Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/0VB.2ACI/6969.1.1 Message Board Post: Dear Larry, Sept. 22, 2002 Received your message, but don't think I am familiar with the Martha you referred to. Some of my family did come west by way of Indiana, but don't know any of those names. The one I am looking for, Michael Swaim, was from Rowan Co.N.C. and his son Herod Blake Swaim was my gr grandfather. Michael's first wife Anna Rosina Lanius died in 1817. He remarried sometime soon after as Blake was born in 1822, but I do not have any record of his mother's name, her parents, where she was from or anything. I am trying to find out some information about her to complete my family tree. I had heard her name was Mary Lane, but can't find any documentation. Also I had been told her name was Miriam Herod, but there again no documentation. I haven't even been able to find either name so don't know where Michael went after Anna's death. I don't have any record where he died either, but do know Blake came to Iowa and is buried near my childhood home Thanks for the reply and if I come across those names I will write you . Good luck as it is very frustrating to look for months and no results. Alice Swaim Shepard

Then the URL for the IL Death Index is http://www.ilsos.net/departments/archives/idphdeathindex.html Thanks for posting it. I found a death date that I had been looking for and hadn't found. Lynn

    3. There is a link from the Rowan Web Page, but it is broken (I notified M. Stewart). You can write to: Genealogical Society of Rowan P. O. Box 4305 Salisbury, NC 28145-4305 Dues are $15.00 a year. I would just put your enrollment request in a letter and send it along with a check. Normal entrollment/renewal is at the beginning of a calendar year, but when you enroll mid-year, you pay the same amount and they also send you the back issues for that year. I think it is a bargain. I discover little things here and there that I could never uncover on my own. 2. Betty A. Pace
    3. I think this is the situation all over the South. The storehouse in Salisbury had supplies for the soldiers but I understand the poor of Salisbury were in a bad way. My Pace family there were just simple people as Abner was a saddle/harness maker and the only son was away with Lee in Virginia. I have often wondered how they fared during the period of the Civil War--soldiers themselves only received about $11-12 a month (if they got paid at all). I know that Union Gen. Stoneman raided Salisbury in late April 1865 and burned the supplies stored there. It must have destroyed the post-war economy in Salisbury and other parts of NC. 1. Re: [NCRowan] Record for Revelutinary War Veteran
    2. Go to this link to find out how to retreive a record from the NC archives. http//www.ah.dcr.state.nc.us/sections/archives/arch/Mail.htm They will do a search by the name of the person and the county they resided. These records are a copy of the actual roster, which is on a piece of legal sized paper with many names and will list the county or military district. Many times I have found future -in -laws and relatives on these lists with the primary person I was researching. The service is worth the $20.00 price (out of state). You can also do a RECORD REQUEST from the DAR or SAR for the name of your ancestor. The fee is $5.00 and will be a copy of an application to the ancestor. Go to www.SAR.org or www.DAR.org, there are instructions and forms, addresses, etc to request a RECORD copy. The advantage of this, is the listing of the names of all of the generations on the application, some of whom might be related to you. This application will also cite a source or sources for prooving service in the Revolutionary war. Good luck Dwayne Meyer

    3. Finally an answer on JOHN JULIAN (D.1886). It turns out he is the brother of my WILLIAM JULIAN and son of DAVID JULIAN and wife ELIZABETH MERRILL (granddaughter of Capt. Benj. Merrill, hanged as a Regulator in 1771).. Betty Pace --------- Forwarded message ---------- Dear Betty, This is in reply to your note of 9/17 regarding the John Julian who died 4/12/1886. This one I know about. He must have a thousand descendants -- all living in the Salisbury area. John was the 3rd child of our David Julian and Elizabeth Merrill and brother to our William. Born in 1800, he married Abigail SHINN. They could not afford a TV so they had 11 or more children including Betsy, William, Mary E., Matilda, Clementine, Caroline, Benjamin, James T., George Washington, and Isaac Ross Julian. Because so many of these names are in other Julian lines, including ours, and are about the same dates, there has been confusion through the years as to what line they were from. I won't even try and list the married names of the girls or their descendants. <snip> From: "Betty A. Pace" <bapace2@juno.com> To: ROWANROOTS-L@rootsweb.com Date: Tue, 17 Sep 2002 18:05:20 +0000 Subject: [RowanRoots] JOHN JULIAN 1800-1886 Message-ID: <20020917.180522.-135221.17.bapace2@juno.com> The most recent issue of the Rowan Co. Genealogical Society Journal (Vol. 16, #3, 2002) contains the obituary from the Carolina Watchman on April 15, 1886 of a JOHN JULIAN (1800-1886). I am not sure who he is but he must be a part of my Julian family somehow. "Death of JOHN JULIAN - Another old and valued citizen of this county passed through the iron gate Monday morning last. Mr Julian was born in April 1800; and was therefore eighty-six years old. He was well known in this county and also in Iredell, where he lived many years. He resided in this vicinity the last forty years of his life. He was a farmer and retained considerable strength up to the time of his last illness; and having been accustomed to active out-door labors all his life, was frequently seen in town, mixing with people, and taking active interest in the subjects engaging popular concern. Respected by all who knew him, reverenced by his children and grandchildren, the memory of John Julian will linger for many years in honor of him whose life was one continued scene of duties well-performed."

    1. [NCRowan] Allowance for Civil War soldiers' wivesm mothers, and widows
    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. The latest issue of the Journal of the Rowan Gen. Society published a paper from the Carolina Watchman 18 May 1863. This article said that the Rowan Co. commissioners had agreed to pay in money or provisions to soldiers' indigent wives and mothers and widows, these monthly allowances. $2.00 a month for herself $1.00 a month for each child under 10 years of age I wonder how well these families would dine on these sums. The Commissioner appealed to the citizens of Rowan with spare provisions to sell such at a reasonable price and not sell to speculators. I wonder if this is what brought on the riot in Salisbury when the women attacked stores with hatchets because they believed that the shop owners were charging exorbitant prices an withholding food from their families. Does anyone remember the year of the ladies' attack on the markets? I would wager that most NC counties had a similar procedure for helping the indigent, if they could prove they were indigent. Did any of the enlistment records give father, or county they enlisted from? Are there even any records? DA R lists a name and birthday for this same name.. I would like to prove it is the right one, but have nothing else to go on. Thanks for any help.
