Dear Connie, I checked Craven county Marriages to 1800 but did not find a marriage for any George Browning. Since the marriage laws at that time required the bond be posted in the county the bride resided in, you might want to search some of the surrounding counties to see if she was living there. Another possibility is that they posted banns in the church in which case there would most likely not be a civil record. .. Banns eliminated the need to travel to the county courthouse and the expense of posting a bond. The fee for posting banns at this time was only 1 shilling and six pence compared to 20 shillings paid to the Governor and five shillings to the clerk of court for taking the bond. Even though the 1741 law directed the Clerk of ourt to take a marriage bond, it did not specify that the bonds be either filed or registered by the clerk and the law further made no provision for the preservation of marriage bonds. It has been estimated that approximately 2/3 of all NC marriages have been lost. Know this is more info than you care to have but thought if you were new to NC research it might help you in the future. Cindy in NC > My ancestor, George Browning, was born in Craven Co.
