I cannot speak for North Carolina road maps, but I have a hunch the Department of Transportation would sell you a county map or two. For instance, I do know that the Virginia Department of Transportation sells maps for individual counties, and, for some counties, seemingly as many as five maps per county. I was advised by one the Librarians at the VSL to consult these for creeks, rivers, etc. These are not cluttered up the way with detail as AAA maps are. Another good source for uncluttered state maps probably is in your public library, but it cannot be easily photocopied because of the size of the book (atlas.) It is called Rand McNally Commercial Atlas and Marketing Guide (huge by book standards). In the back is a state-by-state guide where one can find listed even tiny places, along with population figures. Helpful in finding rural areas. Many public libraries of any size have a copy of this atlas. It comes out annually. If your library has one, ask when they are goung to replace it, and may you put in a bid for the old one (if you have room). I use my old copy about once a week or so. I bought it at a Friends of the Library sale. Just something else to add to the genealogical clutter in your house! E.W.Wallace in southern California
