    3. hi everyone - i hope that each of you had a wonderful christmas and that you have a safe and happy new year. i had a great genealogy christmas present - on christmas eve i received photocopies of some records of my father's family in new hanover county, n.c. this is particularly nice since they were among those people we all could swear were aliens, etc. on the information from the 1880 federal census for new hanover co, it give the person's name, then lists several "codes", most of which (white, male, the age, the person's profession) are understandable. however, after giving what the person does for a living, there are three codes, obviously state or country codes, i.e. "NC", "SC", "Scot". my question is this: what do these three state/country codes stand for? i could guess at maybe 'place of birth' or 'place of residence', but what about the third one? can someone on the list tell me what these three state codes (only a few are for a country) denote? thanks in advance. julie thames howell, jax, fla researching surnames: THAMES and DUDLEY
