had gone to TN, but I think it is the same man. I notice that you have different parents for your Drew Smith. Can I ask why you think so? It is very difficult to research Smiths in Rowan Co., NC, but my Schmidt/Smith group go back to the Peter Schmidt Sr. (d.1767) who came over from Germany with Gaspar/Caspar and David Schmidt very early (before 1757). They did live a while in Lancaster Co., PA, where it is possible that Peter Sr. converted to the Dunkerd (Church of the Brethren) as early as the 1740s in Ephrata, PA. Although he was not a Moravian, his name does appear in some Moravian Records in that early period, and his church seems to have been closely identified with that group. Unfortunately, there were two Peter Schmidt Sr., at roughly the same time frame. He may have been an Elder in the Dunkerd/Tunkerd (because they baptised by immersion). I don't think his children embraced that faith, however. I have wondered if John Smith was somehow involved in the War of 1812, since that is the year he died. However, I haven't been able to find anything on that possibility. There may be loose estate papers on him in the Rowan History Room but I haven't made an effort to get them. Let me know what you think. I believe that this is the same family with the youngest son "Silas" who is age 16 in the 1870 Census; not born yet..would be 1854; and the older children with households of their own showing near by. Because of family recollections of the surname "Pitcher";I also believe that this head of household (Drury Smith) is a descendant of Drury Smith (b. 1796 in Paw Paw, NC; the s/o Frank Smith and Anny Grogan. {Frank Smith was also m to Elenor[Nellie] Grogan} Drury; s/o Frank Smith was married once to Francis Pitcher and later to Sally Sims Wilkes Claybrooks(I believe that Claybrooks was the surname of Sally's former husband). I BELIEVE all of this good stuff but can't make the link. (Too many Drury Smiths in NC and no clue where Paw Paw, NC is!)
