He was probably from Virginia, since his daughter Frances gave her birthplace as Virginia in the 1850 census. John had daughters Frances (married Micajah Callaway) and Nancy (married James Davis - my ancestor). We know this from their marriage records. Almost certainly he also had a daughter Betsy Mary, who married John Bright. John's will was probated on 20 August, 1810 in Madison County. It is in Will Book A., page 545. He did not mention his daughters in his will. He did list his sons and grandchildren as follows: son Philip grandson HENRY BRIGHT HAWKINS grandson Elijah, son of Weden (another son) grandson Philip grandson George son Elijah I have had a terrible time separating my John out from among the many other John Hawkins in Madison. I have assumed that he was from Spotsylvania County, since so many of the Madison County Hawkinses were. I Another Hawkins researcher believes my John to have had brothers Joseph and Philip. I would like to hear from anyone recognizing any of the names.
