As you know I am the one searching into the House and Crowell families. I know that there are a lot of people in Rowan County, I mean African Americans, but for some reason a lot of them are not responding to the geneaology segment. Certainly I can be wrong at this. I am trying to put a plug into the area so that people with names like Crowell, House, Heilig, Miller, Morgan, Ingram, Stoner, Reid and others will respond. Also, I have a cousin named Irene Miller, she is Irene Heilig Miller who lives in Heiligtown, in Salisbury, N.C. You may want to check her out. Thanks. Joseph

Some of the JOB(E) family migrated to NC. ~malinda From: Elangreen@aol.com [mailto:Elangreen@aol.com] Sent: Friday, February 14, 2003 1:54 PM To: PA-OLD-CHESTER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [PaOldC] Nottingham - JOB Since there have been previous discussions re Nottingham and Andrew Job, I thought someone might be interested in the following deposition I found among Boundary Papers at the Maryland State Archives. The following deposition concerns Andrew Job, John Jacob Job, Enoch Job and Abraham Job all living in Nottingham and calling themselves Ponsulvanians. Deposition dated __ March 1719. Robert Hodgson of Cecil Co age 45 yrs being one of the people commonly called Quakers affirm that one Elisha Gatchill of Nottingham last October told him that there was an agreement made between the Govenour of Ponsulvania and the Govenour of Maryland and between the Secretary of the Province that the Nottingham south line should be the division line between the two provinces and that if any persons should survey any land by Maryland right to the northward of ye aforesaid line the said Gatchell would send or take them before the authority of Ponsulvania and Hodgson further affirms Andrew Job and one Henry Worly, a surveyor have surveyed about 100 acres of land by a Ponsulvania right held by said deponents by virtue of Maryland rights and further that said Gatchill told the deponent that he should ___ his land from Maryland for it was far within the rights of Ponsulvania. Sworn before A Bebber, M Vamder_eyder, Ephra. Aug. Herman I don't know if this is the same Robert Hodgson, who with James Hendricks, warranted 3500 acres at Conestoga. Acknowledged before Francis Neely in May 1803. 1801, Nov 1, Rowan Co, NC Book 18, p 422 - Henry Huff, Valentine Huff, and Jacob Roland designate John Sain and Charles Hunter to be their agents in selling the lands of Valentine Huff, land included 360 acres in Rowan Co, NC on Bear Creek and 2 lots in Hamburg, MD. In 1802 and 1803, there were several land sales of the 360 acres and of two lots in the defunct town of Hamburg, MD; and these established most of Valentine's children. These land transactions are recorded in Rowan County records in Deed Book 19, p. 898, and Book 18, pp 675-6. Charles Hunter and John Sain, who had married daughters of Valentine and who lived in Rowan County, sold the land for all the heirs. His NC land was sold to William Moore, for $1,000, except for 1/4 acre, which was in use as a burying ground. It is assumed that was where Valentine Huff, Sr. was buried. 1. Re: [NCRowan] Seeking info on Leah Elizabeth Klutts
    2. You may do a little exploring of this website to find some information about your George Washington Huffman and his migration to Arkansas: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov This is the website of the Bureau of Land Management. Much of the land in what was the Louisiana Purchase, which included Arkansas, was awarded to the first owners by land patent. This website is highly searchable. I put in the name Arkansas and then the name George Huffman, expecting it to not respond if I gave too much information. There are four George Huffmans who patented land in Arkansas, and two of them are George Washington Huffman. You can order the patent (a copy thereof, that is) from the BLM. It may or may not tell you much about your ancestor, but every piece of evidence adds to your family history. Geo Washington Huffman seems to have acquired his land ca 1859. Does that fit your timeline for this man? Why don't you do a www.google.com search for the surname Klutts and use variant spellings? Sounds Germanic to me. Also, search the databases on www.familysearch.org I hope you find your missing ancestress. Many of us have trouble with our ladies, who were the true pioneers, it seems to me. E.W.Wallace (female)

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/0VB.2ACI/7075.2 Message Board Post: I have no known connection with Swicegoods, but I have seen the name often. And I did some searching, "all states" via soundex in 1840, including with soundex for the 'schweissgot" spelling....... No luck with that one, by the way. The Swicegoods all appear in Davidson Co NC. And at least in 1840, the Swicegood spelling seems to have stabilized. There are a number of Swicegood families in the 1840 census. Well, one Swicegood I saw got married in Davies Co, but one of the couple may have got married at the other's home across the border. Davidson County was carved out of Rowan Co in about 1830, if I remember correctly. So anything after that date would have been Davidson, and before that, Rowan Co. I found one marriage bond between McBride and Swicegood. Not the one you're after, but many marriages were performed without going the bond route. This was only one legal mechanism. North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868: Bride: Chynthy Swicegood Groom: Andrew J McBride Bond Date: 21 Aug 1856 County: Davidson Record #: 02 085 Bondsman: James F. Heartl Witness: Andrew Swicegood Bond #: 000038928 At least it shows that families of these names were associated. There may have been several intermarryings that do not show up in marriage bond lists. There are a number of Swicegoods in Davidson Co after 1830, and one head of household in Rowan Co before 1830. The families probably didn't move. The county lines did. In 1830, there is one Swicegood in Davidson Co. And also one Swazegut in Ohio. (Often, part of an early family moved west, and another part south.) Yet another possible early spelling variant. Sigh.... If you would like further info on the NC Swicegoods, let me know. I am searching other families in the Rowan/Davidson area, and have a lot of the census info. Would be glad to transcribe the Swicegood names for you both. Linda Schreiber

    1. Re: [NCRowan] Re: Swicegood: NC to MS?
    2. The trouble with posting to a rootsweb (an open forum) is that lots of folks horn in on the action. That is the case with this writer in your quest for the surname Swicegood: I was intrigued by this surname, and I wondered whether there was anything on the International Genealogical Index for this surname. Yes, there is. But: CAUTION: Lots of this information is incorrect and should ALWAYS be checked with original records, insofar as possible. For instance, sometimes the dates are way off and so are the places. Some of the localities associated with listed persons were not even in existence at the time this person was supposed to be alive. So, use this information cautiously!!!! (And if the father is still producing children at age 90, be a little suspect!!! That is the info posted about one of my ancestors!!! I don't think he lived to be 90!) Go to www.familysearch.org and type in the surname Swicegood. No other info is needed with this unusual surname. You will find lots of info--some of the info taken from censuses, which you should also check against the actual censuses. But you may get some good leads as to the various residences of this extended family. Also, if you suspect this surname was Anglicized from a Germanic name, enter the German version also. Reason: The LDS (Mormon church members) have abstracted many Swiss records, and this name sounds Swiss to this uneducated ear. Have fun in your searches!!! That is what genealogy (usually) is all about, although legal authorities looking for heirs also use genealogy. E.W.Wallace
