    1. [NCRowan] (no subject)
    2. Carolyn is seeking ancestors who possibly were alive in 1880. The 1880 census is online (FREE) at <A HREF="www.familysearch.org">www.familysearch.org</A> It is tricky to use. Not only did the census-taker misspell the name, but the transcribers, according to my own experience plus that of some rootsweb companions, also botched up the surnames as well as the forenames. Don't give the computer search engine too much information--it's like me and algebra--it gets confused. You can use this method if the correct spelling doesn't work. Type in the first three letters of the surname and then add a wild card (an asterisk) If that doesn't work, try changing some of the first three letters. I am told for example that P and B are often confused in old handwriting. I was looking for my great-grandmother's stepfather whose surname was Henze (other records give this spelling, including an affidavit). No luck. So I used the wild card bit and found him (and my great-grandmother as a child in his household). The surname was spelled Henzy (I believe) and on the original census for 1880 it was spelled Hensi (or perhaps vice versa). You may have to change any vowels, and maybe even the consonants. And check out the neighbors--they may be cousins, in-laws, outlaws, or some allied family. The 1880 census is important because it is the first census to ask where the parents of each enumerated person was born. This may give you a clue to other localities (states) to search. E.W.Wallace

I believe they may have been born in China Grove, and that Robert married a woman named Mattie Michals/Yoder sometime after 1884, perhaps in NC. She was from Lincoln Co. and first married a William Yoder from Catawba Co. I do not know if he died or if they divorced. Please contact me if you have any information or suggestions. Thank you.

In several weeks, we ought to know with some high degree of certainty whether the ROPER family of Rowan County is related to the Majority USA ROPERs (MUR). I would wager that William RAPER is going to turn out to be a brother, uncle, nephew or cousin of Meredith ROPER.

Salley, Columbia, S. C., states: Mr. I. Ross died in 1826 at his home one mile north of the old fort site and was buried among some 66 soldiers who had served under Captain Marchand at the Post, and under Andrew Jackson in the campaign of 1813-14. It is 300 yards south of the Colonial Dames Marker in a woody section East of the Coosa River surrounded by property of Hardy Simmons John Crommelin. ROSS, ISAAC—Born 1764, Camden County, S.C., died January 27, 1821, Fort Jackson, near Montgomery, and buried there. Grave marked by Peter Forney Chapter, D.A.R. Pensioner.—General D.A.R. Surnames: Roper, Raper Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/0VB.2ACI/5012.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Running across your Post inspired me to review what I knew about Solomon ROPER and Solomon RAPER. I am confident that most of this information is already familiar to you, as well. But perhaps you would still take an interest in a compilation of this information I Posted yesterday to the RootsWeb RAPER Message Board: "RAPER and ROPER -- The Case of Solomon RAPER and Solomon ROPER" (27 Feb 2003 7:04 AM GMT) http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.raper&m=229 In my view, the concurrent appearance of BOTH a SOlomon ROPER (of Burke) and Solomon RAPER (of Guilford) in the 1830 United States Census is the most persuasive evidence that these were actually two different men. And the Solomon B. ROPER Census record in Marshall, MS, in 1840, looks awfully similar to the Solomon ROPER we saw a decade ealier in Burke, NC. We probably need to take an additional look at the records in Marshall, MS. And somebody probably needs to take a look at the specifics of the Solomon ROPER estate Administered on 14 Jun 1850 by Walter R. Webster amd David N. Martin in Lumpkin Co., GA. My guess is that this is probably actually the Solomon ROPER previously found in Burke. I am inclined to believe that Solomon RAPER and Solomon ROPER were two different individuals, but I suspect that they were actually first or second cousins and that the North Carolina RAPERs descended from William RAPER, of Abbot's Creek were probably actually all ROPERs!

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/0VB.2ACI/5012.1.1 Message Board Post: Yes, that was my original question. Was Solomon Raper and Solomon Roper one and the same? No, I am not quite clear as yet. A Solomon Rape married Elizabeth Manlove in Rowan County, N.C. 12 October 1811. Peter Rape and Mary Shofner 25 Sept. 1779 David Raper and Sally Kimball 8 April 1825 A Solomon Roper voted in Burke County in 1835 and then he shows no more on the census. Also, A Jacob Raper shows in Knox County, Tenn. 1810 as one poll. A Jacob Raper is in Haywood County, N.C. in 1820 and A Jacob Raper voted in Macon County, N.C. in 1835(The Valley River Section, present day Cherokee County, N.C. I think he had a mill there. He does not show on census after that, either. I and Anna Lois McHan worked Roper and Tallent for L. David here in Macon County, N.C. There were a lot of loose ends and persons that I didn't know how to fit in. Some were spelled Raper and some were Roper. I, too, feel that they are one big family. Thanks for replying. I will enjoy checking out the sites you have given me.

Surnames: Raper, Roper, Manlove Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/0VB.2ACI/5012.1 Message Board Post: It is unclear to me whether you have found the information you seek elsewhere. RAPER genealogists show a Solomon RAPER (b 24 Oct 1791 - High Point, Guilford, NC, d 18 Jan 1856 - Schuyler, IL) who married an Elizabeth MANLOVE (b 20 Aug 1794, d 9 Apr 1826) on 12 Oct 1811. Their eldest son is said to be Manlove Rufus RAPER (b 11 Aug 1812, d 10 Apr 1899). It is my understanding that this RAPER family moved to Illinois about 1844. But bear in mind that there was also a large ROPER family centered in Burke County at the time period you indicate and the name Solomon also appeared in the ROPER family. I mention this NOT to question the identity or correctness of the RAPER family's genealogical information about Solomon RAPER, but rather to indicate uncertainty as to whether the particular Burke County records you cite referred to Solomon RAPER or another contemporaneous Solomon ROPER. To this I will also add that I personally believe that ther exists some possibility that ALL of the RAPERs of this particular line might actually be members of the ROPER family who embraced an alternative spelling of the family name. But mine is NOT a mainstream view and is rather vigorously disputed by some RAPER genealogists. Spirited discussion threads onthis topic may be found on RAPER Message Boards. Take a look at these other resources for additional information about the family of Solomon RAPER: http://regan.org/genealogy/families/raper/i0004674.htm http://genealogy.binhost.com/jensen/raper/solomon.html http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilschuyl/BiosCassSchuyler/wmanlove.html For infomration about the RAPER Family generally, please see Betty Merle's excellent RAPER Family web site at: http://raperancestors.com/ * For information on the ROPERs of Burke County, NC, see the ROPER Family History website of Dr. L.
