    3. Many people will be observing Black History Month 2000 in FEBRUARY 2000. Black or African-American History Month was started in WASHINGTON, DC, as NEGRO HISTORY WEEK by Dr. CARTER G. WOODSON. The African-American Studies Research Center at University of Virginia (Charlottesville) is named for Dr. Woodson. My Mother, Edna June Nichols Douglas (born, Leavenworth, KS), remembers Dr. Woodson visiting her (Black) public school in Washington, DC, when she was a girl. This was probably in the late 1930s or early '40s. How cool. Thanks to information shared by genealogy researcher, Damita Drayton Green, below is a link for the Association for the Study of African-American Life & History (ASALH) regarding Black History Month 2000.
