Surnames: Biles, Conger Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/0VB.2ACI/1089.3470.3489.1 Message Board Post: Daniel Biles and Jean Conger are my ancestors also. From the wills (1781) of Thomas Biles and Elizabeth Biles in Rowan County, I have been able to trace my lineage from Rowan Co., NC to Clay Co., TN, i.e. Daniel Biles' son John who married Cathy Walton and took up land first in Wilson Co., TN then in Clay Co., TN on Trace Creek. Through which child of Daniel Biles and Jean Conger do you descend? (I have much information on our Congers.) In your posting, you state that our Thomas Biles (a wheelwright), who left a will in Rowan Co., NC (probated 1784) was the son of a John Biles. You did not identify which John Biles. John Biles was a very popular name, and there are many. Who is the mother of our grandsire Thomas Biles (will Rowan Co. 1784)? What is his wife's maiden name? Bryan Biles, who attempted to chronicle grandsire Tommy Biles' ancestors, in his book "The Biles Family, How Green Was Our Valley" suggests that William or Charles Biles, who came to America 4th June 1679 from All Saints Parrish, Dorcester, Dorset County ENG, was his ancestor. Without a Bible record, a legal document, or some written proof, this was still speculation. Many have spent a lifetime searching for the link between our Biles Rowan Co., NC family and the famous ones by that name who made the history books, such as William Biles (a noted Quaker preacher).

She died there in 1850, after the census was taken. Supposedly her father was Jasper Stewart, tho Jasper is not a common given name for that era. 3. I know this message might be questionable on a genealogy mailing list, but here people do have living elderly relatives who might have experienced something called a reverse morttgage. I have a lady in my family who is considering something called a reverse mortage just to make available to herself a little more cash monthly. I have heard some vague but unpleasant things about reverse mortages but I haven't been able to come up with enough information to help her. She lives in Virginia. Does anyone have a parent or grandparents who has taken out one of these reverse mortges, sometimes called a Home Equity Conversiion Mortage on the internet. I would appreciate it if you could communicate with me privately. And I apologize for burdening the rest of you with this question. Betty Pace

    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. Around 1750 PETER SCHMIDT/SCHMITT SR. came to PA from Germany. One of his sons PETER SMITH JR. is named in Peter Sr's will in 1767 in Rowan Co., NC. Peter Smith Jr. (d.around 1779) married Margaret Ford in NC. They had the following children. Peter (III), John, Henry A. and George Alexander Smith. Peter III must have been older because he chose John Steele as his guardian in the estate settlement letter of administration (issued 3 Feb. 1789) in Rowan Co., NC. Female children are not named in this estate paper, though I think there might have been daughters. I know nothing further about Peter Jr's wife MARGARET FORD, except that she was either from PA or NC. I would be interested in contacting researchers from Margaret Ford's line. 3. Does anyone know the parents of John Adams, first husband of Eve Schmidt (dtr of Peter Schmidt Sr. of Rowan Co-d.1767)? Please reply to Sylvia Heiney at: aj4ever@olemac.net ----- Forwarded Message from Smith GenForum posting ----- Subject: EVE SCHMIDT + JOHN ADAMS I have no idea where Northampton Co, PA. is, but I am looking for a woman named Eve Smith who married a John Adms, Sr. I'm not sure where they married, but John Adams was born abt. 1720, and died abt. 1764/69 in Rowan Co., N.C. I believe her parents to be Peter Smith/Schmidt and Barboury. But, I don't know much more about them. I also know that Peter's will states that Eve married a Christopher Knatzer a few years after John's death. Do you have an Eve Smith, or a Maria Eva Schmidin (the German version) on your list? My goal is to find John Adams, Sr.'s parents. Maybe if I find her, I can find out more about her 1st husband. What town in Pa. isNorthampton Co. in? I'm in Missouri, I know little about Pa. Thank you! Mrs. Sylvia Heiney, aj4ever@olemac.net (OCT. 2001 posting)

