2. Thanks to all those who responded on Alse. In addition, I found this on line under Irish names Alis, Ailis, Ailís, Ailíse, Ailse (al-ISH, EI-leesh, EL-sa) from Norman-French Aliz, which is a borrowing of German Adalhaid "nobility" Alice, Elsa Audrey

1. [NCRowan] The Name Alse (or some such spelling)
2. To add to the confusion of the spelling of a given name Alse, these messages appeared on the Harris-Hunters rootsweb. In this instance, Alsey seems to be a male name. Perhaps additional research of Rowan Co. records will give the correct name of the person, but don't count on it. County clerks got bored with their jobs also--and perhaps at times were even tipsy, good drinking water being in scarce supply, I've been told. I have a short deed from Kentucky which has three different spellings for the surname Harris!! The CClerk got creative--or undecided!! I'm wondering if it is possible for you to look up a death in 1923 of an R.C. or W.C. Williams? It's a long shot but I know that my grandmother was working in a drygoods store in salisbury in 1920 and that she had to have met this guy, got pregnant and went to VA to have the child by herself. The story passed down was that the father died before my dad was born. This may be a fable. I am now thinking she went to live with a relative, probably her grandmother, aunt or uncle in VA while pregnant and unmarried to escape shame in the small town of Salisbury. Thanks for the info on her grandparents in VA. I can now trace relatives there. email me anytime at d_coller@bellsouth.net

1. Re: [NCRowan] Casper's of Rowan County
2. Since many of the people who settled early Rowan Co. were Moravians (Unitas Fratum, I believe I have spelled it right, the more formal name), I suggest you research Moravian records of North Carolina. (Granville's agents made large land grants to the leader of this group--Jacob Loesch and variant spellings.) You may find your Caspers were of this group. They were originally in Pennsylvania but had other settlements in Maryland also. Adelaide Fries a number of years translated from German many of the records of this religious group, and also there are histories of this group. There are about 11 volumes of her translations of Moravian journals--make great reading of colonial western North Carolina. Some larger libraries have this set of books which make very interesting reading. Also, you might want to browse the Family History Library Catalog at www.familysearch.org The link to the catalog is on the lower right. Do a search first for subject: Moravians Then go back and do a search for Fries, Adelaide - and see what she has compiled. Then, just for fun, go back to the first screen and do a search of your surname in the LDS "vast databases" You might get some hints there. Also, spell Casper with a K. You might do a google.com search for Moravians. At one time I subscribed to a rootsweb site for Moravians, as I suspect one of my female ancestors was of that faith (originally). Just a hint. You may not find the origins of your Caspers but you will know a LOT more about old Rowan Co. E.W.Wallace

1. Re: [NCRowan] nickname question--need opinions
2. I have an ancestress named Ailsie--not a nickname. I have a living acquaintance with that forename--Ailsie. I do not think this is a nickname, but a misspelling of Ailsie. Put it on the back burner for a while. When you get to a good big library, ask for a book on children's names and see what you think. E.W.Wallace
