I have a William M. WILSON (b.@1821-d.1864). He married Caroline EARNHART in 1857 in Rowan County. Their child was Clara Bell WILSON (1858-1943), my ggrandmother, who married John Fletcher PACE (1844-1901Rowan). The name Clara Bell may have come from the Wilson family. William M. WILSON was living in the Shaver Hotel (Mansion House) in Salisbury in the 1850 census. He was 29 years old and a silversmith. He may have had a previous marriage because the age difference between himself and Caroline EARNHART is 17 years. The fact that he was living in a hotel implies there was no immediate family in Salisbury. In 1850 he was a 27-year-old silversmith living in the Shaver Hotel in Salisbury, Rowan Co., NC, suggesting to me that he had no relatives nearby. At a rooming house in 1850 was a teenaged Henry Wilson, also a silversmith. I know there was a PA silversmith named William R. Wilson who came to Salisbury, but I don't think he is the same as my William M. Wilson. William M. WILSON died before May 1864, as that is when his estate was settled in Salisbury. There is a W. MORGAN WILSON shown in Co. C, 8th NC Regiment from Rowan; he was said to have died in Salisbury while home on furlough, possibly of wounds/disease--no date given (Jethro Rumple book Roll of Honor). I do not know if this is the same person as my William M. WILSON as Rumples' ages don't match the 1850 census exactly. I would love to know his parents' names and would share later information on my family. There was more likely a strong box hidden in the house. But if you were trading for something that involved currency, the gold and silver coinage were used most frequently. You must remember that coins were obvious denominations, where as bank notes and paper currency. were easily forged and the illitterate persons would not have trusted it. Also since wills were many times made shortly before the death, then yes, that is probably what was in his possesion at the time he made the will. Notice how only the last line states "currency of this state." Please understand I am not an expert on this subject, I just happened to see a program on maybe History channel, on the subject of currency, and the US Mints, Banks, and federal reserve system within the past month or so. Do you think it safe to assume that John had no bank account and all his money was English except $40 dollars? Here is the excerpt from his will where both currencies are used: It is my will and desire that in case my wife should hereafter marry, then and in that case, I give and bequeath to her the sum of one hundred silver dollars and also her bed and furniture to her, her heirs and assigns forever. I give and bequeath unto my son Thomas Philips the sum of five shillings to him his heirs and assigns forever. I give and bequeath to my son John Philips the sum of fifty shillings to him his heirs and assigns forever. I give and bequeath to my son Gabriel Philips the sum of fifty shillings to him his heirs and assigns forever. It led to a great many problems. Do a search on history of US currency, and you should find more thorough details than I can give you off the top of my head. Many wills states that an heir be given spanish milled coins, or other forms of currency. Oft times foreign currency was more stable than what was produced in the US at that time. Ninian was 58 and his wife Esther was 50. My great grandfather Walter B. was 20, a ditto mark indicates his occupation was the same as his 23 year old brother, Andr. M, it appears to be Nitter, but could be Miller. In 1860 Iredell, Williamberg P.O., Ninian & Esther are on line 10 in dwelling 462, family 443. Only two daughters remain in the household - Elizabeth and Catherine. Walter and wife Loretta are in Caldwell KY then. And by the 1880 census, on page No. 13, dist. 1, Enumeration dist. No. 163, his household includes his 58 year old sister Elizabeth (evidently never married) along with my grandfather Robert A Steele, then aged 13. I have wondered if James Steele of Iredell's 1860 census could have been a brother to Ninian, because of the 4 year old daughter named Esther. But I have no idea who Ninian's parents were. It has been a formitive brick wall. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
