My Dad's uncle was also named Hugh, late 1800s birth. My father was an ONLY CHILD: Prentiss Oswald (called P.O.) Stephenson, b. 1914, on 1920 US Census for Fred & Lutie (Mattie Louise White) Stephenson, Lawrence County, Oakville District, Alabama. (Mother, Opal Lucille Harris, met my father when she lived at Mt. Hope). Having deceased parents & grandparents, I've REALLY been hard-pressed to find (or remember) the name of my GGrandfather! My grandfather (Fred Stephenson) died before my parents married in 1939; G'ma S. died in the 1960s. Your post jogged my memory; "Hodge Lawson" is my GGpa! You've confirmed connection to Carolina Stephensons I'd read travelled from Scotland/Ireland/Carolinas/Tenn, then to Alabama.ANY other info you may have on my White's (G'ma brother was Walter White) or Stephenson's roots would be greatly appreciated. Fred's brothers I can remember hearing of were: Hugh, ! Garland, Grady(?), Malcolm, Arthur, Pruitt, and a sister Gertrude who married Tom Chenault, all live(d) in Alabama. Supposedly, my "tree branch" descended from James Stephenson, 1st generation to Ireland, son of a Scotland shepherd,Robert--not related to the famous England railway set, though I see postings that say White/Stephensons in USA are. My info comes from a 1902 book written by J.C. Stephenson of Tennessee, which said the others in USA (not coming here) changed spelling to a "V" & our branch kept "PH"; modern media tells me he probably erred on that! Mentioned as an ancestor, in the Carolinas, was "Long Robert" Stephenson, nickname due to height. Have you heard of him? The book referred to "the Five" coming over: Wm, James,Ann, & 1 more brother & sister I don't recall right now. Best Regards, Happy Hunting, and Thanks Barb

Hi, I don't know if you got an answer to your query or not. There is a book written by a ___Powell. It is entitled something like "Gazetteer of North Carolina," and your local library might have it, depending on where you life. I'm sorry I can't recall the author's first name. Maybe someone on the list can supply that and perhaps a more accurate title. The book is very useful.
