Her name was Lula Florence Stewart (Stuart?), daughter of James J. Stewart and Laura Elizabeth McDaniel (daughter of Asbury McDaniel and Martha Ann Gardner). Supposedly, Lula Florence was born in Stokes County, NC, 8/4/1883. I seem to remember at one time hearing the family may have migrated from Pennsylvania, but cannot trace any information backward past Lula Florence’s parents’ names, her date of birth, and her maternal grandparents' names. Siblings of Lula Florence were Joseph Asbury (b. 2/26/1887) and David William Columbus (b. 2/7/1882), but don’t know where family was living at the time of their births either. Know they eventually came to settle in either Rowan or Cabarrus Counties, N.C., where Lula Florence Stewart Cook and her brother, Joseph A. Stewart, were living when I was born, and for the remainder of their lives. Anyone having any information about the James J. Stewart family in N.C. (or possibly PA), would appreciate your sharing with me. M.C. Jost

Is anyone researching the HORAH family of Rowan Co., NC; they used to be a prominent family in Salisbury. I need the will of William F. Horah, but I don't know the date except that it was probably back in the 1800s. I don't know what the connection is between John Pool and William F. Horah--maybe nothing except this piece of land, whatever it is.. In going through the film of the McCubbins papers for JOHN POOL, I found this entry: HEADING; JOHN POOL (NORTH FORK OF CRANE CREEK) "See the will of WILLIAM F. HORAH for part of the following tract which was called the CALIFORNIA LAND, begin N. B. McCanless, Cotton Mill & other land on Gallows Branch &e. It may be traced through the sale, by JOHN WADDEL, back to the grant of HUGH WADDELL." "Book 19. page 439: Jan. 31 1806, Conrad BRAM/BREM/BROM--no wife signs--lets ARCHIBALD HENDERSON (both of Rowan Co NC) have 428 acres on the north fork of Crane Creek on the Salisbury town line next Dr. Anthony Newman, Albert Torrence, old line of ___ WADDELL, Judge Macoy___Horah & ___BEATAMAN, for 1000 pounds, witnessed and proved by Matthew Troy." These two entries are typed on the same piece of paper and below on the same sheet is the division of the estate of my DAVID L. POOL, son of JOHN POOL (d.1832). All of these must be related in some sense. I know from these same McCubbins papers, that Archibald Henderson sold a plot of land to my JOHN POOL in 1820, and I think this is the same piece of property. I have no idea what the "California Land" is. Betty Pace

Philip Logain is listed on the 1782-1783 Rowan County Taxables list, page 192, as being in Capt. Davison's district and owing taxes for the year 1781. Is there any way to find out what part of Rowan County Philip Logan (correct spelling of last name) lived in at that time and what county the property wound up in after Rowan was split? Believe at least part of Capt. Davison's district winds up in Irdell County but don't know if all of it did. Any help will be appreciated. Arnold Logan North Richland Hills, TX

Dear Virginia, This is a marvelous site for all NC counties. Thank you so much. I have copied-pasted the entire directory for Rowan Co. and will be posting it. Again, this is a very valuable site for Rowan Co. (and other NC counties) in the period 1851-52. I notice that the parent site also covers Virginia (Grayson Co. & Southwest VA etc) I think there are also articles on other states but I haven't had time to explore fully. That site can be found at the bottom of the site you gave. Just hit Ctl and End and you will get to the end of the NC pages. Then click the Link that says "Return to New River Notes" My eyes aren't as good as they used to be but I think it is: www.LS.NET/~NEWRIVER/NRV.HTM. (I had trouble with the first letter after the www--looks like an L to me. Are the rest of you getting messages that when you click on them, the Windows media viewer pops up and tells me that it can't open the file, thank heaven. I delete the messages and immediately run my anti-virus program, but nothing is ever detected. Am I alone in this? The messages are from people I have never heard of, and when I reply to them to tell them they might have a virus, my message isn't delivered (delivery failure, it is called). Betty Pace