    3. ----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Betty A. Pace <bapace2@juno.com> To: mycuzins3@aol.com Date: Fri, 6 Dec 2002 07:47:37 +0000 Subject: DREW SMITH -NC>TN Sherrie, I saw your posting on the Smith page of GenForum regarding Drew/Drury Smith of TN. I believe your Drew Smith is the son of John Smith and Polly/Mary? Bryan of Rowan Co., NC. I have seen the name of Drew Smith in some land records when my Margaret Smith (his sister) inherited land from her father's estate (John Smith's estate). My Margaret Smith m. Isaac Earnhardt in Rowan Co., NC 23 Nov. 1822. John Smith (father Peter Schmidt/Smith Jr., grandfather Peter Schmidt Sr.) was born in 1780 and died very young in 1812 in Rowan Co. NC. His wife was Polly/Mary Bryan (31 Oct. 1784-21 Apr. 1843)and they were married 14 April 1804 in Rowan Co., NC.. After John Smith's death, Polly/Mary remarried Jacob Weant (another German name) in 1814 in Rowan Co. NC. The children of John Smith and Polly were: 1) Margaret Smith (1806-1895) m. Isaac Earnhardt--my line 2) Wiley Smith 3) Peter Smith (probably named for John's father Peter Jr.) 4) Elizabeth Smith 5) Drury/Drewery Smith (These are not in birth order probably, since I don't have the dates of birth. The names have always seen odd to me for a German father, but I believe the name Wiley has been associated with the Morgan Bryans of NC. I haven't been able to find Polly/Mary? Bryan's parents because that is such a common name and there are an awful lot of Bryans in NC. I have even wondered if she was a Bryan widow when John Smith married her in 1804. When she married Jacob Weant, she married as Polly Smith, of course.) The children of Jacob Weant and Polly were: 1) Mary Caroline Weant 2) Nancy Catherine Weant 3) Lucy Weant 4) John B. Weant 5) Sarah Ann Weant m. Henry A. Smith Our information on the parents John and Polly Bryan Smith came from a genealogist in the Rowan History Room (M. J. Fowler). John's father (Peter Jr.) died about 1779, when his son John was still very young. John's siblings were Peter (III), Henry A. and George Alexander Smith. Peter III must have been older because he chose John Steele as his guardian in the estate settlement letter of administration (issued 3 Feb. 1789) in Rowan Co., NC. John's mother was Margaret Ford, but I don't know anything about her, except that is the name given in Wilbur B. Smith's research on the German Smiths of Rowan Co., I do know that when my Margaret Smith inherited property from her father, the name Drew Smith is mentioned. I can't remember whether other children were mentioned or not, and right now I can't put my hand on that estate paper because it is a photocopy of records in the McCubbins Files (filmed) in Rowan Co., NC. I had not known that Drew/Drury Smith had gone to TN, but I think it is the same man. I notice that you have different parents for your Drew Smith. Can I ask why you think so? It is very difficult to research Smiths in Rowan Co., NC, but my Schmidt/Smith group go back to the Peter Schmidt Sr. (d.1767) who came over from Germany with Gaspar/Caspar and David Schmidt very early (before 1757). They did live a while in Lancaster Co., PA, where it is possible that Peter Sr. converted to the Dunkerd (Church of the Brethren) as early as the 1740s in Ephrata, PA. Although he was not a Moravian, his name does appear in some Moravian Records in that early period, and his church seems to have been closely identified with that group. Unfortunately, there were two Peter Schmidt Sr., at roughly the same time frame. He may have been an Elder in the Dunkerd/Tunkerd (because they baptised by immersion). I don't think his children embraced that faith, however. I have wondered if John Smith was somehow involved in the War of 1812, since that is the year he died. However, I haven't been able to find anything on that possibility. There may be loose estate papers on him in the Rowan History Room but I haven't made an effort to get them. Let me know what you think.
