    3. To all - I am new to the Rowan County list. I am most interested in any information I can find on a Benjamin Davis. I have a copy of his marriage record to Anna Stafford dated March 15, 1801 in Rowan County. He was born about 1768 I believe in NC and he died in 1837 in Fayette County Ohio. I believe he moved from NC sometime between 1802 and 1810. I have much information on him once he moved to Ohio. I am looking for the names of his parents, siblings, etc. Any help anyone can provide me or point me in the right direction would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance. Russ Frank Cary, NC

    3. Schoolmaster in Rowan Co., NC 1827-28, JESSE RANKIN I went to the Rankin GenForum page and found this on this apparently Presbyterian minister, who must have run a private school in Rowan Co., NC where my DAVID & JOSEPH POOL and TOBIAS LEMLY were educated, plus others. It is not clear which NC country the Rev. Rankin originally came from, perhaps Guilford Co., NC judging by some of the other entries in this long posting. What Presbyterian Church was Rev. Jesse Rankin affiliated with? His parents were JOHN RANKIN & TABITHA WHARTON. From: Hudson Meacham --- hudsonmeacham@prodigy.net On Rankin GenForum posting. 15. Surnames: POOL, LEMLY, PACE, EARNHARDT Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/0VB.2ACI/6971 Message Board Post: Does anyone know anything about the Rev. JESSE RANKIN's school in 1827-28? What denomination was Reverend Rankin? It will perhaps give me some clue as to the religion of my Pool and Lemly family connection See the obit below. The most recent issue of the Rowan Co. Genealogical Society Journal (Vol. 16, #3, 2002) contains the obituary from the Carolina Watchman on April 15, 1886 of a Mr. REMUS J. WEST (aged about 73 years). In the obituary the school of Mr. West is mentioned: "He was a pupil in the school of the late a Rev. JESSE RANKIN, in 1827-28, some of his fellow pupils being Dr. ALBERT T. POWE; the late HENRY and TOBIAS LEMLY; the late DAVID and JOS. POOL; the late OBADIAH WOODSON, and others." I think these pupils were all from somewhat wealthy families. I am certain that the David and Joseph Pool are the sons of John Pool (d.1832). David Pool studied silvermaking in Philadelphia PA around 1830-32, returning home to Salisbury upon the death of his father in 1832. There was a family tie to the Lemlys. Tobias L. Lemly married the sister of David and Joseph Pool, Mariah/Maria Pool in Rowan Co.NC in 1840. His father was Samuel Lemly, and her father was John Pool. Shortly after this marriage, the entire family moved south, probably first to SC and then on to MS, where Mariah/Maria Pool Lemly died. In 1849 in Jackson MS, General Tobias L. Lemly of Mississippi City, MS, married Mrs. Lucinda Hall (widow) of Jackson MS. His first wife (Maria Pool) had died in late 1847. In March of 1848, measles took the life of two young children of Tobias Lemly: Laura Lemly(youngest daughter) and Albert Gallatin Lemly (youngest son). From this phrasing in the obit, it appears there were older children. I don't know where the title "General" came from, perhaps the Mexican War. His father was Col. Samuel Lemly and his mother was Elizabeth Furr, d/o Tobias Furr, all originally from Rowan Co. NC. I am not sure who he is but he must be a part of my Julian family somehow. "Death of JOHN JULIAN - Another old and valued citizen of this county passed through the iron gate Monday morning last. Mr Julian was born in April 1800; and was therefore eighty-six years old. He was well known in this county and also in Iredell, where he lived many years. He resided in this vicinity the last forty years of his life. He was a farmer and retained considerable strength up to the time of his last illness; and having been accustomed to active out-door labors all his life, was frequently seen in town, mixing with people, and taking active interest in the subjects engaging popular concern. Respected by all who knew him, reverenced by his children and grandchildren, the memory of John Julian will linger for many years in honor of him whose life was one continued scene of duties well-performed." Does anyone know the parents, wife, and children of this John Julian? Betty

Abraham decided to stay put and two other brothers headed West. Somewhere in Kansas, one of the brothers decided to turn back and ended up settling in St. Joseph, Missouri (I think) while the third brother proceeded to California. My father is John Paul Keller, his father is Donald Keller, but I don't recall Donald's father, who would have been Abraham's son. 3. I have an Andrew HOWARD listed as a son of Alpheus HOWARD and Hannah KINCAID. I have no DOB or marital status on him but show a brother, Thomas. Alpheus HOWARD was born abt 1810 in Rowan Co (no date of death) and was the son of Benjamin HOWARD and Elizabeth WOOD. Benjamin was the son of John HOWARD and wife Lavinia. I cannot vouch for the accuracy of this data but I have Hannah KINCAID listed as the daughter of Andrew KINCAID and Mary HOWARD. Andrew KINCAID was a son of James Kincaid Sr, my ggg-grandfather. Each volune carries its own index. These are the court order/minute book records for Augusta County Virginia when Augusta county included a great part of western Virginia and current West Virgina. Titled the Scotch Irish in Virignia it includes many English Colonial families as well as the German element. The English for many years kept the Scotch Irish and Germans west of the English settlements as a buffer from the Indians. As plantations became overworked and "sons" of plantation owners sought new "land" -- they settled in this "buffer land" and then went further west. As with many colonies huge grants were given to English men of wealth in Augusta county. Virginia. http://www.rootsweb.com/~chalkley/index.htm Ruth Keys Clark, Virginia ===== Ruth Keys Clark, Kansas

I found the names Pace, Wilson, Read, Reed, etc. and I wasn't even on the site that long. Wonderful browsing. It seems to be a lot of court records, deeds, etc. It is so packed with names on each page that you will have to use your browser's edit-find function to find your surnames. Betty Pace
