All of which go between Cherokee and African American with German as well. My research goes to Joel House, my greatgrandfather who lived in Cabarrus County, and according to the 1850 and 1869 census of that county was a free man, a laborer, classified as mulatto. In the 1870 census of Rowan County is listed my greatgrandmother Keziah House, age 40, Black, four sons: Sire, Monroe, Martin, and Jackson. Jackson known as John was my grandfather born about 1860. Now Sire House, the oldest, married Eliza Shad in 1873; children I do not know; however in the listing for Eliza Shad there was a Mitchell and Roseanne Shad, and on that list was Elizabeth House, along with some Heilig children, Sidney, Beulah, Effie, James, Bessie. Also, my Aunt Maggie House, married a John Heilig, whose family was born, reared, many of which still live in a Salisbury community known as ! Heiligtown. Need to find more Heiligs. Thank you. Joseph
Roberta, This Gaither - Cunningham name is really interesting information because my Samuel Cunningham b abt 1814, NC oldest son Franklin Marion (Francis) Cunningham married into the Gaither family in 1855. marrying Margaret Emiline Gaither, daughter of Isom Gaither and Sarah Leach, also a Gaither descendent. This Gaither branch was originally from Maryland, descending from John "Gator". I believe that they married into the Ijames family in Rowan Co., NC. I am wondering if your Martha Cunningham might be an ancestor of my g-g-grandfather Samuel Cunningham b. 1839, NC. I have not been able to find much information on Samuel Cunningham except for census and tax records, and have his signature on his deceased sons Civil War records claiming the remains. I do believe his brother might have been William Cunningham, b abt. 1811, NC. He is also found in tax and census records. At one point I thought their father to be John Cunningham of Rowan Co, but have not been able to prove it. After the Civil War I have been able to trace only 2 of his 3 living sons but not Samuel himself or his wife Nancy and two younger children John and Mary Cunningham. Do you think their might be a connection between our Cunningham families? I know my Rowan Co. families intermarried cousins and in-laws frequently. I would be happy to give you more details on my Cunningham ancestors if you would like. After I sent you the e-mail on Dr. Daniel Hunt, I started looking thru material I had on the Hunts. Found this query in an old journal: Seek proof that Dr. Daniel Hunt, will dated 1789 d 1806 Rowan was bro of Col. Jonathan Hunt 1716-1783. Need maiden name of Daniel's wf Susannah and wife of Daniel's son, Cpl. Jonathan Hunt 1760-1842. MR. Joe Williams, 2608 Southlawn Dr. El. Reno, OK 73036. (1986) This led me to look for info on Col. Jonathan Hunt, who was in this area in 1750 and I knew was part of the migration from New Jersey, settleing in Jersey Settlement (now Davidson County.) Daniel Hunt's will was made 30 Aug 1789 probated 1789???: wife Susannah, sons: John, Gershum, Arthur, Daniel, Dau: Margaret, Ame, Charity. Exec: Susanna, John and John Green. This is another family, who used the same names over and over. FIRST FAMILIES OF JERSEY SETTLEMENT: The Hunts were on Long Island on 4 Jun 1714 when John Sr. b c1658 son of Ralph Hunt of Newton bought 500 acfres of land in Hopewell, NJ. on March 7 1914 John Hunt and Joanna of Newton sold 100 acres in Newton. Joanna was a widow in 1733. Joanna Hunt's son, John Jr. b c1690 in Newton, married 8 Feb1714 Margaret Moore, probably daughter of Gersham Moore. (this nam Gersham is used in the Hunt family) John and Margaret's son Johathan 1717-1783 married c1737 Mary Smith, dau of Andrew and Sarah Stout. Smith. THE PITT/SMITH BIBLE John Hunt, Sr. died in Hopewell, NJ leaving a will dated 11 Feb 1740/1, probated 1Oct 1748, naming wife Margaret, Children: Jonathan, Johanna, Charity, John, Noah, Greshom, Daniel and Enoch. Also in Rowan County with Jonathan were his two brothers Daniel. Enoch and Gershom Hunt. (Daniel's daughter, Hannah married John Green, (Rowan) 16 Jan 1779 with Owen Hunt bondsman. The Green family was also from Hopewell, NJ) In one article JOhn Sr.'s wife is Johanna, in the will she is Margaret. possible that Margaret is a second wife??? So if Dr.Daniel and Jonathan are brothers, most of the info would pertain to Daniel. I believe I remember reading somewhere that there is a Hunt book on Jonathan Hunt. I will check in the library. I hope this helps. Pat Beck Johanna Hunt b 1717-1782son of John and MArgaret Hunt, married c1690 at Newton 8 February 1714 MArgaret Moore, probably daughter of Gersham Moore.
