    1. [NCRowan] Is John Lewis Beard in the Rowan County Heritage Book?
    2. Carole Cook
    3. Is there someone who has a copy of the Rowan County Heritage book, who will check to see if there is an article in it on John Lewis Beard? If so, and there is an article on him, I have some questions for which I need answers: 1. Was he a German? 2. Where did he live prior to being in Rowan Co., NC? 3. What was the name of his wife? 4. What were the names of his children? 5. What were the names of his children's spouses? 6. What is the earliest date for which there is a record of his being in Rowan Co., NC? I will appreciate an answer to even one of my questions. Thank you, Carole Irene Crismon Cook

What is the earliest date for which there is a record of his >being in Rowan Co., NC? > I don't have the Rowan Heritage book, but I do have him in my personal files, and yes, he was of German origin. The surname was originally BARTH ("Bart" is German for "beard", so this is a reasonable anglicization). My interest in this family is primarily in the ZEVELY connection, and I haven't researched them personally, so what I'm showing here is all second-hand information and not verified. It would appear that they came to NC from Pennsylvania. NC Burial: Place: Old Lutheran Cemetery, Salisbury NC Spouse: Mary FAUST In 1996, Bruce Cogan gave me the following information: "Johann Ludwig Sr. began the Old Lutheran graveyard in Salisbury NC, on his property, for the burial of a young daughter in 1768. He deeded a tract of land to the German Lutheran Church of Salisbury to establish a church and a graveyard there. He is certainly buried there himself, but neither his grave nor that of his daughter can be located, and the name of the daughter is unknown. His will mentions nine children, none of whom appears to have died as early as 1768." -- Elizabeth Harris ncgen@mindspring.com NCGenWeb project: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgenweb/ Winston-Salem NC area genealogy: http://www.fmoran.com/
