My surnames are : Johnson, Maddill(or with W), Barnes, Avery, Weeks, Godwin, Moore. The surnames this story has to do with is the Barnes, who was suppose to be my kin. It came from one of the best history teachers that ever was in the start of N.C.. I don`t really have first names, my memiorly ain`t that good, But you`ll see if you`ll have ever heard a story sounding anything like this in your family histories and we may be kin. During 1860`s there was a ? Barnes in Johnston or Harnett county that either was to old to go to war or had the money to stay out of it.( May have had childern in war don`t no,). He must have had a good bit of money or gold, from what he did in late 1864 and early 1865, before Sherman`s Yankee army come in. When they did come they new were to go, somebody in the surrounding country had told about ? Barnes`s rich`s. Anyhow the Yank`s came. They done bad things to ? barnes, but he wouldn`t tell them anything. They got tried of messing with him after awhile so they left but they left ? Barnes hangind in his well by his neck. Someone after a day or two came by the Barnes place, they didn`t see ? barnes anywhere. They went to get some water out of the well, and they found ? Barnes hanging there. He was near dead but he lived on a few years. But the Yank`s didn`t get his money. The name he was called after that is one of the most important parts of the story and my mind is blank, it had something to do with the way he walked I think. But anyhow if some else know of this story you maybe kin. Thank You, James L. Johnson Jr.
