    1. Re: [NCROWAN] Rowan Slater a husban of a Confederate spy
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: dppoteat Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.northcarolina.counties.rowan/12334.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The book I'm reading is a new book called "The Assassin's Accomplice: Mary Surratt and the Plot to Kill Abraham Lincoln" by Kate Clifford Larson. Sarah Slater has been mentioned in there several times. I just finished reading a book called "Booth: A Novel" by David M. Robertson and that's where I first learned of Sarah Slater. This is a historical fiction book about John Surratt, but I think it's more fiction than historical. Do you have any idea where Rowan Slater is buried? My source states that Rowan left Salisbury in 1858 and becames a traveling instructor in stringed instruments and ball room dancing. By 1860 Rowan was living in New Bern and it was there her met Sarah Gilbert. Rowan ran a very sucessful "Dancing and Walting Academy" that was operated on a seasonal basis. I assume at other times he may had been in other towns running his dance academy. After the fall of New Bern in March 1862, the Academy closed I would love to know the source you are reading on Sarah Slater. Most of my information comes from a long article in North and South Magazine August 2000 issue. Jane Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: dppoteat Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.northcarolina.counties.rowan/12334.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I find this subject very fascinating since I have been reading about Sarah Slater for the past several days. She was a Confederate spy and an accomplice of John Wilkes Booth, but wasn't directly involved in Lincoln's assasination. I had no idea that her husband, Rowan Slater, lived here in Rowan County. I just did a little research and found that in the 1850 census, Rowan was 15 years old and was living with his sister Mary Elizabeth Slater Overman and her husband William Overman. Rowan was employed as a clerk at that time. He was a sub-agent for the Confederate Government in Wayne County in 1863. He joined Co. A, 20th NC on 7/23/1864 and was captured 4/6/1865 in Farmville, VA. Released 4/24/1865. His Confederate service records show he was 5'2", florid complexion, dark hair, grey eyes. In the 1880 census he was living in Albemarle Co., VA and working as a dance master. He was single and 45 years old. That's all I can find in this quick search. If I find more, I'll let you know. Rowan was married to Sarah "Nettie" Gilber in Wayne County in 1861. The war years seperated them never to see one another again. Sarah became a myaterious Confederate spy and very elusive. She has been considered by some historians as the missing link in the Abraham Lincoln Assassination Conspiricy Trial. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Her last marriage was to William Reid. She was a Huntley born in or about 1870 in Gold Hill, N.C.; she married first of all Giles Miller and she had three daughters: Fannie, Annie, and Alice. Her second marriage was to William Barrier, and she had a son Willis Barrier. My part into this is that two persons in that family are related through marriage. Fred House married Fannie Miller in 1909 and had a son Edward House; Willis Barrier is related through his being the father of my cousin Loraine House Strawder. Are their any others who may be a part of Martha Reid's family? I am building my family tree. Joseph Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Woods; 5 Dec 1838; bondsman Oliver C. Woods; witness John Giles. I note that John Giles is on 1790 census, witnessed many marriages, and his obit on NCgenweb for Rowan Co says he is an atty (Esq) and died 1846. I am interested in the Oliver C. WOODS who was bondsman. What was his relationship? I am researching an Oliver C. WOODS b abt 1811-1813 NC who was in Attala Co MS by 1843. I find 1860 Rowan Co NC census hh# 1154/1144 Deep Well has Richard Davis age 46 and wife Elizabeth D. age 49, via Heritage Quest but have not checked 1850 yet since I do not have access to images at home. I note their immediate neighbor is J.B. WOODS age 36 b NC & family, and in the vicinity (#1163/1151) is R.L. WOODS age 37 & family. I'd appreciate ANY information on these people----I am desperate to rule in or rule out who this Oliver C. WOODS is and if he is my Mississippi man. Thanks. 1. [NCROWAN] Moulder-Moler DNA project
    2. Fredric Z. Saunders
    3. The first results are in, and John MOULDER/MOLER (born ca. 1738) and Valentine MOLER (b. ca. 1741) are a genetic match. They also match with Jacob MOHLER, son of Henry MOHLER who died in 1797 in Frederick Co., MD. As Henry named sons Jacob, John and Valentine in his will, the DNA matches would support that this Henry is the father of John and Valentine of NC. The only descendant of John that has tested is through his son Jacob. We would still like to have tests from descendants of his sons Henry, John and Valentine. If interested, please contact me for details. Further details are at: http://home.netcom.com/~fzsaund/moulder.html The DNA markers may be seen at: http://home.netcom.com/~fzsaund/mohlerdna.html Rick Saunders
