There were not marriage for samuel in Rowan County, Davidson county, or in the Index of North Carolina marriage bonds up to 1867. I checked the stout info for Ancestry.com, which you probably already have done, but none of the entries give a marriage bond for Samuel and His first wife. Most of the references were made to the records of a Bill Stout on RootsWeb. Sorry I could not be of more help. Good Luck. 1. Re: [NCROWAN] Slave records
    2. Here is a web site that you might want to check out, it's the Race and Slavery Petitions Project for the southern states. Race and Slavery Petitions Project In the summer of 1991, Loren Schweninger, a professor of history, began traveling the South visiting courthouses and state archives in search of legal petitions related to race and slavery. He expected to find dry facts buried in legal terminology. What he actually found was a wealth of new information about peoples' lives and circumstances between the American Revolution and the Civil War. The petitions portray, in vivid and personal terms, the contrasts, ambivalence, contradictions, ironies, and ambiguities that comprise southern history. He began a project that became a journey. You can follow in his footsteps. They have an online searchable database at the following link: http://library.uncg.edu/slavery_petitions/ Linda Monticelli -----Original Message----- From: Kindred Roots GS <mail.list@kindredroots.com> To: ncrowan@rootsweb.com Sent: Mon, 2 Feb 2009 3:18 pm Subject: Re: [NCROWAN] Slave records Joseph, I am the individual that did a lookup for you threw Jan. 3. Possibly this might help, it is from the Thyatira Presbyterian Church Graveyard abstracted by Mary Bondurant Warren:   Thomas Gillespie, d. 12-12-1797, 78y   Naomi Gillespie, wife of Thomas Gillespie, d. 12-12-1797, 69y   For the convenience of visitors certain graves have been marked with numbered white stakes, beginning with the oldest known graves:   6. Thomas and Naomi Gillespie, also ancestors of President Polk; an obituary of Naomi reports "Died at 2 p.m. on Tuesday the 15th of December 1796, Mrs. Naomi Gillespie, aged 69; at 10 o'clock the same evening Mr. Thomas Gillespie, aged 76. They were the first settlers in Rowan County on the west side of the Yadkin River, and lived in the strictest bond of matrimonial friendship for a space of 51 years. Their descendants amount to 63, of whom six sons carried them to their place of interment, where they were deposited in the same coffin."   The foregoing is taken from the descriptive pamphlet available at the church.   (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ncrowan/thyatira.txt)   Thomas Gillespie's will was written 15 Nov. 1796 and probated 1791 [?], according to Rowan County, North Carolina will abstracts by Jo White Linn.  The 1791 probate date is obviously not correct and it's very likely that it should be 1797, the 7 could have looked more like a 1, thus the reason for the question mark by Jo Linn.   Also buried at Thyatira Presbyterian Church Graveyard is a Robert Gillespie who died 21 Mar. 1760 at the age of 36 years, making his year of birth around 1724.  Could this Robert Gillespie have been related to Thomas Gillespie?   I believe this Robert Gillespie who died in 1760 was the one who was scalped by an Indian during the Cherokee uprising, I read about this in Carolina Cradle.  I was fascinated by the story of his widow Elizabeth Maxwell Gillespie who later married William Steel.   Linda Monticelli       --- On Tue, 2/3/09, Larry & Robbie Reaves <reaves@seark.net> wrote: From: Larry & Robbie Reaves <reaves@seark.net> Subject: [NCROWAN] Obituary To: ncrowan@rootsweb.com Date: Tuesday, February 3, 2009, 2:47 AM I hope someone can help me with this obituary for: Thomas and Naomi Gillespie Born: ? I had that he had two plots on the Yadkin River in Rowan County right after the war. (This is very close to where I am living now) Since Thomas was reportedly born in Iredell, he either moved or never lived on that land, because there is no Yadkin in Iredell, about 4o miles w of Salisbury. I also have some info from court proceedings in which a neighbor, James Ellis claims that the three youngest sons of Thomas (including Robinson and Washington) were actually his sons, not Thomas Carney's and he left his land in a will to them. 2. You know what I really would like to check out? Back in the 1850s and 1860s there list two women whose last names are Heilig, and they had slaves. Many of those slaves remained in Rowan County even after slavery was over....there is also a place called Heiligtown of which I have always been most curious about. Many of these Heilig folks are related to me....because many of them married into the House family which is my mother's family. If you need to know more please let me know. It was not always that way. East Spencer is a by-product of the growth of the old Southern Railway in Spencer. East Spencer has often been called the wrong side of the tracks. As the area grew there has been a migration of non-blacks away from East Spencer. The town has run down over the last many years and the moving of the railroad shops probably was the cause. I went to grade school with many friends that lived in East Spencer. Lots of corruption with town leaders and officials has been rampant. I recon you could say where there is no hope the people perish. Many fine people have come out of East Spencer & many still live there. A few folks were raised in East Spencer who have done very well in life. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My 4th great grandfather was William Stafford. He married Sarah Bullock and moved to Ohio. Several of his sons, including his son Robert later moved to Morgan County, Indiana.
