Linda, I'm sure there's probably a lot more knowledgeable people out there than I am. However, it sounds to me as if you may be referring to the northwest area of NC, the Swain County area (Smokey Mtns, just right outside of s.e. TN.) I know there was a BECK family who lived there even earlier than 1818. There is a reservation there to this day.
