He was born 1834 in Rutherford County NC to Jacob Wolfe and Nancy McEntire Thompson Wolfe. He was married to Phoebe Lee daughter of George B Lee and Pricilla Bridges of Rutherford County NC. I have been searching fr the answer to the association of William Cathey Wolfe's name to some family of Cathey's. What was the relationship to the Cathey's? I know there were Cathey's in Rowan County and also have found some in Mecklenburg County NC. My Deadman's, Dedmon's lived in old Rowan County NC in the area of the forks of the Yadkin River. There is a Deadman cemetary in Mocksville NC. This is where my 4xgreatgrandmother Mary Pollly Deadman b approx 1759 in Patapsco MD, daughter of Thomas Deadman and Sarah Griffith, Griffin, who came to NC from Md as their land had been confiscated as they were Tories, who was married to a Jacob Woolf b approx 1760 in Stokes County NC. Mark Dedmon was married to a Hannah Bailey of Rowan county NC, he was a Rev War vet and brother to Mary Polly Deadman above. He came to Rowan County NC with his parents about 1771along with a number of other brothers and sisters. He lived in Rowan County for a short while then moved to Greenville County SC then finally settled in Rutherford County NC where he died in 1839 buried Zion Unk, his wife Hannah Bailey Dedmon buried on their land on Brushy Creek. Anyone with any knowledge of how the Cathey's tie into my family of deadman's, Dedmon's, Wolfe's would be most appreciative. Have much more on my family and this is getting very long. Very willing to share what I have . Thanks, Melanie Malone

The Victorians had a fear of being buried alive because death was not always easy to determine. Thus the Victorians often had graves equipped with a bell above ground, the clapper attached to a string or wire that went into the casket below ground and attached to a finger of the deceased. The idea was that if the deceased happened to awake, he could pull the wire and ring the bell. I think I read that for about a week after burial, someone was stationed at the grave to listen for the bell. Has anyone actually seen one of these bells above ground in an old cementery? Betty Pace

My grgrgrandfather, Joseph Asbury Rhodes was married to Nancy Merrell. Prior to the time the two married, this Rhodes line was in Buncome county, NC. Later they were included in Henderson county when it was formed from Buncombe and Rutherford. Do you think there might be a connection with our families? My 4Xgrgrandfather was supposedly from England and arrived in America 1745/50. I have very little info on him but one of his sons, Daniel Rhodes - my 3X - settled in that section of NC and the family pretty much stayed put. I do know that the Merrell/Merrill line came to Rowan county from New Jersey and were in fact called the "New Jersey Boys" but I've not connected Nancy Merrell with a particular member of that family. Would very much appreciate hearing from you. You can get me at omarolaf@sandtech.net. Happy Hunting!
