I don't know if the search she recommends will turn up all ships to the Carolinas or just slave ships. You will have to try. Would sure like to know if anyone out there can connect to this Ross below. If so, I'd sure love to hear from you.. 30 May 1774 Commisioners of the Customs of Scotland "Report of the Examination of the Emigrants from the counties of Caithness and Sutherland (Scotland) on the board the Ship Bachelor of Leith bound for Wilmington, North Carolina" John Ross, aged 47, a widower hath six children, from 20 to 5 years old, who emigrat with him, by trade a farmer, last at Kabel in the parish of Farr and county of Sutherland, upon the Estate of Sutherland. Goes to Carolina, becasue the rent of his Posession was greatly advanced the price of cattle which must pay that rent reduced more than one half, and bread which they must always buy excessively dear. The Evil is the greater that the Estate being parcelled out to different Factors and Tacksmen, these must opress the subtenants, in order to raise a profit to themselves, particularly on the article of cattle, which they never fail to take at their own prices, lately at 20/_ or 20 merks, and seldom or never higher than 30/ tho' the same cattle have been sold in the Country from 50 to 55 sh. By these means reduced in his circumstances, and encouraged by his friends already in America, he hopes to live more comfortably in that Country. >From Page 147 and 148 of "Ship Passenger Lists The South (1538-1825) " edited by Carl Boyer, 3rd Audrey Orlando, FL

Some of her mail used to get misdelivered to our house, and visa versa, and both families would make a point to make certain the mail got to the right person. I do not know whether any of her family still lives near Gold Hill, but I think the road their house was on is now called "Melchor Road" just south of "town". I think you are right about Ms. Melchor reaching an advanced age, but I do not know details. Thank you for your response. Please pass along any interesting information you learn about Gold Hill residents of the past.

My father was raised by great aunts as he and his brothers were orphans. My father always said that they (McCollums) were no Irish that they came from Scotland and that they came to kentucky from North Carolina.Somewhere along the way he had been taught that by one of the old timers. My aunt gave me a paper with Danniel McCollum, Revolutionary Solider b. 1760, came with his son David born 1779 to Kentucky. Married Rachel Morris 1804 and had 12 children. 4th son George McCollum born 1811, had son Richard b 1856, had son Joseph b 1886 had son Vernon b 1912, Vernon was My father, patricia Hawkins mcCollum b. 1937. Danniel is listed as one of four men living on Island Creek Kentucky about 1796. In Manchester (Co. seat) historical writings. and in 1807 Danniel was made captain of the militia of new formed Clay County Territory of Kentucky. The Kentucky census was started also in 1807 and Tax collected. Danniel, Danniel senior, David , W! illiam, and Issac all land owners listed in 1807 in Clay co. They are listed in every census until they died or moved up to 1850, when two moved to Indiana. Rest of family listed until present day in Clay and Owsley Co., Ky, as Owsley was formed out of Clay territory in 1840. I am constantly reading Clay Co. records for McCollums. One of the problems with the McCollums is naming everyone after a brother or father. I thank you very much for you're information. I'm new at this business, since I retired as a school coordinator. My data has come mostly from family bibles, and Kentucky state records from Clay Co. Historical Society. Also from the Revolutionary War records. I guess you and I might share some DNA somewhere along the line! I think the Danniel that left North Carolina for Kentucky in 1795, might be the one I am looking for. Anyway, Thanks very much.
