You can take a "walking tour" of old Salisbury by going to the below web site. It features many historical landmarks useful to those of us who have ancestors from Salisbury. I have left off the www. below because I wanted you to see the underline between /walk_tour.htm. You can get to the web site by adding the www in front of: ci.salisbury.nc.us/root/walk_tour.htm It will work better for you if you have a color printer. Betty Pace

He was probably from Virginia, since his daughter Frances gave her birthplace as Virginia in the 1850 census. John had daughters Frances (married Micajah Callaway) and Nancy (married James Davis - my ancestor). We know this from their marriage records. Almost certainly he also had a daughter Betsy Mary, who married John Bright. John's will was probated on 20 August, 1810 in Madison County. It is in Will Book A., page 545. He did not mention his daughters in his will. He did list his sons and grandchildren as follows: son Philip grandson HENRY BRIGHT HAWKINS grandson Elijah, son of Weden (another son) grandson Philip grandson George son Elijah I have had a terrible time separating my John out from among the many other John Hawkins in Madison. I have assumed that he was from Spotsylvania County, since so many of the Madison County Hawkinses were. I Another Hawkins researcher believes my John to have had brothers Joseph and Philip. I would like to hear from anyone recognizing any of the names.

It is just a listing of names of men who lived in early Rowan County. The story is that Bean planned to write a book on Rowan County, witch did not materialize. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Betty A. It wasn't what I expected from what the girl anchor had said. I thought it was an all-day running, but they only did it between regular programs on Saturday. Still I watch that channel all day Saturday as I do my chores, and I got to see a lot. Especially interesting was the female clothing, the reenactment soldiers cooking food they would have eaten back then. Unfortunately you had to tune in between programs. Still I enjoyed the segments. The reenactment site was apparently at Bennet Place (?) in Durham, NC. From what little information I have, it takes the position that an Ann Melton was actually the killer and she was a jealous friend.
