Looking for information on Gideon Howard in Rowan Co., NC early. He was 45+ in 1810 Nicholas Co., KY, and probably died shortly after that. I have seen a Gideon who was the son of Matthew Howard (1727-1769) and Catherine. That Gideon is listed as dying "after 1807 probably in Rowan Co., NC". Any clues appreciated. Thanks, Pat Frunzi

I am a descendent of James Kell through his son, Alexander Kell and then through his daughter, Elizabeth Kell, who married Lewis Ralston. I am wondering if you have come across any new information regarding the parents of Capt. James Kell. Do you have any idea whether he was scottish or Irish or a Kehl from Germany as some say? I hope to hear from you and would be happy to share with you everything that I have come across from the Capt. on down if you have an interest. Kelly

Those searching for information about various Swicegood family members may get some ideas for further research from searching the LDS databases on www.familysearch.org On the beginning page is a link to Search for Your Ancestors in Our Vast Data Collections (or words to that effect). Look for the couple in old fashioned clothing to locate the link. Type in Swicegood and then United States (drop down menu). If you type U, Uganda will come up and then you can scroll up to United States. Many of the entries are from Ancestral File (largely undocumented but you may find a cousin); some are from IGI (International Genealogical Index, a more or less documented database); other entries are from 1880 census and others are from SSDI (Social Security Death Index). Would that we all had some unsual surnames and not common ones like Williams, Brown, Rose, Scott, Harris, etc. E.W.Wallace who had LOTS of common surnames

Thank you Jane Wortman Hill Dear Jane: Has anyone told you about the FREE 1880 census which is online at www.familysearch.org A lot of your family members were living in time for that census. Since Wortman is a rather uncommon name, I would search for that surname alone and then enter the state--in the search questions. This 1880 census is useful in that it asks each person enumerated where his/her parents were born. This may lead you to a new locality to search for your family. Be sure to get the details, and also check the neighbors. Frequently, they were relatives--in-laws, cousins, uncles, etc. There are many misspellings in this 1880 census, both by the census-taker and the transcribers, so do not confuse the computer with too many search parameters. Also, play around with other links on that website. There are some research guides for every state in the Union, plus many European countries, plus, increasingly for the Pacific Rim countries, etc. You may discover some new places to research. By the way, marriage records, death records, birth records are cataloged under Vital Records on the Family History Library catalog. The link to the catalog is on the lower right. Click on it and do a surname search, and also a locality search. You may find someone has contributed some material to FHL concerning the Wortman family. Happy hunting. E.W.Wallace
